Personally, I like to see Sony fail. For me, though, it's more akin to rooting for sports teams. I am a Nintendo fan, and therefore I like to see Nintendo doing well in the so-called "console wars." Therefore, a blow against Sony or Microsoft is sort of a victory for me.

No, see, I want Sony to fail because of the existing monopoly they have on the market. Sure, Microsoft and Nintendo were there last gen, but they're considerably more along the lines of a niche market than what Sony has.

Now, by "fail", I don't mean "collapse entirely and die a horrible death" necessarily - just something that will completely even the playing field. Remember the days of SNES vs. Genesis? Sure, they had their downs (elementary school arguments over this were almost always fruitless), but you got a wide variety of awesome games from all sorts of companies due to the competition brewing, no matter what console you owned. This past gen, Microsoft had Halo, Nintendo had Nintendo games, and Sony had pretty much everything (a gross understatement for all three companies, sure, but it's kinda what it boils down to). Seems incredibly biased toward Sony to me. Not really what I'd deem ideal...

The Dreamcast's failure sucked, but that's not really why I want Sony to not be as successful this generation as they were last generation.

Shadow Hog said pretty much most of what I was thinking, only in a much more coherent manner than I would have. Yay.

Although I can't say the whole "collapse entirely and die a horrible death" thing would bother me much. :D

Shadow Hog sums up how I feel mostly, but it's more that I feel no sympathy for Sony, their arrogance this time has been rediculous, and I the more I hear about the PS3, the more the bad outweighs the good for me. I'm sure it will have some fantastic games, and I'm sure it will sell well when people can actually buy it, but the sheer amount of confidence is too much, though this is mostly from Kuturagi himself, who I would've paid to shut up by now.

Honestly, I love my PS2, and the PS1 before, and I do want a PSP and PS3 for games they'll be getting or already have. I am a Dreamcast fan too, since I love playing the games I own on that system, but I don't blame Sony for Sega going down, since the Dreamcast definately had its faults, but I can't say I don't enjoy see Sony taking a few punches, just wish they'd learn from them.

Oh, and for the record, in Europe, we only get the expensive PS3 model, no other options.

What will probably happen this gen is Sony will come in third, learn their lesson, and come back stronger next time around. Also the PS3 sales will undoubtedly pick up once there's more machines in the retail channel.

Oh yes Shadow Hog got it precisely. Heck no I don't want Sony to fail miserably into a pit of bankruptcy. However, not winning the console wars just might tone down their ego centric attitude. =) But Cyke has definetly got a point...once the supply increases, oddly enough so will the demand. =P

There already is a lot of demand. More than their manufacturing can keep up with. Sales will pick up soon because they'll have more consoles to sell.

Well in my little town lots of people don't even want one[PS3] now. Considering there are none, they all want a Wii. Or a 360. But yes worldwide the demand is very high indeed. And obviously very inelastic. =P

The dreamcast had some pretty great arcade game ports thus making it winar. Some nice original titles too.

Of course that's all according to my tastes so yar.

PS3's powerful and all, and no doubt it'll sell big to the casual crowd..

Sony's still not getting my $600 though. Wheres all the new and innovative titles? It'd be nice for a breath of fresh air now and then... Devil may cry 23 SE version A? World War 2 shooter EIGHT MILLION, GENERIC SPORTS TITLES 2007.

It's like I'm breathing the same dirty air.

Only it's colored pink and makes flowers grow!

I see far more people saying "I want to see Sony fail." than I do Sony fans. When I think rabid blind-hating console fan, I think X360, really. the LAST thing I think when I hear "PS3" is a monopoly and huge crowd of Sony lovers. Seriously, look at all eight pages of this very topic - It's nothing but an overwhelming amount of "I want to see Sony fail." with a few people that are cautiously optimistic.

There's serious complains about Sony and about the PS3, but a monopoly is NOT one of them.

The real reason everyone hears nothing but bad for the PS3 is because that's all that's ever reported. I looked; there is good news around for the PS3. Good luck finding it without some serious digging.

And no, this good news did not come from Sony themselves. I take good news about Sony from Sony about as seriously as I take bad news about the PS3 from gonintendo.com.

Heh I like that last bit. lol Anywho, let's all face it...Sony will regroup and by 2009(The year I plan on getting my PS3 coincidently) they will be rising to the top if not already there. It'll only take some time. Besides I know Sony has some good stuff going for them. And by this time next year I expect some really good stuff from them. Hopefully they'll send some more machines to my local Bestbuy, Wal-Mart, Gamestop and wherever else might have PS3 displays, because everytime(except once) I walk by one it's frozen.

I played a bit of Resistance multi-player on my friend's ops3 and hi-def TV Friday.
It was remarkably underwhelming. The graphics (And I know it's a first-gen game, so I shouldn't be expecting euphoria) weren't near as good as they were worked up to be. I now agree with anyone that says GoW looks better. And the gameplay (I didn't play isnlge player, mind you) was the same s**t we loved since Goldeneye.

And the controller's too light. I don't miss rumble, since all contorllers I have either have broken or no rumble, but it's just too damned light.

an interesting observation. My local Walmart has had the same PS3 in the case for a week, but the newly restocked 360 section is down to the last Green box. a few Core 360s still around though

-239076.php]PAL PS3 Backwards Compatability Gimped

Quote:

Apparantly David Reeves of SCEE says this about the soon-to-be-released PAL PS3:

"The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models."

Oh nos. What, a four month delay has led to things on the PAL PS3 being worse than the NTSC version? HOW, SONY?

"Software will take over some of the functionality that was originally taken care of by dedicated chips, which means far fewer PlayStation 2 (PS2) games can be played on a European PS3 compared with the Japanese and American PS3 models which play 98 percent of old games."

That's from a "Sony statement" regarding the gimping.

This info is turning up on proper news sites, including the Washington Post and Yahoo News. Problem is, it smells like complete BS. I mean, come on.

"Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3."

This is just too much of a kick in the nuts to be credible. Insert random conspiracy theories below if you wish, but unless Sony have fed themselves royally, this just seems too wild to be true.

We'll still check with Sony to get this confirmed. Just in case. Stay tuned. Luke Plunkett

[UPDATE] - OK, this....this might be for realz. Wow. Just got a press release from SCEE, and it says:

"The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engine, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS wireless controller. It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation2 (PS2) titles."

Hoo-boy. Guess we won't know for sure how royally PAL gamers have been fed until after the list of PS2 titles is actually released, but that word "limited" doesn't look very encouraging. Just...wow.

Full press release after the jump.

23/02/2007 10:00
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Announces Hardware Specification of PLAYSTATION3 for Europe

London, 23 February 2007 - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today announced that PLAYSTATION3 (PS3) to be launched in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Australasia on 23rd March 2007 would utilise a new hardware specification.

The European PS3 will feature the Cell Broadband Engine, 60 GB hard disc drive, Blu-ray Disc player, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS wireless controller. It also embodies a new combination of hardware and software emulation which will enable PS3 to be compatible with a broad range of original PlayStation (PS) titles and a limited range of PlayStation2 (PS2) titles.

"PS3 is first and foremost a system that excels in playing games specifically designed to exploit the power and potential of the PS3 system," said David Reeves, President of SCEE. "Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology."

Some additional PS2 titles will become compatible on the PS3 system through regular downloadable firmware updates, which will be made available through the PLAYSTATIONNetwork, from http://www.playstation.com or via PS3 game discs, with the first update planned for the launch date of the 23rd March 2007.

Users will be able to check whether their titles are compatible with PS3 at http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc. This site will be available on 23rd March to meet launch day.

1. A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch is required to output 7.1 ch audio, supported by Dolby TrueHD or a similar format, from the HDMI OUT connector.

2. This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel.

3. Usability of all storage media types is not guaranteed.

4. Certain PlayStation 2 format software titles may not perform properly on this system. Visit faq.eu.playstation.com/bc for the latest information regarding compatible titles

Wow.

I'm sorry, but how is Sony screwing up so badly?

Holy crap.

Like it said in the article, how is it we can suffer a four month delay and get a worse deal?

Well, considering with exchange rates and all we're paying more per console, I use the term 'worse' subjectively.

The good news is, I don't find backwards compatibility a major selling point in consoles, seeing as I already have a PS2 anyway.

The bad news (for Sony at least is), neither am I intrested in anything else Sony has to offer me at this moment in time. This is just icing on the cake.

Ok, I say this with a straight face and no irony "there goes my biggest reason to get a PS3"

My PS2 is breaking apart, very literally from me removing the face plate to disc swap, it's heavily effecting my games and I thought that with the PS3 coming so soon in the future, is it even worth replacing the PS2.

Apparently, the answer is "Yes".

Wow, just wow! Now, I'm not from Europe but I am upset for our European friends. I can't believe Sony is this stupid; are they just trying to lose the console war or what.

I mean how many people in Europe, or anywhere else for that matter, are/were thinking about getting the PS3 not only for the future games but also the classics from the PS1-2 that they may have missed from not having any of the previous consoles. Did Sony just now nail their coffin?

Oh, trust me, anyone who would possibly buy a PS3 already has a PS2. It's about the only console that EVERYONE has.

The "nail in the coffin" for Sony is that HMV, the biggest high-street retailer of new consoles only allow you to pre-order a PS3 if you get a PSP with it, meaning to buy a PS3 on launch date from the retailer who will have the most in stock, you must part with 640.

Alas, many will see that as an investment, buy it and Ebay it.

I know that you have a point about how most of the Internet seems to be in some kind of anti-Sony craze and some of the claims against them are nonsense, but how can you blame this on PAL? Why does PAL force them to make the compatibility worse and raise the price by a huge amount?

Quote:

My main reason to consider a PS3 is backwards compatibility, and with every news release I consider it more likely that I will just get a PS2 some time when it's realy, really cheap. However, this doesn't just affect Europeans because if it bombs in Europe that will affect 3rd party support.

Well, unless I'm not understanding what you're on about right, this seems to say otherwise.

Also lol @ that page. Due to the high demand for PlayStation 3, availability of the console is very limited. Despite the fact that most sites have had them available to pre-order for...what, at least a fortnight now and still available?

HMV's online store is now taking pre-orders for PlayStation 3 - providing consumers are also willing to purchase a 4GB PSP pack for a total price of GBP 675.

An email sent out to customers today says the deal will enable them to become one of the "lucky few" who will be able to pick up a PS3 at launch. It reads: "At HMV.co.uk, we've been working with Sony to offer up to 5000 customers an incredible deal when you buy the new Sony 4GB PSP.

"Anyone who takes advantage of this offer will get priority over other HMV.co.uk customers for the PlayStation 3." The deal also includes two PSP games - Killzone Liberation and Gangs of London - and the price for the bundle is listed as GBP 674.99.

According to the terms and conditions of the promotion, all consumers who buy the bundle "will take precedence over any other online HMV customers".

Seems they've dropped it from being mandatory and relegated to "ok, you can order the cheap one, but you wont GET it."

Me and my dad saw this advert earlier. My dad was like "wtf was that about?" I only knew myself because I saw that article beforehand and because of the 'this is living' tagline at the end.

I honestly can't see how this advertises the PS3. Heck, it doesn't even advertise its tagline very well. Are exploding plant pots full of money something that happens in your daily life?

For the record, the version I saw didn't have "A Playstation 3 production" tagged on the end, if you're wondering how we didn't know what it was about.

Devil May Cry 4 goes multiplatform.

Quote:

Capcom have just announced that Devil May Cry 4 is no longer a PS3 exclusive. Not only is there a 360 version in the works, but it's coming to PC as well. Capcom's Mark Beaumont:

Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible, and has been building its technology base to meet that goal. This announcement means that PS3, Xbox 360 and PC owners worldwide will be able to experience the latest installment of one of Capcom's pillar franchises.

The 360 version will ship alongside the PS3 one, with the PC version coming a little later.

Big news? Certainly. Unexpected? Hardly.

CAPCOM'S DEVIL MAY CRY 4 EXPLODING ONTO MULTIPLE PLATFORMS
The Next Generation of Capcom's Smash Hit Action Franchise Comes to Next Generation Systems, PC

SAN MATEO, Calif -- March 19, 2007 -- Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that the highly anticipated Devil May Cry 4, already in development for Sony Computer Entertainment's PLAYSTATION3 (PS3), is now also in development for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and for PC. "Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible, and has been building its technology base to meet that goal," said Mark Beaumont, executive vice president, officer and head of Capcom consumer software publishing in the Americas and Europe. Not likely. Kojima is notorious for disliking ports (what with the Metal Gear 1 & 2 debacle, not to mention the MGS2 Substance Xbox port fiasco), and I'm pretty sure that Konami in its current state isn't going to risk pissing off the only guy making good games for them. If Kojima doesn't give it a go, there will be no port.

Shame to see Devil May Cry 4 go, but Sony's prolly getting upgraded versions of Lost Planet and Dead Rising to compensate (hopefully HEAVILY upgraded, since both games are 'okay' at best). I think the time of third-party exclusives is drawing to a close, and in an era where only the first-party games are exclusive, Sony's got a fighting chance (Halo, Forza and Crimson Skies vs Ratchet & Clank, Jak, God of War and Gran Turismo).
