You know the rules, but in case you don't: Each time you post, you must hurt one game and heal one game. You do this by lowering and raising the quantities, respectively. When a game reaches 0, it is eliminated. Last game remaining is the winner.

Some guidelines:

1) Clearly announce the game you are hurting and the game you are healing.
2) DO NOT double post.
3) DO NOT post in the topic until at least one hour has passed since your last post, regardless of how many posts have occurred during the interim.
4) After you post, check to ensure that nobody beat you to it. If someone did, then please edit your post accordingly.
5) Please rearrange the items in the list so tat the "healthiest" are on top, and the "hurtiest" on the bottom.

THE LIST:

The Legend of Zelda - 10
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - 10
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 10
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - 10
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 10

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - 10
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures - 10

Heal TLoZ:LA, hurt Z2:AoL. Why? Because Link's Awakening is still my favorite Zelda, and I really can't get into Zelda II. No more, no less.

Can't believe someone would hurt the Wind Waker! How could you! It's so cuuuute! I'm healing that one because I think it did a lot of new stuff in the franchise, and had the most believable Ganon. I'm hurting Four Swords for being a pointless useless game.

Healing Zelda II, because it's still my favorite 2D Zelda by far, and I doubt anyone else will do anything for it. :p And I'll add to the Four Swords hurting, just because it doesn't look interesting to me in the slightest.

Wind Waker is the worst Zelda (I've played), which isn't saying much. Link's Awakening is the Grand High Master of Pwnage. Took me one-and-a-half years to do the first dungeon, and even then I cheated to do it. (I was 10, shut up. :P)

Wind Waker was the first (and as of now only) Zelda game to offer a morality outside of good versus evil. I actually found myself agreeing with Ganon frequently. Link's Awakening was just a dull side quest with poor graphics and sound. I'm sorry, I just don't like the gameboy Zelda's. I'm just singling out Link's Awakening because there's no way i deserves to be that high.

Also, it appears Velotix missed Zerosky's post, so I'm updating to take it into account.

Same as before, Heal LA, hurt Z2.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (DX) - 15
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 11
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 11

The Legend of Zelda (NES) - 9
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages - 9
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons - 9
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - 8
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords - 6

I suppose I can empathize a little with the LA haters, but I'm actually pretty excited with LA being so high - I'd always thought of it as my favorite Zelda (OoT being right behind), and this just goes to show that I'm not alone. Snubbing that "anyone who favors 2D Zeldas automatically likes LttP best" train of thought right in the nose - I like LttP, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't have the nostalgic appeal to me that LA does. Prolly because I played LA first (DX version, at that).

BTW we're missing the CD-i Zeldas. That would've made the start-up much smoother, methinks.

*throws rocks at all you Zelda II haters*

And I'm attacking LA, not because I have any major problem with it (although I've never gotten around to finishing it, I thought it was pretty good from what I played), but because I don't know if it's good enough to be that high up, and because there's seeming to be a trend where LA fans are picking on Zelda II. :p

With good reason: it sucks. It's nothing like the other Zelda games, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, until you factor in:

* Tedious level-grinding
* A "lives" system that dictates that, should you kick the bucket, you have to walk back to where you were from square one
* Insane difficulty (including both combat, which is a pain with your extremely limited range, and puzzles that are quite inane at best)

All adding up to my never being able to keep interest in it for long, let alone EVER seeing Castle #2 (like I can even figure out where it is). Sucks. Sucks. Sucks. I'm amazed ANYONE can like it.

With good reason: it sucks. It's nothing like the other Zelda games, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, until you factor in:

* Tedious level-grinding

You blaspheme, sir! That's still one of my favorite games, and definitely my favorite of the 2D games. (I'd take it in a second over Zelda I) I don't remember the level-grinding being all that tedious, and I kind of liked the RPG-ish system to some of it. The lives system doesn't seem that much different than other Zelda games where you get dumped back at the last place they let you save at before you kicked off. In this one you get the benefit of getting a couple more tries before sending back. You do get sent back a bit further, but it's not that bad.

And the combat system? I thought it was great, actually! That's one of my favorite things about it, as there was much more strategy involved than the other 2D games (and the range never bothered me). It always slightly reminded me of OoT in 2D for some reason. With the other games, you basically approach your enemy, flail wildly, and run for your life if they attack you. In Zelda II, there's a lot more depth to it, as far as whether you attack high or low, or from above or below later on once you aquire the down and upward thrust attacks (downward thrust is awesome). To say nothing of battling enemies with shields, that are smart enough to try to block your different attacks. Then there's also the use of your own shield, which involves more than just standing there and not attacking, as in other games. You have to actually make a point of defending yourself from different attacks depending on if they are high or low, and usually pretty quickly since the enemy will likely try both.

Basically I find Zelda II's combat system much more involved and fun than other 2D Zeldas. The other style can be nice as well, but I find that it gets a little dull for me after a while some times, especially in the first game. It's one of the reasons why I've never gotten around to doing anything past the first dungeon in Zelda I, I usually put the game in, mess with it for a few minutes, get bored and switch to something else.

As far as the difficulty, yeah it's hard, but that makes it interesting! It's not too bad, and I like the challenge. I also like the whole 2D side-scroller thing, with jumping being required, it makes it all more interesting to me than the top-down stuff.

Oh, and Palace II is not hard to find. :p

Funny, I'd take Zelda 1 over Zelda 2 - and I don't even like Zelda 1 all that much (seriously, I don't think the series really hit its stride until LttP).

Quote:

It is. Really, REALLY tedious. "Kill 100 enemies without dying - then do it AGAIN from square 1! Then AGAIN and AGAIN!" It'd have been mitigated somewhat if your EXP was saved whenever you, ya know, saved.

Quote:

and I kind of liked the RPG-ish system to some of it.

Some aspects were okay, I suppose, but I REALLY prefer the simpler systems earlier and later Zelda games put forth.

Quote:

The lives system doesn't seem that much different than other Zelda games where you get dumped back at the last place they let you save at before you kicked off.

Yes, but see, in most of the Zelda games I've played, that's literally what happens: you get dropped back off where you last saved. In the NES games, you get dropped off from a designated "Start Point" no matter WHAT you'd prefer. In all honesty, it's a pain in the ass. Of course, this is less a beef with Zelda 2 than with NES games in general (Zelda is guilty of it, Metroid is guilty of it...), but regardless, it's applicable.

Quote:

In this one you get the benefit of getting a couple more tries before sending back. You do get sent back a bit further, but it's not that bad.

I'll concede I never found the second dungeon to dictate whether it's "not that bad" or not... but it was annoying enough regardless, and I've gotten far enough in similar NES titles to know that yes, it was annoying as hell. Guess I'm spoiled, seeing as I most became intimate with most of these series from later entries.

Quote:

I'll also concede that there is a large amount of strategy in the game, but really, the range kills it. That sword's just too darned short, so to attack anyone, you really really have to be risking getting hurt to do much attacking - either by touching the enemy, or from the fact that you're withing striking distance from the enemy.

Quote:

Well, first off, LA had a dedicated "shield" button (or rather, it had two buttons, one of which could be dedicated to the sheild), so you didn't have to do so much "run[ning] for your life if they attack you" - you just flip it out, and deflect the attack. You know, like OoT? Hold the "shield" button (which, in that, really IS dedicated) and deflect away. Secondly, fine, so you don't have the excessive information coming at you like you do in Zelda 2, but I prefer it that way - battles are considerably much more simple, so when I confront an enemy, I can get it over and done with quickly, instead of engaging in battles akin to a philosophical debate, where one false move really screws you up. ("Oh, this monster has his shield up high, so I should attack low - no, wait, his sword is up high, I should deflect! Deflect! Crud, not fast enough, I got hit. Let's try it again... Damn, same thing!" - It's been a while, so this is most likely not exact, but I distinctly remember enemies in the first dungeon who'd give me this exact problem. MANY enemies of this sort. It's a wonder I even made it THAT far.)

I wouldn't mind it so much if I could, you know, HEAL, instead of running around to a town every time I'm out of health, or diving for a fairy pool inside a dungeon - which heals you but once, despite me needing it several times.

I dunno, Zelda 1 I was at least willing to stick with until I made it to Ganon's lair, although it was a pain in the ass (and, to be blunt, NOT the series' finest hour). Zelda 2 overwhelms me with all sorts of differences and flaws that I apparently can't be bothered to get much further than Dungeon 1 - essentially, your case, but reversed.

I'll concede that I like the concept. Just... improve the swordplay, make the thing just a TAD more forgiving, and ditch the stupid "level-up" thing that the series never needed (and never really used since), and I'll probably like it more. I remember a fangame that took a similar approach - it was only a tech demo, of course, but it's proof that the concept has merit. I just don't think Zelda 2 is the proper realization of the concept.

I'm getting my desparate futile healing for Zelda II in while I have the chance, and I'll edit in my response to stuff in a minute. :p

Also looks like Pachamac and tornadot posted and the same time, so I took that into account with this post. tornadot's post confused me though, sounded like you were talking about hurting Four Swords, but the hurt went to Zelda II. :|

I'm generally kidding when I make comments about people blaspheming. :p

I will admit that it's annoying that your EXP isn't saved, but when you get further into the game leveling up isn't really that bad. The experience points you get increases a decent amount as you fight tougher enemies, especially the majority of the enemies in the palaces. Not to mention how at the end of every palace you automatically get however many points are required to give you your next level up, which is awesome if you're quite a ways off from getting it normally. So as you progress through the game you'll start leveling up fairly fast without too much tediousness for the most part.

Quote:

I'll also concede that there is a large amount of strategy in the game, but really, the range kills it. That sword's just too darned short, so to attack anyone, you really really have to be risking getting hurt to do much attacking - either by touching the enemy, or from the fact that you're withing striking distance from the enemy.

I always saw that as part of the challenge, you have to be in range of your enemy's sword if you want them to be in range of your own, and it's up to you to properly defend yourself from their attacks. As far as being touched by the enemies, I usually don't have a problem with that.

Also, as mentioned with other things, some enemies get easier later in the game as you've leveled up, and in partiuclar, once you've learned the downward thrust attack. You can literally just bounce on many of the weaker enemies' heads to kill them with that attack. :D

Quote:

I have no problem with simple battles now and then, but I like the more detailed battles a lot because of the increased action and strategy required. That's part of why the system reminds me a little of OoT and TP, there's more involved with figuring out how to defeat your enemy than just flailing wildly.

As for enemies in the first palace, I can only remember two enemies that used shields to block your attacks, those being Stalfos and Ironknuckles (if I got the names right). The Stalfos are easy, as they never move their shield to block your lower attacks. All you have to do is duck and stab whenever they get close.

As for Ironknuckles, those can definitely be a bit tougher, (especially the pesky blue ones later in the game), as they move their shield a lot to block your attacks. But I've found that it's possible to do kind of a jumping stab attack that can usually make all but the blue ones pretty easy.

Quote:

You certainly can't heal as often as one would like in this game, which is one of the things that makes it a good deal hard than other Zelda games (where you can have more than enough fairies and potions and stuff with you for just about anything that comes your way). However, it is possible to heal yourself later in the game. I forget how far in, but in one of the towns you learn a healing spell that allows you to refill a good chunk of your life. As you increase your magic meter (amount of magic you have to use) and magic level (a higher level reduces the amount of magic needed to use a spell), you'll be able to heal yourself more often. The shield spell is also nice too (particularly in boss rooms), as it doesn't take much magic, and it cuts the damage you take in half.

I still think the level-up system was kinda cool, as it seemed to be an interest mix of action and RPG elements. But I do think it could've been tweaked a little at least, like allowing you to save your experience points.

Quote:

Yeah, I've gathered that I'm in the minority when it comes to this game, especially with the way I not only like it, but like it better than games like Zelda I and LttP. But it's still fun to make feeble attempts to defend it. :D And I find these discussions highly interesting to read, and to see the perspective from the other side (with more detail than the usual "Zelda II sucks").

I suppose part of my like for Zelda II comes from the fact that it was the first Zelda game I ever played, way back when I was a kid and didn't have the faintest idea what I was doing. And was young enough that the taunting silhouette of Ganon that appears and laughs at you when you die scared the crap out of me. :lol I was a little pansy. Now I just find it hilariously infuriating (and at times enough to make you want to chuck the controller through the TV when you get laughed at after dieing near the end of a late-game palace with 7500/8000 EXP. :p )
