I'm wondering how many people have played this game. The original DKC was an ok not spectacular platformer that sold in huge numbers because of its 3D rendered graphics. Rare did a pretty bad job with most of the DK games, but DKC2 stands out for several reasons.

  • The style of the game is greatly superior to that of the others, because they went with a pirate theme and included several unique level styles that I've rarely seen in any other game. Even the stages that use classic settings like castles have a lot of atmosphere.
  • It's a collectathon (this is Rare of course), but the collecting is optional, involves finding secret rooms, and is used to open up a secret world (like star road in SMW, but better). Besides the secret world, there's another completely optional collectathon in hidden DK coins that can be found 1 per level, that influence the ending.
  • Some of the music is surprisingly brilliant and complements the moods of the stages well.
  • Diddy and Dixie take over the game, leaving the slow DK out of it. The difference between the characters is small but does influence your ability to find secret rooms. Diddy has a more useful forward shield barrel hold and has a slightly better air jump (roll off a platform and jump), and Dixie can hover.
  • DKC3 is smilar, and adds a few features, but it really isn't as good. Most of the levels are generic, they bring back a slow character, and most of the new features, despite sounding like good ideas, are prety much pointless (the main currency of the game is only used by a few NPCs, and most of the NPCs just make you run through hoops to unlock levels). If you like DKC2, it's worth trying out, though, and they do manage to toss in some fairly interesting strategic uses for barrels and that sort of thing.

Like the Sonic series, the second is always one of the best in the series. I thought DKC2 was one of the best games I've played for the SNES (Not quite as good as SMW, CT, FF6 or Kirby Super Star). I mean yea the atmosphere and levels were just awesome, who can argue with Treasure Island type of theme? I thought it offered a good challenge, a little tougher than DKC and not as evil as DKC3 could be (Remember the Rocket barrel level anyone??)

I think some of the best levels were the roller coaster ones, especially the haunted one where you were chased by the ghost and the entire Lost World.

Alas, the only way I've been able to enjoy it is on an emulator. That game gave me immense thrills while playing it while stuck in the Amarillo bus station this past summer.

DKC2 was the best. This is commonly agreed-upon opinion, for many of the reasons you stated.

Also I thought I'd point out that the third one really really sucks.

That right there is the main reason I've never gotten around to playing it. I've always hated the Diddy character for some reason, and avoided using him whenever possible in the first game (and DKL for GB). So the idea of a game that kicks out the title character in favor of one I hate never interested me. >_<

I always hear people talk about how great DKC2 is, but I can never get interested enough to bother looking into it. >_>

thats actually my favorite game ever.
i have soooo much memories of playing it back when i was a kid.
i actually enjoyed the third, but i didn't get it when it came out and i bought it about five years ago. it was fun but i just don't have the memories i do of for the second.
i think i might just hook up the snes and play.
I'm such an expert that i can beat in within a few hours.
But man do i love this game.
And i hated that barrel rocket level on the third. so much pain!!!!:">
I remember it took me and my brothes 3 years to beat Kudgels (the third boss)

While I never actually played it, the soundtrack (especially Hot-Head Bop)was killer.

The music that played during Squawk's Shaft was GODLY. I used to replay the level on a completed save back in the day simply to experience it again.

It's always been my favorite of the DKC2 series. Best gameplay designs and most of all, the music is so friggin' good and beautiful that it's amazing it came out of a game about monkeys beating the crap out of lizards.

Never been a fan- better than the first one, but still a dull, derivative, platforming-by-numbers piece that was miles away from the imagination and grace of, say, Yoshi's Island or Klonoa 2.
It's a competent game, but lacks any artistry.

I loved DKC2, out of the 3 it is my favorite. Each world has different styles that you have to figure out in order to get through, it's not always the same point A to point B format straight through, there's things in the way to get to point B that are different all the time. That's what I like about it, that and some of the levels and music were done brilliantly. The final levels where they even have the crystals glowing sometimes adds a nice touch of beauty to this game that showed what the old SNES was capable of.

DCK3 was good, the graphics were just as nice which is what helped, but I do agree didn't like the return to the old fast character/slow character combination that you got stuck with. Other than that the game was pretty good.
