PSP is very strange device. It does about everything save act as a adult entertainment toy and make coffee. Most of the time people that move around alot buy them because of that fact. DS is a fad portable, some VERY strange games on that one.

Both have their own pro's and con's.

PSP ismore for media junkies than gamers, while the DS is more for gamers than media junkies. 'Nuff said.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

Since I had both at one time, I can say that the DS is better for games. The battery power is great and with Mario Kart, the FF ports and other great games coming out, you WILL want a DS...and it comes in better colors...just realize that the touch screen is a load of you know what...

The PSP is one sexy device but it's game selection bites, battery power is really crummy too but then it does have GTA (If you like that) and some other good games coming out...both are an absolute pain to hold for more than a hour...my hand cramped up a lot with extended sessions of DarkStalkers...

DS is cheaper, has a good selection of games, and some promising ones up on the horizon. Being able to play Mario Kart DS on the Internet for free is what sucked me in. Yep, it sure had nothing to do with being an obsessive Sonic fan who'll buy any system Sonic appears exclusively on. >_>

Nothing on the PSP really makes me want to go and buy one though... well ok the Megaman remakes look pretty interesting, but I'll wait for the PSP to come down in price first. =]

If you want to play a large variety of good handheld games now then go for the DS.

It seems that the PSP won't be worth plucking the $250 for gamers until next year when it will have a larger library.

Also, most people are getting the DS for Mario Kart online not Sonic Rush.

The PSP has superior hardware by far, but the DS has a way better pool of games, plus online capability.

It's really up to you. Do you want a 3-hour battery life but the ability to watch movies on a 5-by-5 screen, or do you want untold worlds of innovation and connectivity never seen in a handheld?

You make the call.

EDIT: This post actually brought to you by Wonderbat.
How I ended up in UltimateShadow1337's account, I'll never know. Actually, he's at my house and stayed logged in, but whatever.

If you mean which is more powerfull then the PSP is far better equiped hardware wised, but that also means it uses up it's batteries quicker...

But by Hardware you mean the machine itself, I'd say their evenly matched. The PSP may have more power but does it have touchscreen, microphones, and all the other assembled garbage Nintendo have piled into the DS??? :cuckoo

That said, when I get round to buying one it'll probably be a DS, simply for the final Fantasy games and the fact I can still play GBA games on it, backwards compatability is always a good thing.

OH NO YOU DI'NT! Besides just say LOOK AT THE PUPPIES!

NINTENDOGS FTW! Plus Pink Nintendo DS.

Anyway. Depends on what games you want becasue despite all the thing that PSP does you'll be getting it for the games (I think). If you want racing (its beyond parody how may racing games there are for the PSP)and shooting games get a PSP. For Nintendo games get a DS.

Up to you really.

Even thought John sorta beat me to the post...

Your potential girlfriend would most likely use that "huge and ugly PDA" to play fetch with virtual puppies.:p

...I'm bitter that I never got the chance to get a Pearl Pink NDS Nintendogs bundle since now it is so rare. Oh well, Electric Blue is a nice sub, I guess.

I KNOW that but honestly would you play with a virtual puppy or hold a real life one...

Anyway, FF ports will make me buy a DS...again. Even if I beat said games multiple times...

I like the DS, especially for the custom decal thing you cand do in Need For Speed Underground II. I like it, but PSP has way better graphics, sound, and control.

control.
Control?
CONTROL?!

Explain thyself, good sir.

I don't see how control gets any better than actually physically interacting with the game world itself.

Maybe they are specifically talking about NFSU2 for the DS vs. PSP--I think?

Control: It has, IMHO, a better button layout. IE the Sony equalvalent of Nintendos A button is where it should be, right next to your thumb. On the DS I find it odd the be button was moved where it was. Next the PSP has a very accurate control stick. Control stick seems better than the DS control pad. As for the touch screen, it is good for special functions, but some things are kinda of odd. The touch screen has it limits. In the several game's i've played, the problem is its a lot like an old style mouse on a small mouse pad. You run out of room to move it fast. Theres my reasoning on the control thing. IMHO the controls just seems more precise for the PSPs control stick, game pad than the DS's.

I've got my own DS and I've been having quite the good time on it. ^^ Castlevania, WarioWare and Advance Wars have been really addictively great games. There are still a lot more that I would like too...if money grew on trees.

PSP is cool, and I love the features, but I never really found many games that caught my eye....

Yeah, because girls think that's just WEIRD. I mean, you'd never seen one holding such a thing herself, and certainly the concept of someone ELSE using one would be completely incomprehensible and foreign to her.

We all know girls don't play video games. Come on.

Oh, and psp wins for having an ubeatable homebrew market (Just don't ever update it).
All sorts of emulators and whatnots. So, essentially, a psp can be a snes or genesis etc etc.
Soo PSP since homebrew winz.

The PSP shatters if you drop it from more than three feet.

I literally dropped my DS out of a second story window.

...It hit grass.

It still works, and has jsut a scratch left from a twig.

...And all the scratches and paint blemishes that I caused but keeping it in my pocket with keys...

Only Metal Gear Ac!d really intrests me on PSP.

On the other hand, Sonic Rush, Advance Wars DS, Feel the Magic and Where do Babies Come From?, Mario Kart DS, and even Nintendogs to a small degree, have my intrest (And my wallet).

And whoo. UMDs. Big freaking deal. I can buy the DVD for almost the same price and get tons of special features. Also, the 256MB Mp3 player. I can fit 700MB (Just over 10 hours of music on standard 128 quality) on one CD-R and play it for 140 hours on a $2 pair of AA batteries, a $30 CD-Mp3 CD player (With skip protection, so nyah.), and a fifty cent CD-R (Five for $2.50 at Best Buy). So DS+CD player or PSP.

Gaming: Ten hours with no backlight or maybe five on PSP?

Touch screen, mic, and Nintendo WiFi or no with PSP?

140 hours of Crush 40 or maybe five on PSP?

$67 saved or no with PSP?

I believe the SSBM announcer can say it best: NO CONTEST.

The PSP has a faulty square button, has no games that are anything other than PS2 ports (bar lumines), and costs twice as much.
The DS is innovative, has a large number of interesting games, and is nearly as powerful.
I fail to see the choice unless you've been misled by the mass market.

The PSP faulty button has only been reported with only a few scant units in its early life out of the millions the have been sold worldwide. =P And I wouldn't call the DS nearly powerful as the PSP. An analogy to compare the power between the DS and PSP would be the DS : N64 :: PSP : PS2. The graphical capabilities and the sound of the DS is inferior to the PSP. And there are more than just PS2 ports on the system other than Lumines. What about Metal Gear Ac!d, Mercury, Wipeout Pure, Untold Legends, and Colded Arms? Well okay maybe those last two games probably suck but at least they are not ports. :lol

Eh, my brother accidentally drops his PSP occasionally and it still works fine. No PSP parts scattered here.

Appearently, it is a big freaking deal to people judging by the successful sales of the format. Though I personally don't care for it.

Sony is now selling the PSP Giga Pack at $300 which comes with a 1GB memory stick. Though I would not use the PSP as a primary MP3 player. I too have a portable CD-MP3 player also, but it seems more of a hassle to save all off my MP3s on several discs and keep them catalogue correctly. If I had a PSP I would save maybe a few choice songs there, but I would rather have an actual 30GB MP3 player. =D

Actually I do like the ability to save pictures on the PSP the most as it makes an excellent comic/manga viewer. =D

6 hours of game time on the PSP, however that is longer than I originally expected and that is a decent time considering the power of the handheld.

Bigger screen, analogue control, superior sound, and graphical capbilities, and wasn't the PSP already internet-ready way before Nintendo's Wi-Fi connection?

As opposed to 0 hours on the DS?:p The PSP last ten hours when playing music by the way.

Don't get me wrong, I am quite excited about the DS and I agree it is a better buy this year, but I wouldn't call the PSP total crap yet. I am looking forward to the PSP next year when more games come out and hopefully the system will come in different colors and at a lower price.

Admittedly, the big looker for me, PSP-wise, would be the Mega Man remakes; not much else has jumped out at me as more than a "get this IF you have a PSP", as opposed to a "buy a PSP for this"... WipEout and Lumines look good, too, but I don't know if they're worth $250 on their own (not interested in Metal Gear, for the record).

Along with others, such as Armored Core Formula Front and those two new Mega Man games (I forget the names exactly, Mega Man Powered Up and Maverick Hunter X if I'm remembering right). Not to mention that it is sometimes nice to have portable versions of the console games. More often than not, those tend to be crap on the DS, if it gets them at all. (case in point, compare the DS and PSP versions of Burnout Legends)

I don't own either system myself, as I don't really have much of a need for a portable system, but if I ever did get one I'd definitely go with the PSP by far. There's nothing about the DS that interests me.

Remakes, Shadow Hog? =( Not even interested in Every Extend Extra, Loco Roco(second link is the trailer) or Tokobots?

Well, I didn't mention the Megaman games in my arguement because they were remakes not exactly original games. They are somewhat like ports in contrast to something like MGA.

Sorry, I'll clarify that. Ports, or games that are so near-identical to their console cousins they might as well be.
My point about nothing new or interesting on the PSP remains.

Perhaps he just plain isn't interested in those games.

The point does remain, however, that a large majority of the
games currently available for the PSP are ports or unimaginative racing and/or shooting titles.

Really, so far, the only thing that has captured the minds of hard-core gamers is Lumines. And having played the game extensively, I can't say I blame them.

Also, Ashide, I've never heard of any of the titles in your last post. Japan only perhaps?

Seeing as they're niche titles, even if they WERE coming westward we'd likely never hear of 'em if tweren't for Acid. The only one I'm even faintly aware of is Tokobots.

As "unimaginative" as they may be, I find that they interest me much more than anything I've heard about for the DS. To each his own, I guess. Which pretty much goes back to what was already said at some point, that when deciding which system to go with, it really just depends on what kind of games you prefer personally (despite what other people think of your preferences :p ).

The only one I heard of is Mercury. Should be a worldwide release (i think) Its a puzzzle game in the same sort of place as Marble Madness (I think). If you've ever see the crystal maze where they had to move the liquid through the maze its like that.

So basically a 3D version of that one Pipe Dream game that came with Windows 95.

What's next, Skifree?

No, not really. Pipe Dream is placing pipes to allow a liquid - which you have little control over - to complete a path. Mercury, IIRC, is more a Marble Madness-clone, where you guide the blob through a pre-determined maze, instead of building the path yourself.

Regardless, Acid, all of them sound nice and all, but they don't strike me anywhere near as much of system-sellers as Castlevania, Mario Kart DS, Sonic Rush, New Super Mario Bros., Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, and so on.

Umm...I'm not a PSP expert, but I think the problem is that by playing new PSP games (released by Sony...not homebrew...) a new version of the PSP's firmware is installed on the system, which wipes out the possiblity of using any homebrew titles...

I say yes. Until Christmas, I only have one game, SM64DS, and I have fun with it. I also like to play my GBA games on it too. I'm sure Sonic Rush(the main reason I bought it) will make it worth my while that I bought it! Finally, I love the battery power on it.

Uh, no. Firmware updates are released online for voluntary installation. There's a possibility they might start releasing games that only work if you have "x" firmware revision installed.

Not yet. It's really not a good idea to force people to flash their firmware because then you'll have to deal with the resulting mountain of units with corrupt firmware due to bad flashes.

There we go. Anyone with experience in the computer tweaking scene knows enough about firmware flashes that it's best to avoid them at all costs, and when they absolutely have to do it, to hold their breath and cross their fingers throughout the entire process.

One time I was flashing the BIOS on a customer's PC and the power failed for about twenty seconds. Instant motherboard death.
