Well, alright, it's a spin-off "spiritual sequel" game for the DS (entitled "Solarobo"), but I don't care. I've been waiting for this! Please, please, PLEAAAAAAAAAAAASE bring this to America!

Ah, about damn time it was announced. Tail Concerto had some control issues, but it was an excellent little 3D adventure/platformer when such things were so few and far between on the PSOne (only the Megaman Legend series comes to mind, in fact that one mech looks like the Gustaffe from Misadventures of Tron Bonne). And the dog/cat people dynamic was interesting.

Hm, I see the character designs have that distinct dot.hack influence to 'em now. Not a bad thing, but it's a far cry from the more contemporary costumes from the first game.

Still looking forward to this.

Hm, this thread hasn't been updated in a while... what does this new trailer tell us?

- Game title long since changed from Solarobo to Solatorobo: Sore Kara CODA e (roughly translated as And Then To CODA).

- Humans exist among the dog/cat peoples, and one of them looks suspiciously like Damon Gant!

- Apparently the main character's powered up form makes him look human too... interesting.

- Comes out in Japan at the end of October.

- Although not shown in the trailer, I've seen a screenshot of the game that appears to confirm Waffle will appear in some form, possibly related to the optional quests you can download over Wi-Fi. Can't seem to locate that shot, though...

Still no news on a possible localization, although as I understand it the game WAS shown off at some French (or was it German?) game expo several weeks back. Not sure if Namco-Bandai's going to come through for us westerners, but there's always the faint hope that Atlus might give it a shot (they localized Tail Concerto when no one else would).

FAKE EDIT: Here's all the info pertaining to this game and its cast, translated and collected from the official website. Also more info on the cameos and how they work. And only now I realize who the character designer is for this: Nobuteru YUUKI. His Chrono Cross related artwork was good stuff.

I know it is a relatively unknown game over these shores, but I will be VASTLY disappointed if they don't bring it over to the US.

I am digging the background artwork in the trailer - very Miyazaki, although the inclusion of humans (or human-like characters) is the only disappointment for me. I was hoping they keep it strictly within the fantastical world of the dog and cat people.

Well, they appear to be treating the humans like they're a rarity... it'll be funny if they're the Little Bronx version of vampires: former dog/cat people transformed into "supernatural" creatures by some curse or disease. Looks like Red Savarin's already "infected", if that were to be the case... and he's looking for a cure?

Hey, this stuff writes itself!

That's my initial theory, too. Humans = rare. I'm still a rad reluctant, but still damn excited for this game.

Oh so Namco is behind this...oi, because this game looks pretty interesting. Guess if it doesn't get localized here, you could still import and read a fan translation. So the closest comparison to this game is perhaps Megaman Legends, right? Or is there another game that is also pretty similar to this? This is the first I've even heard of Tails Concerto.

It's pretty much like MML or more precisely MOTB's Gustaffe missions except all the emphasis is on grabbing, catching and throwing enemies/projectiles, rather than firing an arm cannon, as your main offense. In Tail Concerto, Waffle also had a "Bubble Blaster" he used to stop and catch the mischievous kittens of the Black Cats Gang. There's also a fair bit of platforming to be done... I remember the portions where you had to island-hop using a jetpack particularly difficult (like I said before, controls were a little wack in some places). You also visit towns to talk to NPCs and suss out intel on your next objectives.

Tail Concerto early gameplay

(oh goddammit, I never realized until now that Waffle and Alicia's english VAs are the same as Kite and BlackRose's from dot.hack... mind blown)

This is the first time I've heard about either game, but I'm liking this world quickly from my first impression.  Not sure quite what it is, but maybe it's the depth of story in such a deceptively simple world.

Namco Bandai attacks agressively.

Solatorobo Challenges Guinness Record with Commercial Campaign

Namco Bandai plans to air over 100 commercials in eight hour period.
Posted Oct 14, 2010 at 01:15, By Anoop Gantayat

Want to see some footage of Tail Concerto spiritual sequel Solatorobo? I have a feeling you'll be able to get your fix by tuning into Tokyo MX TV on October 21.

Namco Bandai announced today a promotion that will see 100 different commercials for the game broadcast over an eight hour period on the station. The commercials will begin airing at 15:00 and will run through 23:00.

This is all part of an attempt at challenging a Guinness World Record. According to Namco Bandai, there's a record at hand for broadcasting 100 different commercials for the same product in 8 hours.

The theme of the commercials is an encyclopedia of Solatorobo information. The various spots introduce viewers to the various areas of the game. Main character Red is introduced in volume 3. Did you know that the entire game world takes place on a floating island below which lies a sea of killer plasma? You'll find this out in volume 12.

Namco Bandai has made the first 20 spots available for viewing at the official site. More commercials will be posted online later.

Solatorobo is set for October 28 release.

Nice stunt. But won't viewers get sick of it after awhile? At least they're short.

After taking a look at some playthroughs and cutscenes for Tail Concerto, I have to admit that the characters and story are extremely endearing.  It makes more sense to me now why this game has a cult following.

Though oddly enough, looking at the new character designs (particularly Red), now I feel like they should have stuck with the earlier style more, in ways.

In Japan, some kind of paradigm shift occurred within the character design community where simple and practical clothing designs gave way to over-the-top, impractical fashion statements. Granted, anything goes when it comes to fantasy worlds and their dress codes, but dayum... some of these artists are getting a little nuts with it. I'd cite examples, but I don't want to derail this thread. I trust you know what I'm talking about, though.

I will say, however, that the increased graphical outputs of each successive generation of game consoles has attributed to this shift in some ways.

Thought I should CP this:

Ok, I just got this today and played an hour or two.

WOW

The presentation in this game is amazing. Gorgeous mix of 2d art and 3d everywhere. Great use of the dual screens. And most of all the game runs at 60fps :O I didn't even know DS games COULD run at 60fps. I'm so used to 15-25fps 3d games like KH.

So yeah, it's the best looking game on DS for sure. After Naruto and this, CC2 are definitely graphical masters of the moment.

The game plays very well so far. Controls are smooth, combat is smooth (60fps really makes everything feel great!). The towns are awesome to run around. They're divided into many screens and each is quick to get around in and looks great artistically. The menus and presentation is just top-notch. Very easy to get sidequests and do them. The world map looks pretty huge, so it seems like there's going to be a lot of locations to explore. Robot upgrading is pretty easy. Writing is enjoyable.

I love CC2's .hack games, silent bomber, TC, but the first hour or so of this really feels like their most polished game yet. You can tell this is something they didn't just throw together for some cash, but instead because it's their 15th anniversary title, it's a title they put a lot of love into.

Only downside is the extreme use of furries. But once your past that, it seems off to a great start!

Man, now I REALLY want this to be localized. >:o

I find it a bit hilarious that the only detriment to the game so far is the "extreme use of furries."  It's like a disclaimer: "I'm not actually into furries, I just like the story and the gameplay, so I'm still cool."  Oh puh-leaze.

Other than that point, I think the review sounds promising.  As long as the controls are much tighter than Tail Concerto's, and it sounds like they are, then I'll definitely consider looking this up.

Made it halfway before I came to the realization that I could always import!

Also on that site: This is the attitude the devs were up against all these years.

During a CEDEC presentation, the Solartorobo development team said the proposal was thrown in the trash right in front of the CyberConnect2 staff.

I realize I could import as well...then I remember reading somewhere that the DSi is apparently region blocked as oppose to previous DS handhelds. ARGH, why did I get this thing?!

I think the region blocking os on DSi specdific games isn't it? Or the DSWare?

It is true that the game only has DSi enhancements.  That said, it's amazing the game is coming out after all.  The people in charge of approving stuff must be kind of stupid if they're letting this obvious "spiritual successor" get through where they were otherwise so unwilling to even consider the idea before.

Then again, maybe that's why the designs are so blatantly different from the original Tail Concerto.  The dev team had to make it look different.

Damn. Forgot about that! Yeah, if a game is "DSi enhanced" it means there's region locking in place... but I thought that was only when played on a DSi itself? If I were to import and stick it in my DS Lite, will I be locked out? FAKE EDIT: oops, never mind got my answer. Looks like I'm good to go. πŸ˜€

Since the odds are I won't be buying a DS Lite back (what's the point at this...well, point), somebody import the game and do a Let's Play. Pretty please.

Man, we're getting some love over here lately, Xenoblade and this so far, and if The Last Story has been announced for us then I'm unnaware.
