I was watching the latest gameoverthinker/ moviebob video and he was talking about how blatantly racist RE5 was. Funny seeing how months before he was defending the game AND Capcom before he actually played it. I personally don't see whats so racist about having Sheva dress up in a leopard skin bikini covered in war paint, with a bone necklace. If a white girl was in that get up he'd just as soon say its hot, right? Or sexist. Depends on who is complaining.

I mean if RE5 is racist because of a bikini. Then the upcoming Punch Out is racist....all of the Punch Outs are racist XD. I've got nothing against diversifying the heroes but for some reason I get this feeling that if all of a sudden we did get more of a rainbow selection, with there only being a very small amount of minorities actually WORKING in the video game industry that would just make things worse.

Hah I remember once Yahtzee made a comment during his Left 4 Dead review that the black guy is the only seemingly normal character of the bunch "except that he's black so that messes it up." When I first heard that it rubbed me the wrong way but that only lasted like 10 seconds. But then the Over Thinker guy basically says the same thing. With the core demographic being young Caucasian males, is it possible that game producers would loose sales if they just...had a Hispanic main character instead of a white one? That's probably why Character Creation options exist hehehe.
Theeen he made some comment about Tyler Perry being a bad director and that was it... That's like me watching a Spanish soap opera and being able to tell who is pronunciation their words better.

Maybe I should just post the video c.c http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhopxZqQrmo

RE5: An American male and an African female go hunting negro zombies/creatures and made out to be heroes. Let's gloss over the fact that RE:4 had an American male hunting down spanish...things. Save us...save us white American males from those bloody minorities! Save us!

/sarcasm

As for your comment about there not being enough diversified heroes...I'll get back to you on that a little later.

XD! Save us from those bloody minorities. Although...considering RE4 took place in Spain[correct me if im wrong because i've not played this...so I may be missing something here] wouldn't that make the American the minority? *crazy face* Anywho...yea more diversified characters would be sweet. And about that L4D comment...XD! That's pretty funny. Just saying. As for the demographic...etc. I don't really know. Seems legit, but looking at Gears 2...they had about a complete salad...if you know what I mean. lol Although, when I play games i'm not so sure I notice what the character's race is supposed to be. *shrugs* Never thought about it, I guess.

Lmao, I thought there were half-zombies.
Btw, didn't the Power Rangers tried this like back in 1993 and didn't exactly work out (mind you not on videogames but that's not the point).

Yea...the "black" ranger. He was black. And the "yellow" ranger was asian. Seriously? Are you for real Suki Levy and Haim Saban!? Hahah nah, but one of my friends was joking around about that. I though it was funny. LOL

I never really considered the "black" ranger to be an insult but I did think the yellow ranger was pushing it.

I mean some super heroes/villians who happen to be black have the word black in their name

BLACK LIGHTNING

The lack of diversity's never bothered me... I never cared, I suppose. I pick a video game based more on how interesting an experience I think it'll be.

I've been playing Metroid Prime lately and if Samus were some other race I'd still have bought it. The race thing really doesn't affect the game that much.

I wonder if the idea that the race of the main character affects how it sells and who buys it. I mean I know that's how it works for television and movies. But with video games I think people expect the fantastical and what goes beyond the normal. Resident Evil 5 was trying to be all "real world/present day" So if you look at it that way, the protagonist being a white American makes a lot of sense. Something on the other end of the scale would be like...Afro Samurai or something.

Depends on the genre but for the most part, you won't hear people talking about buying a game based on the race of the character. Actually the more pretty and appealing you make the character, the more likely people will buy. Sex sells.

That explains the popularity of the Metroid Series...

Hence the 'depends on the genre,' bit.

Ahh but alas, look at advent of Zero Suit Samus.

i wonder if people who didn't give a crap about Metroid play it now and any following Metroid games in hopes of seeing more Zero Suit.

I think they could just go to the internet for *cough* that...

but alas, DB, you're helping in derailing your thread.

Mario's Italian and he's like, usually the first person a bunch of people think of when they think of Video Game Main characters... so... since he's a minority maybe that explains why noone cares what race the main character?

Though, on the other hand...

I can't imagine someone going "Oh, this game looks good. Looking forward to playing it." but, if put in the same situation with a minority character on the cover saying "Oh, this game looks go- Wait. That dude's hispanic. I don't want it anymore for some reason."

Hah yeah. But its different like that with movies and stuff I GUESS. With video games since main characters can be anyone or anything it pretty much makes no sense to care too much about things such as race. But hey he's called the Game Overthinker for a reason...he thinks way too much about stuff.

Everyone's a minority.

Honestly, the absence of racial diversity among human characters in video games never even occurred to me. Though, how often is a main character in a game actually 'human'? Nearly every sci-fi game has a cast dominated by aliens(though some might resemble humans); fantasy titles are dominated by intelligent beasts and elves; and most games set in the 'real world' lack memorable characters. With the abundance of non-human characters, there certainly is not lack of diversity.

Except for Mario, Lara Croft, and Snake, I cannot think of any well-known video game characters that can be considered 'human'.

Well all the GTAs, Midnight Clubs, WWII games, Sims[even though...you make your own character on this I know...in the ads...and commercials...it's pretty bland] stuff. But yea, I know what you're saying about alot of the characters not even being human. lol We as gamers do love our mystical creatures and anthropomorphic animals. lol

Well, one major factor in racial diversity in games is the fact that Japan is pretty racially monotone.

Yea but with the advent of more Western companies, we get more diversity and fresh gamepl--oh wait.

We won't get real action until the NAACP raises a fuss.

We at least got that 50 cent game!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhTz3ZMj-us I was expecting the argument to be totally straw man in favor of The Arbiter. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't. The Arbiter holds the true solution!

You forget that ALL of the RE games are made in JAPAN by JAPANESE programmers/designers. You'll notice that NONE of the games are set Japan, not even the first ones...

I won't be satisfied until there is a RE game set in Japan. I think its unfair that they'll do a literal globe trot before hitting their own home XD

Correct me if I am wrong, but the Resident Evil games are based on the idea of a Zombie uprising correct? Cremation is the norm in the far east, thus no corpses to be reanimated to provide a zombie hoard for the player to 'kill'. I know that video games seldom follow any sort of logic, but this could be one reason the Resident Evil series never visited the Land of the Rising Sun.

Zombies never come out of the ground like they do in Thriller in this kind of zombie take over. Its not supernatural but scientific. Basically an epidemic/pandemic. Someone is infected, they turn, and bite someone else so on and so forth. All it takes is a few dozen to maybe a hundred zombies to cause a total uprising. The virus being spread by bites.

Although at this point the probability of another zombie outbreak happening in a developed nation are slim. Surely after Raccoon City all the other countries have like...an anti-Z plan or something. But considering the sheer mass of humans taking up Japan's land mass, there aren't many places to run. So it'd be like catching a cold in a subway car. People who don't get bit will be trampled under the feet of everyone else trying to get away. But that's just what I assume.

You'd be wrong Vulpix. Zombies DO come out of the ground in RE3. The first zombies were NOT already dead; the T-Virus killed them and reanimated their corpses. The outbreak in RE2 and RE3 was DELIBERATE and many were exposed to the virus.

You meant to say Code Veronica, yes?

The outbreak in RE2 and RE3 was DELIBERATE and many were exposed to the virus.

I think you're giving the sewer rats a little too much credit there, bucko. And I'm sure Umbrella wasn't interested in causing a pandemic in their own city. Though they did work quickly to take advantage of the situation by field-testing Mr. X and Nemesis. But if you've got a bit of dialogue or text that says different, I'm all ears.

I'd dig in my RE3 files to ounter Psx, but I'm tired and I just ahve lulz to say.

#1-and I believe I was quoted for this before "Equal opportunity killer right here. Its about time I got to kill some Black people in RE5!" Racist? No. It just needed to happen. I was tired of shooting Gringos and spainards. Dversity in games has flourished in the last 10 eyars, and I'm not one to really worry about things like that. Damn near half to 85% of all Japanese games that coms out...yo their "human" characters don't have a lick of Japanese look to them. They all look blank. Not really caucasian, but definitly not Japanese.

Oh and for that Power Ranger thing

Red Ranger -Native American (Yes look it up. Its sad really XD Sure he's a mutt, but its there and you know damn well they used it)
Black Ranger-African America
Yellow Ranger-Asian American
Blue Ranger-While Male American
Pink Ranger-White Girl American
Green Ranger-COOLEST FUGGIN RANGER OUT THERE!
White Ranger-uhhh yeah he was the new leader, just totally took control from the Native Americans....Definitely NOT GOING THERE.

No, Resident Evil 3. In the past week, I've played the games 7 times. After Carlos gets the vaccine, you go into the park. When you pass through the cemetery to get to the tool shed, zombies will emerge from the ground at three locations. I'm not talking about the zombies that burst out of the ice in CVX. I suggest you play the game once.

Epilogue File hunting?

Now I remember. One of my most hated sections due to that annoying worm.

I'm not talking about the zombies that burst out of the ice in CVX.

Neither was I.

I suggest you play the game once.

And here's where the power of assumption fails you.

Oh wow

Mate, not everyone acts the same as you do. He's probably got better things to think about than some guy on the internet "1-up"ing him. You're just coming across as a bit of a berk. Sorry, but it's true. You just need to relax some and stop trying to prove yourself or whatever you're trying to do. It's also a good idea in this forum to not keep dragging things up (such as your insistance that none of the previous games in the quote thread having US releases), it makes you look obsessed. And more often than not obsessions with tiny things like that aren't good. You need to learn to start letting things go.

[edit]
On topic, I never really notice the ethnicity of the main character. I do, however notice accents. Almost always American! But this doesn't really bother me either. So yeah, the developer can do what they want. As long as it's not steriotypical to the extent of racism then I won't take any notice. And as long as the character isn't spouting some sort of discriminatory hatred.

Wait, we're discriminating against aliens in so many games! OHNOES

Well, to be fair the Koopas and Goombas have been portrayed as civilians in The Paper Mario series.

Not baddies or anything.

Considering how black people are often drawn in manga or anime, this may be for the best.

Red Ranger -Native American (Yes look it up. Its sad really XD Sure he's a mutt, but its there and you know damn well they used it)
Black Ranger-African America
Yellow Ranger-Asian American
Blue Ranger-While Male American
Pink Ranger-White Girl American

Regarding Goombas and Koopas: While originally portrayed exclusive as the foot soldiers of Bowser's army, I get the impression that only those who reside within the territory of the Koopa Kingdom are actually loyal to Bowser, and even then, most of Bowser's army might be more accurately described as slaves instead of loyal minions.

As for the rangers, which Ranger Team had that racial make-up, and did that team's Sentai counterpart have the same racial make-up?

The first, which is often referred to as if it were the only one, probably because most people didn't watch it long, or don't want to admit to doing so. I'm pretty sure that the Japanese version did not have such a distribution.

If I am not mistaken, nearly every season of both Sentai and Power Rangers features a reboot and a new team of heroes, and Power Rangers only uses the battle scenes from Sentai, using its own story and non-battle scenes. So, most people act as Power Rangers is nothing but Mighty Morphing, and that Zeo, Turbo, and the other dozen or so teams do not exist?

The original 5.
Maybe even the second set of rangers as well, I don't remember exactly..

Man...White Ranger Came, everyone hailed him as a savior, and then he tricked the Red Ranger into giving full control of the team to him. And what did the Red Ranger get? A crappy goodbye episode and smallpox(XD!!!)
