Has this been done before in another game? It all looks far to familiar to me.

I almost thought that this was somehow a new adaptation of Final Fantasy IV, insofar as the airships attacking the mage's city reminded me of the opening scenes with Baron's Red Wings attacking to steal the Water Crystal.  I also almost thought that guy who manifests that...sword(?  maybe a staff) on his shoulders near the end looks a lot like Cloud, although with too much smiling for it to really be Cloud.

And of course, that bit at the end with the mages all wearing those cloaks was a definite callback to the cloaks worn by Organization XIII...and after they throw them off, there we are with our standard character types defined by their weapon choices: the pugilist, the dual gun wielder, the scythe user, etc.  Nonetheless, part of the reason Final Fantasy remains popular is because the people developing it know what the fans like and how to emphasize that.

Still a bit of a bummer to see Bahamut get shot down like that, though.

Well, yeah, but by ALEXANDER - a castle-sized summon!  Looks like Bahamut got taken down by some cheap anti-magic device and a lot of gunfire in this one, and right in the first trailer, too.  Maybe it's to establish what kind of threat this enemy nation is, but Bahamut remains one of my favorite summons from the entire series and it's sad that they couldn't have used one of the other obviously-powerful-but-not-too-powerful summons.

Then again, if the experience of the summoner has anything to do with this, and if for whatever reason it's mostly teenagers or other young people doing the summoning here, that may have something to do with it.  But aren't there any old wizards in this town?

No, they're all in retirement homes.
