I got the following for Christmas.

-Pretty silver compact PS2.
-Guitar Hero
-Guitar Hero II
-MGS3: Subsistence
-Kingdom Hearts II
-Sonic Mega Collection Plus.

I *did* want Kingdom Hearts 1 first, having never played the series, but my mom couldn't tell if it was 1 or 2.

I didn't have the heart to tell her that I already owned everything on Sonic Mega Collection Plus that I wanted via emulation, so I'm not going to say anything about it.

Anyways, the point of the thread is, I have about 125 dollars - 50 of which is in Best Buy gift cards - to spend on my new PS2. I need some ideas on games that I've been missing out on all these years, namely what people consider the "get a PS2 for these games" games. Any help is appreciated. kthxbai <3

Get both Katamari Damacy games if you find both. I highly reconmend it. Also, look into getting Shadow of the Colossus, and highly atmosperic game with huuuuuuge boss fights. Oh and get Okami as I found it to be more awesome than LoZ:Wind Waker and my personaly game of the year.

Oh and Toys R Us has an awesome sale on PS2 games. The asterixed ones are the games, you probably should look into

If you're into fantasy mech combat, you gotta pick up Armore Core Nexus. Should be under $40 or even $30 by now. If you're into street racing Midnight Club 3 Dub Editon Remix is a good pick. Only $20. Then for the fighter in all of us...Street Fighter Alpha Anthology sounds pretty good. Hope that helps.

Armored Core = WIN

Particularly Armored Core 3, Silent Line, and Nexus. Last Raven might be good are well, although it's a bit harder and probably isn't the best place to start if you're new to the series.

If you like somewhat more realistic racing, Gran Turismo 3 and 4 (particularly 4) are good. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit II, while a bit older, is still pretty darn good, and it's actually considerably better on the PS2 than the other systems it was released for. And if you haven't played them already on other systems, Star Wars Battlefront I and II are both pretty good (although the Xbox versions are a little better).

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
Burnout Revenge
Any of the Ratchet and Clanks

Also from that list Ashide put up I'd also think about Outrun C2C and Tomb Raider Legend. Only heard positive things about them.

Like John just said; Ratchet and Clank games are pretty fun. i haven't played one personally, but the Jak games are said to be really good.

Ace Combat Four: Shattered Skies
Ace Combat Five: The Unsung War
Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

In that order. In terms of plot, 4 is by far my favorite; but in terms of enjoyability, gameplay, and overall entertainment value, you can't pass up Zero. Of course, all three are amazingly fun games, else I wouldn't reccomend them to people that aren't into flight sims <3 It's more of an arcade game than a serious sim, as 60 missles on a plane will tell you.

Also, the SOCOM series is pretty fun. You're into fighting games, so Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, and I believe there's a Guilty Gear collection for it as well.

But if I had to name any single game; I'd say definately rent or buy Ace Combat Zero. If you like the gameplay, you aren't alowed to pass up Four (If you're intolerant of dated graphics after playing a more new game, play Four first. But dated graphics don't bug me that much.)

There have been 3 threads like this on another message board in the last week.
Hmmm..
Anyway, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are easily the best games on PS2. I'd also recommend Rez (If you can find it), Beyond Good and Evil, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Shadow Hearts 1 and 2, Devil May Cry 1 and 3, Gradius 5, We Love Katamari, Resident Evil 4 (if you lack it for Gamecube), Dragon Quest 8.
I hear FFXII, Okami and God Hand are really good, too.

I second all of that. <3 (aside from Shadow of the Colossus because I've never played it)

Hm. Out of all that you suggesting, DMC1/2/3, Okami, MAYBE Katamari, and Shadow of the Colossus sound the most interesting. But I have to ask.

If I've played and beat the GC version of RE4 a few times and unlocked everything on it, is the extra content of the PS2 version worth getting it for? I heard the Seperate Ways thing is really long.

Final Fantasy XII.

FINAL.
FANTASY.
TWELVE.

Got it?

Also, Rez is hard as hell to find, ut your life isn't complete until you've played it. Seriously.

Please note that NO ONE, is suggesting Devil May Cry 2. Get 1. Get 3. But for the love of Pete, avoid 2. There's no need to waste your money. The combat is no where near the sexyness that is 1 and 3s. There is no story important to the storyline. And you even get the token female character to play as. :/

So, unless you play 1 and 3 and then decide "ZOMG I R NOW TEH DANTE FANBOI I MUST HAEV DEM ALLS LOLOLOL" ...like me..., then don't bother with 2.

On the original topic, I reccomend the Shin Megami Tensei games, which are Nocturne/Lucifers Call (Different names for NTSC/PAL regions respectively), and the Digital Devil Saga series (There's 2 of them). Get DDS if you like your RPGs more traditional (Final Fantasy and the like), get Nocturne if you want to try something that will REALLY challenge you if you just charge in un-prepared.

Rent Onimusha 2. I haven't played the third one, but I really liked it, all problems with it aside.

If you haven't played the Xbox version, you must rent Black. Black is one of the most fun games I've played in a long, long time.

I still have an XBox, you know, and ANY multiplatform games I get are going to be for XBox. Because they're always better on the XBox. No PS2 Black for me =O

Played Onimusha 2 before, and hated it. But I love Onimusha 1... but I can get that for XBox.

Ah, in that case, definitely don't bother with the PS2 versions of Star Wars Battlefront...

As far as PS2 games go, one other thing to occur to me, if you like any of the Mega Man games much, the Mega Man X Collection and X8 might be worth picking up. For the classic series there's also the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, but I think they released that for the Xbox at some point as well.

It's 1 and 3 that are hard. 2 involves spamming E&I (Your handguns) and that's it. |I

Seriously. The whole game can be beat by simply spamming the long range weapons.

Isn't that what you're supposed to do on that Heaven or Hell mode on 3? I mean, if everything dies in one hit, if the handguns still shoot about the same as they did in that DMC1 demo I played, it sounds like it'd be a breeze.

Which version of the Mega Man collection games are better? GC or PS2?

Classic or X series? With the Anniversary Collection (classic series) they reversed the controls on the GC for some unknown reason. (A to shoot, B to jump, and no way to change it) Things work as you'd expect (X to jump, square to shoot) on the PS2 version. As far as I know the games themselves are pretty much the same (the PS2 version might have more of the optional remixed music, but I forget), so it mostly depends on what control scheme you want. For reference, as far as I know the Xbox version has all the features of the other two along with customizable controls.

As for the X collection, the GC version has a few more slight sound issues than the PS2, but otherwise they seem to be pretty much identical.

Yes, but that's a bonus difficulty that you get AFTER completing everything else. Besides, various environmental hazards (Leviathans stomach acid for example. >>), don't make it as easy as it sounds.

Just ordered Freak Out (Stretch Panic in the US) for myself, on the premise that it's meant to be just a little bit unusual. How many games can you name where you play a demonic scarf?
