The somewhat new MMO by SEGA and Three Ring, Spiral Knights, is now available for play. Several of those in the chat, including Srol, Terg, JC, Shy, and myself have already joined. Discuss.

I just downloaded and started playing. It's pretty cool. Are there any "non-member" limitations? Such as, paying for subscriptions etc.? Or is it an entirely free game? Also, if you have a pair of "Chromadepth HD" glasses, the game looks absolutely stunning in 3D. And all you have to do is get a pair of the Chromadepth HD glasses, you don't have to have a special device, which might sound hard to believe. Just get a pair (5 to 7 dollars) off the net, and the game, along with most other 2D surfaces, will be realistically 3D.

it just requires you to have decent internet speed i'm sure your computer can run it dear.

and my opinion on it is: its sucks!
what the hell is it a zelda copy, no thank you i did not enjoy it one bit. i hate the downloading time, the characters and the pointless gameplay. if it had puzzles or fun actions other than hack and slash i'd find it fun. for me this game scored

4/10

It is an entirely free game - if you're patient. And one amazing thing about the game is that your progression rate is tied directly to your equipment; better equipment allows you to go further into dungeons. So you don't have to worry about leveling your character up, or spending tons of moola on skill points; it's all about the crafting system or buying from vendors.

The only thing that you can pay real money for, is Crystal Energy, which can be used to buy some items that give you more weapon slots, or access to trinket slots, and of course can be used to let you play in more dungeons past your limit of 100 Mist Energy (the kind of Energy that is completely free and regenerates fully in a 24-hour period of time). But, you CAN buy approximately 100 Crystal Energy for around 3000 crowns (in-game money), so there are ways to get around the real money issue if you're willing to spend a lot of time gathering money.

Unfortunately, I'll admit that I really would like to play more often, but I'm not willing to spend any real money on Crystal Energy, so I have to wait until I recover enough Mist Energy to play for any length of time. I also cannot craft an item that is more than three stars in value, as you need more than 100 energy for anything above three stars, and you can't have that unless you get Crystal Energy. I also don't have enough game funds to buy CE on my own yet, so I'm just playing the game as I can.

The gameplay is somewhat simplistic - you run through dungeons, solve very simple puzzles, mine a resource on every floor if you can find the crystals to mine, and fight monsters to level up your equipment. It reminds me a bit of Bomberman in the general design of the characters, and with one of the three primary weapon types being bombs, it is hard not to see the resemblance. (there are also swords and guns available).

I love games that have a sense of progression through getting cooler gear, so this is very attractive to me. I just wish I could play longer without needing to wait for an arbitrary energy limit, but I understand the mechanic of it. They've done a marvelous job programming it in such a simple format; it was easy to download. Just don't expect much depth to gameplay or story, this is primarily instance-based action.

I'ma let you finish porting posts over Acrio, really I will.

But for now, there's been a big update for Spiral Knights. Good news is, recipes that are worth three to five stars are considerably cheaper to acquire, there's a new auction house for selling stuff more easily, and even a new training center for newbies.

Bad news is, they not only upped the ENERGY price of crafting (800 energy to craft a five-star piece of equipment!), they also went ahead and made a number of changes to the way dungeons work. Before the update, lots of people were selling "ports" to specific levels either to give people access to high-grade recipes, or to bosses, thus bypassing the need to go through the effort of delving through the dungeons to get to said areas. Now they've fixed it so that you don't get as many boss tokens, or maybe none at all, if you port to the dungeon; and you have to go through a few dungeon levels before you were eligible for recipes from the mid-level shops. Oh, and about crafting - if a weapon is bound to you, then you use it to craft with, then you end up with the new item...that is also bound to you. So essentially you can no longer make any more four- or five-star gear for anyone else, since you have to equip and level up the gear necessary to make those, and equipping an item automatically binds it to you. In other words you HAVE to craft it yourself.

There's a lot to the update, which should be looked at here - http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/8522. Personally, I recommend that everyone's first priority be buying up as much crystal energy as you can, since I imagine the price of that is going to skyrocket very soon with the increased energy requirements for crafting. That said, the auction house does look like a good way to put out your extra rare materials that you don't see yourself using anytime soon.

EDIT: Also, sometime we'll need to organize when everyone here who plays it can play it all together. While it's more efficient to get cash and mats by delving into dungeons alone, it's also pretty repetitive and kinda dangerous in some of the lower levels, even with decent gear.

I currently have three-star armor, shield and helm, while I have a four-star sword and gun. It should be easier to acquire recipes from now on, but it also will be harder to craft them since you have to pay more for the energy cost. They really want you to pay real money to buy crystal energy.

^Agrees with Tergonaut 100%

I just started playing yesterday, and I have to say, I fully embrace the limitation via Energy, otherwise, I wouldn't get anything productive done. I absolutely love the character designs, and the gameplay is great for something that you can pick up and play. For a browser based game that doesn't have a subscription, I'm totally on board.
