Because the PSP2, codenamed NGP (Next Generation Portable) has been announced!!!! It drops UMD in favor of flash cards, has dual analogs, a touch screen on front and touch pad on back, and graphics that rival the PS3!!! No price was revealed, but they plan to release it during this years holiday season. I tell you what it looks freaking awesome and all, but with graphics that supposed to rival the PS3 and all, I bet it'll be high as a kite and I'll probably be sticking with the 3DS and my PSP-3000 for awhile.

There's no way this is gonna be cheap. The PSP suffered due to a higher price point than the DS, as did the PS3 to the 360. I find it weird that all three most recent Sony gaming platforms since the PSP have been high end systems, where as the PSOne and 2 and betters expected to arrive later on yet those systems were two of the most popular in gaming history.

It looks like it'll be awesome as far as tech goes, but I'm not planning to buy one this year.

Okay then. So from reading the article they said that they were showcasing MGS 4 and Uncharted as tech demos. Hopefully they'll have more original projects to show off in the future because ports of games on other systems isn't what I'm looking for in a handheld. That was one of the problems with the original PSP when it launched too many ports, and inferior ports at that! I'm sure Sony has learned from the past so all this is really worry on my part, but I remember buying a PSP when it first came out and had nothing to really play on it well into it's second or third year.

i just bought the xbox and wii, when the prices really fell down. i might squeeze in the 3DS but i gave up on sony forever.  i can live without a PSP or PS3.
so unless they lower their prices sony aint coming in my house <locks the doors and hides the adults>  XD we dont have kids in our house.

Now to be fair, the PS3 is really not so bad...although the price is a tad steep.

Still, there's no need to sound QUITE so anti about them, it's not like the console itself is a bad thing - it works quite nicely!

I'll admit that the system shouldn't be accused of anything other than being far to expensive, but SONY has a lot to answer for.

I'm sure they'll have more projects then them but just showed them to show off what it could do.

NGP is just a placeholder name, right? RIGHT?

Looks nice. About $699 nice. Which is about 400 dollars TOO nice. Anyways, early impressions suggest that the analog sticks will be actual sticks that tilt and not that little slider thing. I had a hard time adjusting to that on the PSP.

Yeah, like I said in the OP, it's just a codename...then again DS was originally supposed to be just a codename, too. Anyway, I don't think there's anyway Sony won't use the PlayStation brand name on it, and I couldn't think what the NG could mean in NGPlayStation; unless they would officially call it New Generation Playstation, and that's lame. Also, gotta agree that it's probably will be one expensive piece of equipment; though, I'm not so sure it will be that high. I mean surely Sony isn't that stupid right? Right???!!!

Sony themselves said they hope to make this 'affordable'. Now while Sony's definition of that may differ from...well the world, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and figure they learned from their previous failures.

Hopefully those rumors about a 3G model and a 3G-less model are true.

SNES introduces shoulder buttons. PS1 introduces TWO OF THEM!

N64 introduces analog control. Dual Shock introduces TWO OF THEM!

Wii introduces motion remote. PS3 introduces it WITH A BALL AT THE TOP!

DS introduces touch screen. NGP introduces TWO OF THEM!

Neon Genesis Playstation would actually make for a kickass name for the device. =D

If I have to guess I would say they system wouldn't cost more than 300-400 big ones. Sony says they want to make it affordable but after the $600 PS3 fiasco you'll have to forgive me if I remain cautious. I'll probably pick it up though (let's face it I picked everything else up) regardless of price.

but sega named its system genesis before. though it does seem a shame no one is thinking of better names for new systems   3DS is okay i guess sounds cool, but playstation and xbox need new systems with new names... espacially the psp.

you know i used to think a PSP was a playstation one device you can hook up to the ps3 to play ps1 games X___X i didnt know it was a new high quality system till much much later. i might have bought it instead of the DS if it had a better name  its such a confusing name.

Sonicfan, it was an anime name reference...hence why it was even thrown out there!

And the PSP was released before the PS3. o.o

Nobody I know calls a playstation port a PSP, Mada. XD;

Sorry to say, but the PSP is actually a well known brand name...so for most, it's actually easy to identify!

Information on the NVG card, the media of the NGP, it will have a 2 GB and 4 GB variety.

So, it's basically a dedicated game memory card?

Man I hope the UMD-using PSP 3000 will still be supported for a while. If not, I will not be amused. I just got the thing. ]8<

I did, Mada. The name pretty much says it: Play Station Portable.

Regardless of whether or not they continue to make content for the psp when this thing comes out (which I doubt) it doesn't mean the psp hasn't already got a drop dead awesome library of games for cheap. I've got like 35 psp games I need to play. >__________>;

Okay, my predictions. It will have the same problem previous models have had. Very small game selection, overpriced games, overpriced model, and most of all, no backwards compatibility. It's that last one that bothers me. I mean, the others can be justifiable- maybe they're so expensive because they really are premium products, (which they are, although still pretty expensive for what they are) but when you add that to the lack of backwards compatibility, it crosses the line of "Expensive, but justifiable" and becomes "Pointless Sony price gouging." Just my two cents.

Admittedly the lack of umd playability is an annoying factor but considering how terrible the umd medium is and how much more it would add to the cost of the ngp its absence isn't terribly missed. Besides you can still play psp games that have been downloaded off the psn so it's kinda got half backwards compatability.

Well that was the deciding factor for me when it comes to not wanting the PSPgo. You can't deny, THAT was a HUGE disaster. Also, something else about this NGP... it doesn't look too different from the 3000, IMHO.

And what does it matter if it looks like a 3000, why wouldn't the PSP2 have a design similar to its predecessor? I have heard though that they were thinking about using a Go design for the NGP.

Honestly the NGP looks fantastic to me. I can't really see any faults for criticising its appearance, I love it <3

I have to agree with you there, Pachy, the NGP is one fine, sleek looking piece of machinery; and so is the 3DS.

Edit: BTW, I love the white one too, it looks awesome!! ^_^

The Live Area interface of the NGP in action! Also, the NGP may actually be called the PlayStation Vita! More evidence it will be called Vita.
