i'm surprised that no one started a topic about this. i'm sure at least half of us are mmorpg gamers.
anyway i'm mostly playing maplestory and i used to play perfect world but now that a new game is out i'm playing forsaken world. what about the rest of you?
p.s: for the girl members i just have to say, perfect world is the best for us there's mermaids and really neat graphics and hot characters. the only flaw is the interface.. i dont like reading the long text in quests its not as fun doing those quests as doing maplestory quests.
that 3 days idea you have is something i wish they'd use pach man, not to mention i played a ps2 game with that idea and have an idea how it would turn out.
mmorpgs do have flaws like the lack of a solid storyline ... or not finding people to join. i think the problem is the age thing, but what's the worst thing about mmorpgs is they keep the uk gamers and the american (international) gamers on 2 different games. -______- my timeline is closer to british but they're not allowed to play with us, and americans are asleep when i'm online so i end up playing with people who cant speak english. or staying up in the odd hours to play with Kay. why does europe have to part itself from the world? even japanese and korean gamers complain at not being able to join the international game server.
if any of you want me to play an mmorpg with you i wont mind i'm a good gamer and i try to play online regularly, like toby and terg said its fun to play with others... i wish the mofo had its mmo.
I've been playing City of Heroes for over 6 years now, take a few months that I've left the game here and there out of boredon/low income. There used to be a few CoH players here in fact, it was thanks to Crimson Darkwolf who introduced me to a group of RPers in game that have become good friends of mine in my offline life.
As for the game itself, it still has the best character creation tool I've used in a game, allowing for a wide variety of designs and ideas to be formed. The gameplay is pretty quick for an MMORPG from before WoW (even if only by a few months), and has a great sense of power in the later levels.
It's superhero themed also, which put it litterally in a league of it's own until September 2009 when Champions Online came out, and last year with DC Universe Online. Despite that though it's still the better game in my opinion, and neither one has defeated CoH.
i was curious about that game, i didnt know you can make your own hero i thought it was boring cause i thought you had to stick to the original characters.... if it has wonderwoman i might play it though.
is there anything else you played that was neat? i care a lot about character customization.
City of Heroes has nothing to do with Marvel or DC, so no Wonder Woman. DC Universe Online has Wonder Woman though, as an NPC.
And I've also played Guild Wars, Eve Online, Champions Online, Age of Conan, Mabinogi, and have tried loooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaads of free MMOs out there.
None have caught my attention like CoH did though. That said I found Eve Online to be a very compelling idea and setting, but sadly very dull.
I did play an MMO once, but I don't any more. I'm half thinking of looking into Star Trek Online...if anyone has tried it and can give me a review or some feedback to take into consideration it'd be much appreciated, thanks.
I tried it as a beta tester and don't like STO.
* Excellent customization as you can generally expect from the company that made COH and CO, though it is not quite up to those 2.
* The plot involves a Klingon war, which is what deterred me most. The general history of Star Trek is of increased cooperation with the Klingons and they just kind of bleeped that to support a cliche 2 faction model.
* It is essentially an alternate mode of the CO engine, so it is a combat centric game. At beta they had exploration quests which were nothing but landing at autogenerated planets and clicking 5 objects.
* They've addressed some of the complaints about no exploration and diplomacy with exploration and diplomacy quests but since I have not tried it since the beta I can't say how good they are.
* It lets you make a ship and customize it to a degree, along with a crew, and that is what is best of the features. Space combat is good but it was somewhat repetitive when I tried it, though I was under level 10.
* You also get to command an away team, but it is incredibly clunky and slow and half of the content is away teaming.
* LOTS of references to every iteration of Star Trek.
* The space music is quite good.
I'd definitely try it again if it went free but I wouldn't spend a lot there.

yeah me too @ eve.... though i was thinking of guild wars but when i saw guild wars 2 i decieded to wait for that to come out first. as for mabinogi i was confused with it, if you think eve is dull i'll trust your opinion on the others too. i'm going to try playing COH this week i'll post back here on how i feel about it .. i'm really intersted in trying it out at least. -____- i'm still looking for the one.
robo what game do you think has the most fun quests to do? i want a game like maplestory's quests but 3D and good with character designs. if you can remember a game that fits that please please let me know.
I've never played an mmo before. Don't really know why, I guess I just don't like having to constantly pay more money in a subscription to continue playing the game, and free ones tend to be naff. I also prefer having a focused story like in other rpgs, and mmos don't tend to provide that beyond pointing, clicking and killing an enemy.
However I will say there is one mmo coming out that has been so seriously excited that I'm wetting myself. Tera! It just looks so ridiculously pretty!
I tell you what though, I'd love to see an actual zombie survival mmo. Not just a generic shooter where you go around blasting zombies like say, Left 4 Dead, but where you actually have to work together with scores of people in managing resources, bases and bullets and such just to make sure you don't die. It'd be a great game.
Or an alternative I had was a 3 day cycle mmo where you start in the middle of a fully explorable city and you have to evacuate the city within 3 real time days in the midst of a zombie apocalypse before the city is destroyed by, say, a nuke. (Raccoon City much?) You wouldn't have to be online for 3 days straight, if you can properly build a safehouse than your character would be safe to quit. And if you died during those three days, then well hey, you can still play as a zombie! And over the course of the three days zombies would begin to evolve and get more powerful and challenging L4Desque, making it fun to play as both zombie and human! And even if you scuffed it all up then well hey, it'd reset in just three days. Honest to god that would be my ideal mmo ever <3
First one doesn't inspire much confidence that it's an Arcade title and the second one is looking pretty horrendous.
I basically want the upcoming Dead Island as, well, an mmo, really.
i thought tera was out but not in english. guild wars 2 will be wonderful too... but i guess tera is more colorful. as for what you said you know i keep wondering stuff like you too pach. i mean the zombie idea is great. there should be mmorpgs with different ideas i'm a little tired of all this fantasy i want sci fi and real time and the races should be more its just sad there's only one game that has mermaids in it. i want another one also more fighting classes like in city of heroes i liked the customization of abilites.
i need an original mmorpg with outstanding races. also i havent found a game with good furries. i dont want a human with cat ears i want real furry race. damn sonic team why cant they make me a sonic mmorpg i swear it will be huge and legendary.
again pachman i like your zombie idea, though the best zombie game is deadrising if they can make it into an mmorpg that would be neat. i loved the quests in it.
I've tried a number of MMOs over the years - both RPGs and more instance-based action things. Some of them have even died out (like Exteel, BOTS) or switched developers/hosters (RF Online) since I've played them. But most MMORPGs tend to bore me after a while - I'll get excited and want to customize myself into a really helpful party member, but end up never finding enough people to play with consistently for it to matter. Not to mention that I often like to multi-task while gaming online, but at a certain point most MMORPGs have monsters that will attack you simply for looking at them wrong, which makes it really hard to multi-task when you're trying to keep your character from becoming dragon chow.
Games that are too instance-based tend to annoy me too - usually because the sense of progression is very slow to keep you from getting all the best gear, and I like making visible progress in a game with better and cooler looking gear. Exteel was a perfect example of this; you'd have to pay loads of in-game cash to buy even a single new weapon, and said weapon would have only a certain amount of time to use before you'd have to go back to the default gear.
I never pay real money if I can help it, so free MMOs are more appealing, albeit annoying because no matter how much they say you can have all the features as a person who pays money, the fact is that money in a micro-transaction game lets you get better gear faster, sometime even access to exclusive weapons that you have to pay money for. Team Fortress 2, as a game, is well-balanced and makes a specific effort to make sure weapons sold in their in-game store aren't unbalancing, but it's an extreme rarity among micro-transaction games. Even in Spiral Knights, you can make a ludicrous amount of ingame money quickly by buying Crystal Energy with real money, then selling that to people for in-game cash if you desperately want to move ahead in the game. At least in SK you can use ingame money to buy CE this way, but that requires a lot of time if you aren't willing to spend real money to begin with.
There are a number of mecha MMOs out there, but many of them are either cruddy imitations of the MMORPG stereotype, are poorly translated, have poor gameplay, or are not being released ever in the States because of a perceived lack of fans. Metal Rage Online looked like it would have been awesome, for example, but after years of having a forum talking about its eventual release here in the States, GameHi has deleted the forum and all connection to Metal Rage. Mecha games, especially ones with customization, are not that easy to come by; but in the MMO world there's even less options. You're lucky if you can find a game that allows you to pilot a mecha-like vehicle of some type, much less one dedicated to mecha that has quality to it.
Actually, Terg's post reminds me of another primary reason why I don't like mmo's and that is that they don't prioritise any real gaming skill over just having A LOT OF MONEY OR A LOT OF TIME on a player's hands.
Which is why the 3 day mmo cycle idea I have is so fascinating to me since it pretty much ruins those concepts and make it far more of a dip and dive type game. Also, Mada, Dead Rising is somewhat similar to how I'd like it to play; third person view, a number of missions to complete, being able to pick up and use pretty much anything and everything around you as a survival weapon, but with the teamwork of Left 4 Dead, zombie and powered zombie ideas of L4D as well but all with the gorgeous looks of Dead Island. I would keeeeeel for a game like that.
Also you're right, Tera is out, but I'm afraid I DO NOT UNDERSTAND KOREAN #X_X#
I needs it in english baaaaaaad
Champions here because I'm lifetime so it's free till the servers shutdown plus it has a free account thing now so the kids can play it.
And what Vec said about STO. I'd probably still be playing it if it had hit before Champions. I was Beta on it too and it was VERY interesting. Almost wanna fire up the account for a month to see how they've improved it.
The key to an MMO being good has nothing to do with the mmo itself but with the people you have to play it with. I played SWG for three years, only left after everyone quit when they made it easy mode with the CU and nailed the coffin shut with the NGE. Basically if you have people to play with an mmo is fun. If you don't, it will be boring as hell.
It says "front-facing camera." Does that mean it's facing the player? It sounds more like it's facing the TV, IE, facing forward from the player, not at them.
if its facing the tv okay its just better not be at an odd angle. and pach man that isnt healhty you'll get a butt rash really, sitting naked for so long cant be good for your skin.
