And of course, there's this news as well. Only 500,000 units? Madness!
As for it being cheaper due to the delay, I'd have to say don't count on it. PSPs weren't cheaper by virtue of being released centuries later than when it was out in the US and Japan, nor any other console I can think of.
Pat was right, they wouldn't be able to get the world wide release by the end of 07. Poor guy had Cassandra syndrome.
Clearly this is a sign that Sega is re-entering the console market.
Seriously, even if he was right on a few points, the way he constantly touted that impossibility really limited any reliability the guy had.
Not to mention 256-bit processors. No such thing.
It's the first sign, Craig. The first sign that everything Pat has spoken was the truth all along!
Pat is Segastadomus!
Great Job, Sony! Now how many units of the non-gimped version are in the initial 100,000JP/400,000US?
I just love how this manages to be worse than the monumental @#%$ up that was the Xbox 360 launch. Which should have been impossible.
Oh well... *Hugs Ken Kutargi*
Euro Santa is gonna have a lot of Wii's in his sack this year. I'm kinda mixed over this. While I didn't want to pay AU $1000 for a PS3, I really want to play Sonic, and Xbox 360 isn't what I want to play it on. Now I have to decide whether to just give in to spoilers and wait till March to play it, or buy an Xbox 360 which I never wanted in the first place. =/
It better be cheaper here when it is released.
It's coming out on PC in Europe. Now, while admittedly Australia ISN'T Europe, the two regions are pretty closely linked, aren't they?
o.o @ Ashide's pic

Yeah, Australia generally gets things the same time as Europe. I completely forgot there was a PC version of it, that settles it then. Now all I have to do is find a decent controller for my PC (I was thinking of getting one to play Phantasy Star Universe on my PC anyway)
That font is from Spider-man. 0o
They probably used that because it's the PS3 font too.

An Xbox 360 controller?
Just be sure to use the XBCD drivers; the default ones SUCK. No deadzone. Some games can cope, but others will make you very much aware that there's a problem with the deadzone of them analog sticks.
Plus you can reconfigure the controller using those drivers, while you can't with the official ones. Want the two back triggers to be digital buttons instead of an analog Z-axis? Go right ahead.

The Logitech Cordless RumblePad 2 is quite nice.
I think I'll go with the 360 controller, because the Logitech seems similar to the PS2 controller and I don't like low analogue sticks, it just doesn't feel right when playing some games. I believe your thumb should be pointing as far up as possible on the analogue stick (like with the NGC controller), not almost directly right as with the PS2 controllers analogue stick.
I haven't actually had a go with the 360 controller, but it looks like the analogue stick is located better than the Logitech. Thanks for the advice though. =]
The 360 controller is not God's gift to gamers as was previously reported. The d-pad is incredibly flimsy bordering on the ridiculous. You wouldn't use this for a game of Street Fighter, no sir. But for games that use the analog sticks exclusively it's pretty damn good.
I bought the Logitech PC controller, and compared to the no-name controller I had previously, it was amazing. Much more precise control on the D-pad, and overall great control with joystick. It was also twenty dollars cheaper than the official Xbox360/PC controller.
Granted, I've only used it for older games thus far. But I'm suitably impressed that it was worth my money.

Well, that's true. But hey, if you're primarily using it for 2D games, there's the USB Saturn controller. Now THAT'S a pad for Street Fighter.
Speaking of both Saturn and Street Fighter, I recently ordered Street Fighter Collection... and now I need to get a new pad, since my A button is finnicky. The 3D Pad'll do just fine if I'm doing single player, but if I'm gonna play against anyone, I'd like something better than a somewhat-broken official Model 2 pad and a not-really-broken third-party pad.
This'd be my first Street Fighter, though. Hopefully, there's a somewhat forgiving CPU option in addition to all the challenging ones, so I can come to grips with things. That'd be nice.
I absolutely love the 360 controller, best gamepad I've owned. Definitely want the XBCD drivers when using it on a PC though. The D-pad seems fairly decent to me, not as precise as on the Sony controllers, but still good and quite confortable. The only Logitech controller I've owned was the Logitech Dual Action, and I hated it. That thing's D-pad was the worst atrocity I've ever had to use. Hopefully they've improved that with newer controllers. Seems like I can never find a PC gamepad with a decent D-pad though, the 360 controller is the best I've found so far, short of a PS1/2 adapter.
I find that interesting. Back in the day we used to joke about Sony placing a disclaimer on PS1 controllers that read CAUTION: MAY BREAK THUMBS due to the rigidness of the d-pad. Still, it's easier to pull off hadoukens with it than the 360's so I'll give it that.
Would the Xbox 360 recognize the Saturn USB pad? If so, I might consider it for Hyper Fighting purposes.
Of course, even a decent d-pad wouldn't help save anyone from the utter cheapness of the people who spam the hundred hand slap.

Yeah, the Sony D-pads definitely aren't the most comfortable around, but I find them to be the most accurate and precise of any I've used. I still get a sore thumb after playing extended amounts of RayStorm, though...

Gran Turismo HD: Two Versions, Tons Microtransactions
Famitsu reports a brand new model for Gran Turismo on PS3.
by Luke Smith, 09/20/2006There's horse armor and then there's the kind of microtransactions that Famitsu is reporting (via: Beyond3D and the vitriolic NeoGAF). According to the Famitsu inteview with Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo HD will have two SKUs on the PS3. One of these games will ship with no cars, all of them will be purchased via microtransactions.
The other, Gran Turismo HD: Premium, will ship with two courses and 30 cars, with an additional 30 cars and an additional two courses online at a later date. The Premium game is being considered a prologue to the PS3's eventual Gran Turismo 5.
The microtransaction-focused game, Gran Turismo HD: Classic will be the online-focused entrant into the GT-series. In this game, players will (reportedly) start with no cars or courses available to them. Instead, they will need to purchase their stable of cars and courses to race on. The pricing reported in the Famitsu piece indicated that cars would cost between 50-100 yen ($0.43-$0.85) and courses between 200-500 yen ($1.71-$4.26). There are approximiately 750 cars and 50 tracks available for purchase in the GT: HD Classic. Let's do the math:
# 750 cars for $0.50-$1.00 (Sony will round-up, don't you think?)
# 50 tracks for $1.50-$4.50A complete copy of the game will cost gamers somewhere between $426.50 and $975, and that's without factoring in whatever Sony decides to charge for the menus (since that's all you'll get with GT HD: Classic).
Does this sound a little familiar? It should. Phil Harrison alluded to a possible future like this one last June in OPM.
I'll give you an example; Kazunori [Yamauchi, producer of the Gran Turismo series] would kill me for this: Imagine Gran Turismo shipping on a disc with one car and one track. And then you can browse, online, a dynamic circuit of vehicles that's growing every day because either the car manufacturers are adding new vehicles or we're adding new vehicles. And you can see a specific-type car that's being called up and say, "I think I'll play with that one. Let me download and play it." Maybe the business model allows you to play it for a day; maybe the business model allows you to own it forever. But that content is now yours on your hard drive. Or [maybe you could download] new tracks, new music, whole games.
Now, is it possible that the game will be a full-priced title with a built-in download system that allows users to download cars and tracks equal to the number of the game's retail price? We hope the model ends up similar to this. However, right now, details are extremely sparse, and Sony has to have an answer to these questions -- most of the people who can answer are over in Tokyo, we'll update if we hear back.
Welcome to next-gen.
In-freaking-deed.
You know at some point, this'll just become beating up old fans.
I mean, my GOD Vanessa! Do we really have to sit back and watch as this company with all the arrogance of the late Tom Cruise would strut around with it's trousers at it's ankles telling any person unfortunate enough to gaze it's way to stop staring and start eating?! We're human BEINGS for heavens sake! Taking advantage of OCD sufferers! Bad Sony, Bad, Bad, Bad! You go to bed with no treats and we don't want you whining, cos if you wake up Nintendo and Microsoft, you'll be the one to clean newbie puke and old person bowel droppage! COMPRENDE SONY!
...dudes. I have no idea what I just typed. But the jist is, NO! Just NO!
I'd suffer sleepless nights knowing I owned a game which I couldn't 100% for fear of bankrupcy (it's why I never got into CCGs). Sony really do believe that they are the second coming and can do whatever the hell they damn want because people will eat their rancid turds.
How can I hate a company which I've loved so well? How could they do this to me!? YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE! You were supposed to destroy the dark side! NOT JOIN THEM!!!
Craig wins the thread.
...and I can't really think of anything else to say. I'm left unable to do anything but laugh at the depths of Sony's incredible stupidity. Just when I think they couldn't get any worse, they drop something like this as if to prove that their insanity is just beginning. The concept of paying that much for the game is just ridiculous, especially when it's not going to be much more than GT4 in shiny HD graphics as far as I know.
Some good news for a change: the cheaper PS3 WILL have HDMI after all, and in Japan said version is going for a whole 10,000 cheaper than previously announced, roughly down to, in US dollars, $425. No word yet on a price change in America or Europe; if there was, though, Sony might not be AS hopeless as thought.
Ah, yes. The Gt4 business.
General consensus appears to be that Sony are trying to fail.
Don't know if this exactly belongs here, but according to this website Sony made a fact sheet with several fallacies like saying it's required to get the HD DVD drive for the 360 and that the Wii online service is only free for six months. Now I don't know how credible this site is, and I got it from a thread at the Nsider Forums, aka, Nintendo fanboy haven; however, if Sony really did release it, it isn't nice to lie.
The misconception about the Wii online service is it will only be free for 6 months...
It's actually the Oprah Browser that applies in this case - the Browser is what you will have to pay for with the one off payment via Wiipoints, and not the service itself.
Sony's propaganda knows no boundries...and, apparently - no intelligence, either.
Firstly, Microsoft actually said that Hard Drives were going to be optional. Then a port of a 5 year old PS2 title came along. So I'm just thinking there could be HD-DVD only games in the future.
Mind you it just sounds so slander-licious.
Secondly, There is a serious lack of respect for the law.
THANK YOU BRUSSELS!
Whoa, Sony really hate europeans gamers. I don't know they even bother, europeans gamers are gonna find a way to imported without Sony knowing.
Kaz Hirai: How dare you disturb my giant enemy crab dinner!
Nameless Sony Exec: Sorry, sir, but you see... Lik Sang... they're... they're buying our hardware and selling it to Europeans! Those monsters are INCREASING OUR SALES!
Kaz Hirai: WHAT? Europeans can't have anything good! Sue Lik-Sang! That'll hit their weak point for massive damage... oh yeah, and see to it we issue a press statement to our European customers.
Nameless Sony exec: Yes, sir.
Wow, Ultra actually has a valid point for once, even if it is hidden behind a fat wall of un-humour.
Cut the condescending comments, please, even if they're mixed with compliments, too.
Sony, Sony, Sony. What are we going to do with you?
Don't worry Shadow Hog.
Wonderbat's just trying to be the best cloud he can be. o.-
What I said counts for you too, Ultra.
Picture the scene if you will.
Bill Gates walking in the middle of downtown Sydney, Australia. While its raining heavily. And there is a lot of suited beaurocrats.
"Mr Gates"
"Kutaragi"
Of course it will never happen like that... 🙁
*falls over laughing*
This is just too funny...
EDIT: And on another Sony related note (not quite PS3 related, but I didn't know if it really warranted making a new topic), Sony has apparently killed Lik-Sang.com:
www.gamespot.com/news/6160381.html
www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3901
Nice.
I know this link only repeats the link that Zero posted, but still I couldn't help but laugh at the stuff they say Sony are saying to make them look like their doing it for the customers' best interest. It looks like Sony is now trying to hang itself, and I for one will not have a problem if Sony digs their own grave and bury themselves as well.
Ads for the PS3 seem a little bit silly as they have only about 4 consoles to sell, and those will sell out in minutes/seconds.
I don't get it =(
That's an advert? How was it promoting andthing that it can do?
Profits report for the last quarter:
Sony: Down 94%
Nintendo: Up by more than 200%
This seemed like as agood as place as any to drop that.
Did anyone see the Rubic cube adver for the PS3? The baby one scares me. =O
I haven't seen the Rubix cube but a friend told me about it.
It's quite clear: Sony is out to kill other toys.

Right out of left field.
