This seems like a dumb gimmick to me.

Then again, the two screens on the DS seemed like a dumb gimmick to me also, and that turned out pretty well. So we'll see.

All's I know is that I'll be pre-ordering and getting it the day it comes out, as I did with the GBA and with the DS.

It is backwards compatible...

Besides, the DS was released in 2004... 6 years is a pretty good run... especially for a system that is vastly underpowered compared to the rival platform.

I agree with Dirk. I will be preordering this new system.

Hmm maybe...don't know how popular the 3D thing is (I know I hate those annoying glasses you wear at those 3D movies) but it could work. Won't buy it but it'll be interesting to see. Except for the Micro, Nintendo has done pretty well on the portable front so they're free to try whatever they want.

This does seem fishy. 3D Gaming either requires specical glasses or crossing your eyes. What is the only other way.. head tracking? People would not move their head around with a portable device. I also doubt it would have the ability to handle 3D information without being too expensive. So yeah, I'm thinking early April fools.

It's coming from the official Nintendo website... do the Japanese even celebrate April Fools?

Great way to kill off any potential sales of the DSi(XL) over the next few months and at xmas as people will hold onto their cash and await the newest offering from ninty

Also the 3d'ness could be interesting since i've only seen one example irl of a system that doesn't use "3d glasses" to view, which was a laptop and you had to sit in a specific position for it to work.

Look like the Nintendo 3DS will have a 3D joystiq, LCD screens by Sharp and somekind of rumble feature.

Maybe it'll use a camera to simulate 3D like this DSiWare game.

Either way, I think I'll wait for the better-looking, more portable redesign.

The Apple Approach then?

         Or the DS approach?

This whole thing seems pretty interesting. Unless some really cool games come out early, I'll wait a bit.

really the nintendo DS has been out that long? my how the years fly.... and now they're making a 3D system... now i know how my grandpa felt when the internet came out!

<scratching head>  um.... how is that a 3D joystick? it looks like a pen to me.

That's not the actual system. Nobody knows what the thing looks like. It'll probably be revealed at E3.

The article IS for the 3DS... the image is just a filler... most sites would rather post some image with a news article than nothing at all...

I have a question:

What does 3D on a screen actually mean? I have never witnessed it. Are certain objects behind a closer object when I'm looking from one angle yet completely unobscured when I look from a second angle? I can't really fathom what a special 3D screen is supposed to be for :O

I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean that you've never seen a 3D movie, or that you've seen 3D movies but can't understand what that would look like on a screen you hold in your hands? If it's the latter, then I'm as mystified as you are.

"3D" is just an optical illusion of depth, and I think it only really works assuming your viewing angle for the screen is more or less stationary (which is why it works in a cinema, when you're pretty far from the screen, so moving your head slightly doesn't do much). Since this is probably the same illusion, I don't expect that it will allow you to see "around" objects in the way you describe. But then again, I don't understand how they can even implement that kind of illusion on the DS screen in the first place, let alone without glasses. Maybe they expect you to hold the thing in front of your face and maintain the same viewing angle for as long as you play. Which sounds kind of dumb.
I don't really "get" 3D. It looks pretty nifty for about 10 minutes and then I just get over it, and eventually I just keep wishing it would stop. Maybe that's because I wear somewhat thick glasses, so that might somehow impair my ability to enjoy the full glorious bounty of the visual feast that is 3D or whatever.
I think Nintendo really screwed the pooch on this one, so to speak. What they needed was to keep this quiet until they had a chance to demo it for game journalists at E3. Then those journalists could experience how it works and reassure us that everything's going to be all right. It would be better than having us wait around scratching our heads for a few months.

From what I hear...Japanese business people pushed for it because it seems rather promising? Or at least pushed Nintendo a little quicker than they wanted...but those are just rumors. *shrugs*

Thanks, and no I've never seen a 3D movie, so I wasn't sure about that either. If things are just supposed to pop out I don't really agree with calling it 3D, as in a perfect world where a screen could mimic a 3D environment, I should be-able to move about and see different things behind the object meant to appear closest, shouldn't I?

And apparently, from what you say, 3D movies have not yet even implemented this theoretical technology yet. Poo. I wonder about the 3D television being advertized lately. Also I wonder if Sharp's new Quattron Aquos line of televisions that add a fourth color (yellow) to the spectrum would produce a more human-brain-agreeable representation of something realistic than current 3D tech (I still need to see both).

I cannot comment on existing 3D technology as all rely on binocular vision, and I have only one functioning eye.

As for Quattron, adding a fourth basic color certainly increases the number of total colors, but considering that 24-bit RGB already produces far more colors than the human eye is capable of distinguishing, I am not sure the technology has any practical value.

As for the perspective trick Shifty describes, I have seen it tech demoed with Wii homebrew. That demo used infrared lights mounted to glasses and the Wiimote's infrared camera to track the player's head relative to the screen, and I saw a video of a DSi game the did similar with the DSi's front camera.

That sounds amazing to me. @ Perspective trick. Also, sort of a side-note: Wikipedia's article about something called "tetrachromacy". Put shortly, recent studies have shown that it is possible some people see many more colors than the person with 'average' color-vision standing next to them; possibly about half of the population.

I am VERY intrigued. I don't really exactly understand how it will do it and what kind of '3D' effect it will give... like, will it be the kind of tech Shifty's been talking about? Is it what I saw in that DSiWare game demo video, or will it be the kind of 3D that has been shown in movies since as early as the 1950s... but, somehow, without the glasses?

I DO agree it was a bad marketing strategy on Nintendo's part for exactly the same reason stated before. It will kill DSiXL sales. I don't think anybody should be able to pressure them into announcing it early, that doesn't make sense to me. Which is why I think it's VERY possible that it was an early April Fool's. (Off Topic: What is with that holiday???)

So that's meh.

Portable 3D games? I'm not sure if that is such a good idea. Think of the killer motion sickness you would recieve while riding in the backseat of a car or on the bus. I just hope that it has like a switch that you can switch on or off for 3D to 2D. It kinda reminds me of Metal Gear Ac!d 2 on PSP, which you could play the entire game in 3D with super ridiculous looking glasses. The 3D effect was decent, but seriously hurt your eyes after 30 minutes of play. I just wonder if Nintendo has any tricks to make this work, or will it be Virtual Boy 2?

Didn't Virtual Boy (Epic Fail) have glasses...?

I dont think they would make it to where you couldn't play it without 3D. There will inevitably be OTHER features on there to attract a wider audience of consumers, and it would be unfair for people like Jeffery Mewtamer or even my sister not to be able to experience such features, all because of forced 3D. So I'm sure they will make it an option, or they shouldn't even sell it at all.

I have never owned a Virtual Boy, but based on images I have seen, its headgear would be more accurately described as a visored helmet, and a rather bulky one at that. Modern video glasses illustrate that the concept could be redone with a smaller form factor and full-color, but would still be ridiculously expensive.

And from what I heard was a complete flop.  Lots of complaints about neck pain and headaches, IIRC.

I know this is a big bump but remember today's the day that Nintendo is reavealing the big stuff about the 3DS; I'm using IGN's and Kotaku's coverage to see it. I don't feel like going into much detail cuz y'all can read, but I will say VC is coming to the 3DS and it does include GB and GBA games, baby!!!! Edit: 3DS will release in Japan on Feb. 26, 2011 and in March 2011 for NA and Europe!

Edit #2: If you look at the IGN page again, apparently, it hasn't been confirmed that GBA games will be available for dl yet. 🙁

GAAAAAAH! *head. desk. slam* You know, I bought a DSi in hopes they would do a VC for Game Boy games for it. I risked not being able to play FFVI Advance and Drill Dozer by wasting money on a handheld I realize I really don't need because they didn't do a virtual console with it. Shantae: Risky's Revenge had better be the best game ever.

Looks like we may have a release date of the release date soon! According to the article, Nintendo is having a press conference on the 19th of January both in Amsterdam and New York. It's not confirmed that the Western release date and price of the 3DS will be revealed here but seems like both conferences being on the same day is too much of a coincidence for it not to be it!
