No freaking way...

They claim to not get enough media attention? What the hell? This is the BIGGEST FREAKING GAMING EVENT of the year. Every gamer ever awaits E3, every year. I have seen numerous television stations every year cover E3. That is the only time of the year I ever watch G4. (well, except for Cinematech.) I don't buy it.

Besides, Gamespot says otherwise:

They're saying that it's just supposed to be downsized, rather than cancelled completely. I find that easier to believe than an outright cancellation.

No, it's not going anywhere, it's just being downsized. This has been confirmed by the ESA today.

To better address the needs of today's global computer and video game industry, the 2007 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3Expo) is evolving into a more intimate event focused on targeted, personalized meetings and activities, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced today.

"The world of interactive entertainment has changed since E3Expo was created 12 years ago. At that time we were focused on establishing the industry and securing orders for the holiday season," said Douglas Lowenstein, President of the ESA, the trade association representing U.S. computer and video game publishers and the owner of E3Expo. "Over the years, it has become clear that we need a more intimate program, including higher quality, more personal dialogue with the worldwide media, developers, retailers and other key industry audiences."

The new E3Expo will take shape over the next several months. As currently envisioned, it will still take place in Los Angeles, described by ESA as a "great and supportive partner helping to build E3." It will focus on press events and small meetings with media, retail, development, and other key sectors. While there will be opportunities for game demonstrations, E3Expo 2007 will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years.

"E3Expo remains an important event for the industry and we want to keep that sense of excitement and interest, ensuring that the human and financial resources crucial to its success can be deployed productively to create an exciting new format to meet the needs of the industry. The new event ensures that there will be an effective and more efficient way for companies to get information to media, consumers, and others," said Lowenstein.

Additionally, the evolution of the video game industry into a vibrant and expanding global market has led to the creation of major events in different regions, such as the Games Convention in Leipzig, the Tokyo Game Show, and company-specific events held by Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, and others around the world. As a result, Lowenstein said, "It is no longer necessary or efficient to have a single industry 'mega-show.' By refocusing on a highly-targeted event, we think we can do a better job serving our members and the industry as a whole, and our members are energized about creating this new E3."

Additional details about the new E3Expo event will be forthcoming in the next few months.

I'm a bit disappointed by the downsizing, but it could possibly be for the better IMO. If this means that gaming news will be more spread out throughout the year (instead of the huge surge that occured whth the past E3's), then I'm all for it, since I (personally) had a hard time keeping up with all the news and whatnot.

Besides, there's still the Tokyo Game Show and all of the other smaller conventions.

All this means is that they will no longer put Sony in my Nintendo and Microsoft news =)

Whatever. It needs to change. E3 has become a joke in recent years. It's more a carnival/strip joint than a trade show, I can understand some developers getting fed up with it.

I think this year I stopped caring about E3 altogether, an interesting concept, just one that needed to be thought out a little more before it was executed.

Um.

For one of the three major console makers...

E3 was nothing short of a GODSEND.

Only one of the three?

Besides E3 gave us a YouTube'd filming of Sonic workin' it in front of the Microsoft section.

I'm gonna paraphrase something I said at Kotaku...

Who f**king cares? None of us ever had much of a chance to go there, and none fo us ever will. It was just a way for media to get the scoop on some gamign news, which they'll be able to do anyways.
So why you cryin?

Is it really a good thing that E3 has been canceled?

I can assure you that all the streaming video in the world is no comparison to physically being there, beaten senseless by gigantic video screens, thundering speakers, vast crowds, eight-hour queues and several metric tons of jiggling tits.

The sad thing is, 2 years in a row I could've gone.

I live close to LA, and my friend was connected. But the first year, I was only 17 and couldn't go, and the time when I was 18 they made the application stuff harder so we all couldn't get in.

Looks like I'll never have my chance now. =(

What is the word in that wall Cycle? I can barely make it out.

Well it's the Namco Bandai booth. The wall is covered in this sort of shiny holographic wallpaper, with what appears to be a sewer grate in the middle near the bottom. The wall is not really the point of the photo, however.

Sure can't be the women. They be a common occurence.

No, I'll have to go with dude with the camcorder. Looks like he's getting photographic evidence of that wall over yonder to take back to the lab for an analysis of its SECRET MESSAGE that surely can't be no less than the answer to the greatest riddle mankind has even known.
