He's On Fire!! So you all may remember a game by the name of NBA JAM. Created by no longer game company Acclaim in the early/mid 90s, this game makes NBA Street look like nothing. Better yet...NFL Blitz look like nothing. From my memory this is the first of its kind. Taking a popular sport with rules/iconic players/etc and totally throwing that out of the window. Well i've been waiting like crazy for Midway to re-release the game on the VC, but it seems that won't be happening[licensing issues im sure]. But wait!!! What's this?!

Boom-Shaka-Laka! Oh yes...it is returning. Let's hope this isn't like Sonic '06 though...where they claim to be going back to the original formula, blah blah. Maybe EA can actually get it right. I mean it is EA, right? Anyways...discuss!!

NBA Jam was one of those rare sports games that I enjoyed playing on the Sega Genesis (I got stuck with a copy of the Craptastic Bulls vs Lakers at the NBA Playoffs)

I would be excited, but then you said EA and I was like, oh! ._.

waaa what a waste    do people really buy those sports games? i had 2 free ones when i bought my xbox and i still havent unwraped them.
i dont know why anyone would make a sports videogame, its obviously a weak lost hope in gaming, most gamers are into gaming cause they dont have interest in sports.

"Not a sport, but an incredible simulation!"

It's a new age, hun! Everybody plays video games now, not just sport-shunning geeks! And anyway, since when has playing sports video games required interest in sports? Most sports games, NBA Jam is particular, are just some furious arcade action in a sport-colored shell, rather than an approximation of what it's like to play said sport (WiiSports not withstanding).

Money? 😛

Also, Sports have been in video games for forever...this isn't new, and the industry for them is huge.

Surprisingly, they are a VERY successful portion of the overall gaming market!

If there a weak and lost hope why do we have about 20 years worth of Madden, a decade or so of Hockey and Basketball, and atleast 15 different wrestling games?

still sport videogames are unexciting, the rules never change.
just make one game and that's it. no need for so many versions of the same concept.
and really arent those sport games making people lazy, sports fanatics should be out playing it for real not using a computer.

Wouldn't that be a stupid thing for those who can't to have to endure?

Sorry, Don't support the attitude - if it's working and got an audience, we shouldn't be trying to stop it...JUST because 'WE' Don't enjoy it.

The Government does enough of that...we don't need to start discriminating against games we hate or don't enjoy either!

relax dear, i was just making a disscusion, this is purely my own opinion.
and i didnt say it should be banned, i just dont find reasoning in more then one company competing and making so many of the same idea.

It's called Competition...and it could be said that many games could be ceased just because of this very same thing, don't you think?

Culling things in gaming because they seem unnecessary is a slippery slope - many things can apply to many games in this way!

i do understand the importance of competition, as a consumer its what gets me the top quality stuff.
but does sport videogames really need a lot of attention? i mean how many games of that type do you own? isnt one in each home more then enough?

I own none - thing is, developers want to appeal to consumers who enjoy sports...and none of them are going to sit back and let sales go to another competitor just because 'we dont want to do more than one title for each sport!' - it's unrealistic, and goes against what they strive for, which is maximised profits as easy as possible...

Sport in videogames is big business...and thus, the competition that is contained therein will continue to drive itself forward, no matter what anyone might think. Besides all of that, Some people prefer one set of sport titles from one developer over another...it's just how it is!

Sports video games have been proven to be a lucrative business not just to gamers, but athletes as well (Except Madden because it's the Footballers curse). In fact, when NBA JAM first came onto the scene for the Genesis (And SNES) Acclaim was already diving into a see of competition with other devolves who where making other NBA games with different titles (Bulls vs Lakers & the NBA Playoffs, ugh).

So in short. Yeah sport games are not my thing either, and it maybe linked to obesity (I don't believe that), but so is Checkers.

Yeah! You heard me... Fatties! >>

Hahahah! Nice one gamma. But yea sports games are a fairly big deal. Talk about endorsements galore. Tiger Woods PGA whatever, ESPN Football, etc. Not to menton cover athletes and stuff. They're big money makers. And I realize sports games may seem boring or pointless since you coud actually go play the sport yourself...to a degree. This is where arcade games come into play, NFL Blitz, NBA Street/Jam/Showtime/Hangtime, NHL Hitz, etc. Not to mention soccer, tennis, rugby, etc. Some of these games give people who have never been interested in a particular sport a lesson in its rules and stuff.

I for one enjoy sports games. Don't play them quite as much as I once did, but still I enjoy them nonetheless.

i agree with you on the arcade sports games hypersonic, i did have more interest in boxing for example from playing an arcade boxing game to the point of sitting and watching the rockie movies. but overall sports games arent that captivating. you wont spend as much time playing a sports game as you would an adventure or RPG game.

how much do these sports games cost anyway? they're less then other games right?

Seriously are you asking questions for the sake of asking questions? o0;;

Most Sports games cost the same as other games depending on console and age. To end it (and getting back on talking about NBA JAM), Just like RPG's, Side Scrolling & First Person Shooters there is a marker and a fan base for such games, sports games are no different. You may not like them or buy them, but these companies do not care because for every one who says no, hundreds of fans will be screaming "YES, YES OH GOD YES!"

Now then. My favorite team to play with was always the Houston Rockets, but now that Toronto has a team, I'll get the chance to play the Rockets once again...

umm...... <scratches head> i really was curious about that. they sell stuff however they want over here

i really dont think they should be the same price as other games.
cause let's be frank its not loaded with events planning or has a lot of staff working on it. not to mention it will not garentee the consumer pleanty hours of joyful gameplay.
when you buy an RPG you know you're gonna hog it for weeks, but with a sports game you know you'll only max enjoy it on the first day and that's it.

Nope, you have no idea how wrong you are - in this golden age of DLC and online multiplayer, the potential for Sports games to outlast a mere day is high. {Of course, most of the time a chunky DLC For ONE title is released, the Disc update for next years edition is out already...XD;}
