When you see it...

Leaked SEGA memo strikes again? Or soul shattering, dream smashing hoax?

I for one would welcome a return to the good old original JSR, and would also encourage Sega to freaking hurry up and make a Wii-Motion Plus based sequel.

Man, I hope this means SEGA plans to keep the Dreamcast classics coming, still some I don't have, plus it's been too long since I played Chu Chu Rocket online.

Bantam Street - North American NTSC version

UKers might be more familiar with this track, I think.

I didn't know you guys got different music for the new levels until just yesterday.

Seeing as I never had a Dreamcast and therefore never played the game, I wouldn't mind if this was true cuz I would sure give it a try.

never had a Dreamcast

The Katana Project was our last, best hope for original and quirky gaming. An internally-developed platform with an advanced PowerVR chipset, 4 controller ports and a built-in 56k modem. A system of great first party titles, arcade perfect ports, the first massively successful online game for consoles and a bevy of strange and alien gaming concepts. A shining beacon in the video game industry, all alone in the night. It was the dawn of the Sixth Generation of Gaming Consoles... the year the Great Mindshare War came upon us all. This is the story of the last of the Sega home systems. The year is 1999. The name of the console... is the Sega Dreamcast.

Reminisce end. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled Jet Set Radio thread.

Sega themselves kind of got hit in the heart by the whole Dreamcast thing, anyway. The sheer amount of amazing intellectual properties they dreamed up in that short span of time was astonishing. Shenmue was revolutionary with it's exploration and grand scale, all of which we take for granted in the modern sandbox era; Jet Set Radio with it's cell shaded graphics was entirely unheard of back then; Chu Chu Rocket was for many the first time they took their consoles online to play across the world.

Yet where are these franchises now. Shenmue is stuck in pergatory, Chu Chu is not on PS3 or Xbox Live where it would SO THRIVE and Jet Set hasn't had that Wii title we've been begging for.

They keep referencing these games in their stupid tennis and racing fiascos. Why not put some effort in and do something with these things. Sod Monkey Ball, let me finally show my wife how awesome Chu Chu Rocket is by rereleasing the damn thing on a nu-gen online service.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Dragula though.

Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown = UNF

Something from Sega that actually makes sense?

I'm growing less convinced that it's real, I've yet to see any official reports from any of the usual game news outlets. This should be big news.

Thing is, Sega really did announce several days ago that the company was being restructured (read: they fired a lot of people) and they were pressing download-only titles from now on. Add that leaked memo a few months back, and you have to figure that releasing their old Dreamcast catalog on XBL and PSN alongside new stuff just makes a whole lot of sense.

Hermmm...House of the Dead 4 without a lightgun for the PS3 or 360? Wonder if that'll be a Natal/Move release...

Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi CONFIRMED for Digital

SEGA® Europe Ltd. and SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced plans to bring classic titles from its popular Dreamcast™ console to Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®Network later this year. Sonic Adventure™ and Crazy Taxi™ will be the first two classics made available, with Sonic leading the pack in Autumn 2010 for the 11th anniversary of the launch of the Dreamcast in Europe.

Each game is based on the original Dreamcast incarnation, featuring all of the gameplay that older players fell in love with, whilst allowing a new audience to discover it for the very first time. The games incorporate all-new enhancements and features such as high resolution visuals and surround sound. Online leader boards are now implemented, allowing players to compare their skills with friends across the world! In addition to this, all-new Achievement and Trophy integration will be available for each game released.

20608Crazy Taxi (1)Launched in Europe on October 14, 1999, the SEGA Dreamcast is one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed consoles of all time. Featuring a software library of over 650 titles, the system was widely hailed as being ahead of its time, and was the first to introduce online console gaming, with Internet support for games through an inbuilt modem.

“The Dreamcast is fondly remembered by a large community of dedicated fans as a console that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, quality and online gaming” commented Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. “There are few things that are more requested from us than making Dreamcast classics available for download in today’s digital market place. We’re very excited to begin offering gamers our beloved Dreamcast titles again on the current console systems.”

Sonic Adventure will be available for download in Autumn 2010. Both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be on display at SEGA’s booth (#2023) at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.

There's a lot of naysayers out there, who claim that the only Dreamcast classics that will be getting this "treatment" will be those 1st party titles that were ported to PC. They point to the decidedly DX-like graphics in the Sonic Adventure pics as proof that Sega's taking the lazy route once again and we're not likely to see anything like Shenmue make the cut.
