Chain of Memories coming to the West.

Square-Enix revealed that they would bring over Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for PS2 this holiday 08'.

KH:COM is the PS2 3D remake and update of the game that originally came out on the GBA. Released in Japan earlier this year bundled with Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix+, KH: COM is finally coming out in the U.S. with a $29.99 price tag.

Too bad though, that we are not seeing a U.S. release of Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix+.

Source: Square-Enix @ GS Managers Conference

Well is not Final Mix+ but at least is something.

Screw that. $30 for an unfun mini-game which only offers itself as a prequel to the main one. I'd have considered it if I got to do the Organisation XIII Colleseum battles in the main game, because those seem to be made out of epic amounts of win (and non-stupid card systems).

Still, I'm sure some people I know will be jumping for joy with this news.

I'm with LegionFan on this one...now i've never played KH, but i've got friends that qorship Square because of it and i've seen them play it. Amazingly awesome stuff. And by bringing it over here...it just might[stressing might] encourage them to bring other Japan-exclusives to the West. *shrugs*

No need to sound so offended.

I played the original Chain of Memories and found it to be a horrible game system which was only endured for the storyline, which I've already gotten.

The KHFM+ package would have been worth $30/40, because the content in there is actually worth money. The CoM port is not worth $30 it's practically a mini-game and the only possible way to justify the cost of it would be to give it English voice acting, which would automatically make the Japanese gamers want another port of it (KH1/2 both got Japanese re-releases once the English: IE: Actual Disney Voices, were added) which would create some kind of KH2+CoM+FM2(with one more bonus cutscene for KH3... maybe) thing.

Not saying that the release of this game is a bad thing, indeed I'm happy that people get to play it.

But my experience, CoM was a pile of crap and I was willing to pay full retail price for KH2FM with the extra super battles. Call it bitterness on my behalf.

Chain of Memories was actually my first experience with Kingdom Hearts. Hated it.

Good thing I didn't let that stop me from trying Kingdom Hearts itself when I bought a PS2; I actually quite like that one.

Just an FYI, the game is NOT confirmed... just some tipster from the GameStop conference who supposedly claims to have seen it there. There has been no official announcement yet.

I'm sticking with Craig on this one. I didn't find it as unfun as him (just lacking, GBA game be damned), but I am not shelling out 30 bucks for what is essentially a 3D remake of a GBA game I already own. I rather deal out the cash on the KH2 Final Mix considering it has new contents, and even then, I'm reluctant because of my current displeasure with Square-Enix (and my frugal unwillingness to spend another 50 bucks on the same game with some extras).

It'd be a different story if the rumor proved to be false... and S-E announced a PS2 KH collection of both Final Mixes and Re:CoM instead. I would be much more willing to reconsider a purchase. Well, maybe.

I'm glad they're bringing Chain of Memories to the PS2. Maybe then I can actually play it. But from what I've heard the system isn't bad. Is it the fact that its a card battle system? Do you not like Metal Gear Acid, either?

It's a live action card thing where you have to stand on the spot and reshuffle your deck while the enemy is attacking you and work out the values of your three-card moves, making sure you formulate a deck which has three of those cards in a row so you can pull off Ragnarok once you have access to it, but if you need healing you can also shuffle your deck to have the healing card come up.

It takes insane amounts of time, energy and effort to master the game and by the time you do, you really really resent it.

Plus, in order to defeat bosses you need to spend a lot of time going through the dungeons which ARE IDENTICAL EVERY STAGE. By the 8th stage you're so damned bored of the rooms and their ever so slight variations that the game becomes a total chore. Battles which involve Big Bodies are tedius at best, boss battles have an absurd difficulty curve in which beating Vexen or Copy Riku would require near Godlike amounts of skill and luck. Even after learning the card system by heart, you still have to manage to work around "Attack, jump, shuffle deck, switch card up/down, store card" buttons.

I imagine adding a 3rd dimension would make the game slightly more tolerable, but the fact of the matter is it's a BAD game system. Outright atrocious.

You know, at first I hated the card system. But then I learned to configure one deck to spam the Tornado sleight as my first move and wipe the floor with most random Heartless battles on the later floors. Bosses require you to 'zero card cancel' most of their good sleights to make them easier to handle before you can mount a good offense. Copy Riku, especially, can be brought down with a couple of 0 attack cards in your deck to keep him from spamming his strongest moves. But shuffling cards in the middle of battle is a pain in the ass, I'd admit. And stocking cards is a double-edged sword: you can form a 'hand' of high-numbered cards that can beat just about anything but a zero card, but you permanently lose the first card you stocked for the remainder of the battle. Stock too much, and you'll be left without any means of attack. NESS, IT HURTS...

Birth by Sleep is said to employ a system that's been compared to CoM's card system. Not sure if want.

I know how the system plays, Craig. I just wondering if you don't like card battle systems.
Besides, do you not like a good challenge? Do you not like the system because its hard? If the system's hard, I welcome it. I love a complicated system. And of course the areas are going to look the similar. Its a Gameboy Cartridge! They're video game designers, not miracle workers.
There's always going to be some thing that one person likes and the other doesn't, I understand that. But I didn't want a complete 'hate' vibe. If I did, I'd go and watch Zero Punctuation. And there, it would be funny.

I'm not trying to be hateful(even thought I seemed to type it that way). I understand you don't like the entire game. I understand you don't like the completely similar looking levels. I understand you don't like how the system is set up. Though that doesn't mean I, or anyone else for that matter, isn't going to like it. There are plenty of people who like Shaq Fu. I don't. Why? Because I think that the fact that I'm playing a fighting game based on Shaq getting sucked into another world is, well, kinda stupid.

I just wanted to know if you don't like card battle systems. And you didn't even answer my question about Metal Gear Acid.

Reason I didn't answer your Metal Gear Acid question is because I don't own or want a PSP and thusly have no idea how the game handles. My assumption was that the system was totally and utterly different.

Also, regarding difficulty, I love hard games. BUT. I hate hard games which are hard regardless of my ability. Partially broken game systems which test a gamer's patience to the extreme are not fun for me, and CoM's system tested my patience. Patience which lets me complete Fire Emblem games and call it one of the best games in my life.

I gather Acid and CoM must have similar systems and if that's what you enjoy, cool. I have enjoyed card based systems in the past, but CoM's is less "select the right card for the right situation" and more "holy effing crap, I can't recharge my deck stack while he is punching me in the face. HE JUST ZERO CARDED MY HEAL!" it's too quick and frantic to concentrate on what you're doing, so... maybe stratergy without having time to think about it is my weakness and it annoys me.

Either way, I did complete the game. Just hated it throughout.

I love other peoples opinions. They give you the other side of what you like. I thank you for your answer. It really gave me some insight on to what the game will be like if I ever play it.
But, Metal Gear Acid plays differently. It turned based and your able to move around using your cards. Its really hard for me to explain. If you ever get the chance, you should look stuff up about it.

...yeah, your argument falls flat on its face when you consider that you're trying to liken Chain of Memories to Metal Gear Acid just because they're both card games, while it's not the card game aspect that drives Craig away, but the fact it's a poorly-implemented real-time card game (while MGA is turn-based). It's like comparing Zelda to Final Fantasy (pre-ATB) - you really can't, since they play completely differently, despite having the same concept of heroic warriors taking a sword to a monster's face. Only in this case, the "Zelda" of the pair was implemented absolutely horribly.

All I asked was if he didn't like CARD SYSTEMS. It has nothing to do with how its played. Its the fact that its a CARD SYSTEM. If you don't like CARD SYSTEMS, you're not going to like either now are you?

But his hating CoM has EVERYTHING to do with how it's played and LITTLE to do with it being a card system, so your question is completely misplaced.

If you don't like card systems, then no matter how its played you aren't going to like it. I'm not asking if he doesn't like how its played. He already went over that. I asked if he didn't like card systems.

You know, I just don't understand it. They have to hire VAs for all the characters in Re:CoM, including a few that make a return in KHII:FM and even have new scenes made for them. They could be killing two birds with one stone w/ this deal! It boggles the mind.

Is Birth by Sleep supposed to be KH3? I've pretty much mastered KH2(Lvl.99 and beat Sephiroth(awesome fight!)) and I hope they come out with the next one soon. I haven't seen much about it. My sister-in-law said she saw a teaser for it, but other than that I have nothing to go by. All I know is that there is an empty field full of keyblades and three people with sweet armor(which may or may not be, Sora, Kairi, and Riku). I was trying to beat KH2 on hard to see the extra video, but made it to the final part of the final fight and got stomped. Then I started playing other stuff and forgot about it. Too bad, so sad.

Whoah, where'd you read this? There's been no announcement concerning Coded's jump to PSP. Sounds more like wishful thinking.

Is Birth by Sleep supposed to be KH3?

It's a prequel. However, of the three spinoffs being developed this is the one that's getting all the attention a normal console release would get.

You mean this? And after you watch that, you might want to see the extended version.

Yeah, as far as I know, Coded is still for cell phones (will it even reach the US?).

Birth By Sleep is a prequel as Psx said. It is getting the most attention of the three games.

As for Re: Chain of Memories being released, I think it's a darn shame it isn't being released with KH2: FM. If they were both being released together, I'd probably get it. KH2: FM had more to add to the game, and it would be a lot more fun and interesting than Re: CoM. I thought that CoM was okay, although the more you play it, the more likely it is to get on your nerves. I much preferred KH and KH2 on the PS2. Those were much more fun. I honestly can't see myself going out of my way for this. I've already seen all the cutscenes online, and they're still online, so I don't have to deal with the annoying gameplay that CoM offered just to see those. Not to mention they'd have to make this a heck of a lot cheaper to make me even want to buy this game all by itself. I didn't think the original was fun enough to go buy it in 3D.

That video was probably the one she was talking about. But it brings a lot of questions to mind. The biggest on is, If that one who got frozen was supposed to Roxas, then why is he there in the first place? If it wasn't him then I couldn't tell, the screen was to dark for me to see hardly anything.

But that one guy looks like a samurai. And the new bad guy reminds me of Dr.Wily.

Legion, you need to read that entry more carefully. That's just a rumor. Nothing has been confirmed yet. Also, I'm aware that Final Mix games have only been released in Japan. I never had any confusion over that. I was just noting it was a shame that Re: CoM wasn't being released with it. That would actually make me want to buy it. Read my posts more carefully next time, and you'll note I never even insinuated that KH2: FM was being released, and only wished they were being released together.

EDIT:

We don't know much about who the frozen guy is supposed to be. All we know is that his name is Ven, he bears a striking resemblance to Roxas, and that he is an apprentice of a keyblade master with two others (Aqua and Terra). That old guy is Master Xehanort.

You Mean Ancestor of sora don't you Peaches BBS is a Prequel...It happens Before KH1...Many People Speculate that their is some connection Between Ven & Sora/Roxas....But its yet to be confirmed (But ill be pissed if their isn't) & that Xehanort is a diffrent one then in Previous games...I Will tell you this though There is a possibillity of that Xehanort & Terra to the Xehanort/Xemans we know From Kh2.....But Yea Its A Prequel...not a Sequel...Coded is a Sequel & 358/2 days is set between 1 & 2 it happens right after COM. Just though id clear up some stuff there.

& sorry for not reading the Coded thing properly...But Hey RE:COM was just a rumor at 1st too.

Oh, I see. Rumours of Coded jumping to PSP were due to a blurb from a web site. We'll have to wait and see on that. However, that Nomura interview was new to me, and a good read. Still being as vague as ever, I see.

How does that make sense? If he's really old in the prequel, how did he become young? In KH2, there was a flashback showing Xehanort as a but an apprentice of Ansem the Wise. He didn't become evil until his experiments got out of hand and screwed everyone over.

Square Enix, you got some 'splaining to do.

The Xehanort we're familiar with was also said to have suffered amnesia before he became obsessed with the mysteries of the heart. Birth By Sleep will seemingly explain how he came to be found by Ansem in Radiant Garden.

I don't suppose you've noticed it by now, but Xehanort's hairstyle in the present... and Terra's in the past...

Damn. They couldn't even bother to redo the animation to fit the new lip-synch (probably because on the disc it's FMV). Well, the dub voices sound okay (as long as you can't see their mouths moving lol). Sora's older voice for his younger model seems completely off, but I guess it's something one has to get used to. KH1 really spoiled it for us, his voice was just so pitch perfect, and now...

Vexen = digimon emperor, btw

when did they say he had amnesia?

Excerpt from Secret Ansem Report 1 (Kingdom Hearts II):

Firstly, I will carry out experiments to seek out the depths of the human heart.
One of my six disciples, Xehanort, has volunteered himself as a test subject.
Since I found him collapsed in the street all those years ago and took him in,
he has become a youth who serves me well.

At that time, he had lost his memories entirely, but afterwards he began to
exhibit a remarkable inquisitive mind. He absorbed my teachings incredibly
quickly, and amassed a deep knowledge.

He is somewhat undeveloped in maturity, but this problem is due to his youth.

If I can seek Xehanort's heart through psychological experiments, I may also be
able to unlock his sealed-off past.

It seems that another of my disciples, Even, also has a strong interest in
Xehanort's memories.

But I wonder whether it is truly good that is in him.
Certainly, Xehanort possesses a rare talent...

It is far too excellent. Even surpassing that of a human.
