so i've been replaying it for the last week or so, and i'm at the part where i'm trying to talk to toma the adventurer to get to the rainbow shell. gamefaqs says he's in choras cafe, but he's not there. where is he?
Did you talk with the king first? The one in the same time period as Toma?

The Rainbow Shell sidequest can be started at anytime during "The Fated Hour" segment of the game. You'll find Toma in Choras Inn, 600 AD. I don't know if its necessary to have met him before in Sandorino Village earlier in the game.

it could be, i've looked all over choras and haven't found him. and i'm also in "the fated hour". i'll give it another shot though.
Since he makes remarks about seeing you before when you talk to him in Choras, it may mean that seeing him in Sandorino is indeed a prerequisite for the sidequest.
If you haven't been wandering into domestic dwellings at random and butting into NPC conversations like you SHOULD be doing, best get started.
Toma appears first in Truce's Inn during The Queen Returns as you speak to one of the patrons. After The Hero Appears you can find him at the Mayor's (Elder's?) House and Pub/Inn in Sandorino, and again at Porre's Inn (seeing a pattern?). After that would be Choras when you get to that point.
I don't think it's necessary to buy him a drink each time he asks, but then again it's only 1GP so why the hell not?
okay, i still just can't find him. i've looked all over 600 A.D. and talked with everyone. i'll keep looking though.
