Miyamoto Could Have Made Halo
He just didn't feel like it.
by Daemon HatfieldUS, May 7, 2007 - Shigeru Miyamoto, the famed Nintendo game designer who was recently picked as one of Time's 100 most-influential people, says he could have made Halo, had he wanted to. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Miyamoto reveals that he is not interested in making the games people want -- he's trying to make the games people don't even know they want yet.
"I could make Halo," Miyamoto says. "It's not that I couldn't design that game. It's just that I choose not to. One thing about my game design is that I never try to look for what people want and then try to make that game design. I always try to create new experiences that are fun to play."
The designer also shares his unique approach to market research. Instead of focus groups and demographic analysis, he watches the expression on a gamer's face while his game is being played. "When I show a game to people I don't ask their opinion or give them a survey. I just watch their eyes and their face while they play. Do they smile? Do they look frustrated? So I guess I do test my games -- but it isn't very scientific."
Sometimes his sense of what gamers want to play isn't 100% accurate, as the disappointing sales of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in Japan show. Miyamoto believes the audience for an epic, hardcore adventure game is shrinking, which could mean we can expect more casual games from Nintendo. The designer says Twilight Princess is selling "okay" in the U.S.
Further proof that Miyamoto, while perhaps one of the greatest creative minds in the entertainment business of the last several decades, is a six-years-old boy.
Shiggy, don't just start spouting random garbage! That's Sony's job right now! =P
jealoussssss
Would Halo have taken off without the online multiplayer? Probably not, and that feature would undoubtedly have been left out had Miyamoto been in charge of it. Halo is the console equivalent of Counter-Strike. Ain't nobody buying it for the dull, pedantic, repetitive singleplayer component (at least, I hope not).
Halo 1 on the Xbox doesn't have online multiplayer support...
It doesn't? That's news to me, seriously. I thought it did. o.o
From what I remember, Xbox Live didn't go live until February 2003.
Edit: According to Wikipedia it was released November 2002 although I'm guessing that was North America rather than Europe, which I'm sure was the following February.

Well not online. But LAN, yes. Regardless it was basically the main event where that game was concerned, and even more so for the sequel.

One final question: last week, Shigeru Miyamoto said in an interview with Geoff Keighley in Entertainment Weekly that he could make Halo.
Yeah, well. I just want to go on the record and say that Bungie is hard at work on a side-scrolling platform game featuring some plumbers -- I'm not going to say what their ethnicity is, it's none of anyone's business -- but we took that as a gauntlet, a sort of glove slap, and we're going to respond in 2D scrolling style. That's all I'm saying.
That made me laugh.
I lol'd as well. heheh.
Those guys at Bungie have always been hilarious.
This is from the guy who bashed DKC and complained about Paper Mario 2.
I respect the guy as a game designer but he's so damn immature for someone his age.

To be fair it was kind of a bad game.
The graphics were "amazing", but DKC isn't that great of a game.
I'm guessing his point got lost some where in the translation... And good for Bungie for playing it off like nothing. We don't need this blowing out of proportion.

*shrivels into a prune*
Hahaha yea this is good that they didn't respond aggressively. This gives video game designers a good name. Humorous and laid back. The people of the new generation. =) I like.

The fact that Hiro of all people said that made me laugh my head off.
But I agree nonetheless. Just let the guy be jealous and/or misquoted and/or misunderstood and/or quirky.
