You know, this is looking pretty sweet, hope there are some gameplay innovations, though I haven't played any of the DS releases.

White & Black.

They fight crime.

(actually, I'm not sure which is which)

The boy has significantly more black in his design, and the girl has a lot of white, so maybe that's it.

Why give them "official" names if they are nothing but avatars that have no personality, have no direction or opinions of those actions, and all they say is "..." anyway when you play as them. You even have the option of giving them a completely different name. Then again, I don't see how Pokemon fans can think the protagonists have any "character" at all and rant and rave as if they have one to begin with.

Silly me. I'm just thinking outloud. :<

And I hope we get something other than slightly different camera angles, because otherwise it's Game Freak rereleasing the same game again but with different visuals. Here's hoping for some innovations.

why innovate when you could put out the same thing with only minute changes and still sell millions?

There's literally NO competition in this field, they really have no reason to continue pushing the envelope of game design when they can introduce new and mostly cosmetic features in one version, take them away in the follow-up version and then reintroduce it in the second follow-up to thundering applause. And this is exactly how the Japanese audience likes it. When Square-Enix announced that the 8th Dragon Quest title was going to be on the PS2 and have a fully modeled 3D world and battles, many Japanese fans FLIPPED THE $+%% OUT. Something to do with altering tradition, they said. They perceived change coming to their beloved RPG series and they were appalled. Thankfully, many were appeased by Level 5's work on the game and now they're pretty much okay with it....

... only to again FLIP THE $+%% OUT when Dragon Quest IX was first announced to be somewhat of an online multiplayer action RPG. This time the creators were spooked and decided to scale back their ambitions and put out a more traditional 'quest' game w/ turn-based battles and some online connectivity.

From a competitive battling point of view they did innovate quite a bit from one gen into the other.

In Gen 1 due to programming glitches and lack of decent ghost and bug-type moves Psychics dominated the scene.

In Gen 2 we had the Special stat split into Special Attack and Special Defense, meaning that Pokémon that used to have a great Special stat may now be stuck with "just" a high Special Defense and a low Special Attack. Moreover two new types were introduced, dark and steel, that served to balance the game and end the psychic supremacy. Gen 2 also introduced hold items, weather effects and breeding.

In Gen 3 abilities were introduced, making each Pokémon a bit more unique. The addition of natures allowed one to choose a certain Pokémon based on which stat they wanted to max out, furthermore the concept of IVs and EVs got an overhaul, the possible values differ from the previous gens and there is now a cap on EVs, meaning that a lot more fine-tuning is required when training your Pokémon for competitive battling.

I could train a Salamence with a +speed nature, 31 IV speed and max out the speed EVs. Other people might go for a +attack nature and spread out the EVs equally between attack, speed and HP.

Better hold items introduced; whereas gen 2´s best hold item was probably Leftovers, gen 3 introduced the first Choice item (Choice Band) and several stat-boosting berries.

Gen 4 had the physical-special split. As opposed to before when moves of a certain type (e.g. fire moves) were always either physical or special, now each single move is either physical or special (flamethrower is special, fire fang is physical), this allowed many Pokémon to expand their movepool. More choice items were added (Choice Specs, Choice Scarf).

Not to mention that with the introduction of more Pokémon and more moves the possible strategies increase with every generation. The "annoyer" tactic, very popular back in the G/S/C days, is pretty much gone now. In Gen 3 SkarmBliss was a popular way of walling all enemy attacks often ending in a stallfest, in gen 4 new ways of getting past these walls were possible, the gameplay is now almost dominated by sweepers (last time I checked).

Whats this about the Water starter having a penis on his chest?

It drank too much one night and the grass starter drew a penis on it's chest after it passed out.

The impression I got of the competitive battling scene is that it's dominated by stealth rock. Whole teams seem to be made up to set up/counter it. I think it needs to be toned down for B/W.

Hrmph, placing bets now on half the legendaries requiring events that'll most likely never come state-side, and if they do will only be in two or three cities that most players won't be able to get to.

Yes, I'm just slightly bitter about the utter lack of events for the tickets in Gen III. Thank God for Game Sharks and Action Replays.

Fraggin' Nintendo making it impossible for me to get Deoxys, Ho-oh, and Lugia legally.

And just how are they planning to top Arceus?  Create the Pokemon equivalent of Satan?  How do you go beyond the creator of the world?

Is it? I thought Giratina was just the guardian of the Distortion World.

On Bulbapedia, it doesn't mention one way or another that it's necessarily evil. It's Platinum Pokedex entry mentions that it was banished for violence, but aside from that, there's nothing to suggest that it's Poke-Satan. Violence could be applied to all Ghost-types, though.

Satan was banished. Hell is sort of a "distortion world". :roll; I think it's about as Hellish as Pokemon is willing to get.

But yes, Missingno is the real opposite.

Hmm...

So let's see what we have already as far as legendaries are concerned:

two sets of ice/fire/lightning trios (the bird and beast trio)
the supposed blueprint of all Pokemon (Mew)
guardian of the sky and leader of the beast trio (Ho-oh)
guardian of the sea and leader of the bird trio (Lugia)
guardian of the forests and potential Poke-Time Lord (Celebi)
the personification of land creation (Groudon)
the personification of water creation (Kyogre)
a weather negator and leader of the above (Rayquaza)
empathetic twin dragons (the Lati@s twins)
a space virus in Poke-form (Deoxys)
a wish granting fairy who only wakes up at certain times (Jirachi)
a trio of elemental golems (the Regis)
the leader of the above (Regigigas)
personification of time (Dialga)
personification of space (Palkia)
personification of good dreams (Cresslia)
personification of nightmares (Darkrai)
personification of willpower (Azelf)
personification of intelligence (Uxie)
personification of emotion (Mesprit)
Poke-God (Arceus)
Poke-Satan (Missingno / Giratina)

We also have Mewtwo, Shaymin and Heatran.

Did I miss any?

I thought I left a couple out.

Thirty-five legendaries altogether, making up seven percent of all 493 Pokemon. Fourteen of which that were added in Gen IV alone.

So the legendary breakdown is like so:

5 original legendaries in Gen I

6 added in Gen II

10 added in Gen III

14 added in Gen IV

If the trend continues, we'll have at least 15 new legendaries in Gen V. Yeesh, we're gonna be drowning in legendaries before too long.

Phione is not legendary. It's a damn 'tard child of Manaphy cause Manaphys are eternal babies and having sex with babies is wrong. And I forgot what roles Shaymin and Heatran played, but I swear, I see more than 5 legends, I'm gonna flip out. Reminds me. I need to catch Kyogre in HG....

I dunno.  Ditto might like the idea of being the only Pokemon compatible with every other Pokemon, save certain legendaries.  Hot Ditto on <Insert Pokemon here> Action sounds much better than HSOWA.

I trained a Ditto to level 100 once in Red.

Then I accidentally activated the switching moves glitch and I was left with a glitched Ditto.

It did create hilarious results in battling though.

‘Black’ and ‘White’ Legendary Mascots Revealed: Reshiram, Zekrom

EDIT:
City maneuvering video clip
Battle video clips

I wager this game will be released on the 3DS in some form or another. Either through exclusivity, forward compatibility, or Pokemon Grey. I bet 100 chickens on it. I mean just look how much depth that city has and how those attacks just fly towards the screen!

Yeah, that will be one of Grey's main selling points. But Black and White will remain DS-only. No point in switching now.

EDIT: Oh, never mind looks like they'll be DSi-enhanced. Whatever that means.

New Pokes.

Pigeon poke is the new Pidgey/HootHoot/Taillow/Starly. I like its design. Zebra looks to be Dark/Electric. Do want.

Also a shot of the new PokeProf. Was kinda wishing they'd finally use Ivy, though. 🙁

New Pokes.

Wait wait wait. I thought they were going to get rid of Ash for the new B&W protagonists in the anime? He's back? The new tag along character isn't even one of the game protagonists?

They're never getting rid of Ash. Never.

That being said, "they" said they weren't ever going to replace Brock again after the Orange League, but that appears to be the case again. And for some reason, "they" were put off by the fact that White (and Black) will be slightly older MCs compared to the previous 10 year-old protagonists so it was decided an anime-exlusive character will be introduced instead as Ash's female companion/arm candy.

Wow, most of these new ones are so horrible I dont even want to pass the time looking at them potentially ; but then some of them are cute and use plain colors and animal features like the first games.

Also, Fake Edit: I am always wearing Proffessor Ivy's face and lax posture. On purpose.

Short English trailer

POKÉMON BLACK VERSION AND POKÉMON WHITE VERSION LAUNCHING IN NORTH AMERICA ON MARCH 6

Upcoming Nintendo DS Games Introduce More than 150 Never-Before-Seen Pokémon and a New Region to Explore

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 27, 2010 - Nintendo of America today announced that the Pokémon™ Black Version and Pokémon White Version video games will launch in North America on March 6, 2011. The games, playable exclusively on the Nintendo DS™ family of systems, are a completely new adventure that Pokémon fans old and new can embark on. Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version introduce more than 150 new Pokémon and a new region to explore.

Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version feature new Pokémon that players can catch, train and battle as they progress through the game, and some Pokémon can only be caught in one version of the game. For example, the Legendary Pokémon Reshiram™ can only be caught in Pokémon Black Version, while the Legendary Pokémon Zekrom™ can only be caught in Pokémon White Version. Additionally, the two games feature different areas for the first time in the series, with the game world of Pokémon Black Version featuring a unique metropolitan area called Black City, and a lush, green area named White Forest only found in Pokémon White Version. Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version also mark the first time in a Pokémon video game that the seasons will change in the game world. Certain Pokémon appear more frequently during different seasons, and players can only access some areas during a specific season.

Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version let players start with one of three new Starter Pokémon - the Grass-type Snivy™, the Fire-type Tepig™ or the Water-type Oshawott™. Until the main story of the game is complete, every Pokémon that players encounter will have never been seen before in previous Pokémon games. The games also feature original boy and girl trainers who set out on an adventure in the new Unova region.

“Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version represent a generational leap forward for the renowned series, delivering an unprecedented number of new Pokémon to catch, battle and trade,” said Marc Franklin, Nintendo of America's director of Public Relations. “Whether you have played the Pokémon video games before or are just getting interested in them, you won't want to miss Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version.”

Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version are now available for pre-order from major retailers throughout North America for a suggested retail price of $34.99 each. A deposit may be required for pre-orders. See individual retailers for details.

For more information about Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version, visit http://www.pokemonblackwhite.com

Got a problem.

Should I wait for Pokemon Grey -.-? Dunno. Maybe I should get one just to learn the mechanics of B/W. Might be smarter. You can only read and interpret so much raw data from Smogon, lol. Gotta get that practice in.

Oh yeah Unova, dunno why the hell that changed the name of the region. Maybe because WE AMEWIKAN H888 CHANGE!

Thing is, there's simply no precedence. Every region retained its Japanese name (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, etc.) despite so many other names getting localized (towns, Pokes, characters). Was there some sort of japanese joke or pun with "Isshun" that I'm not aware of? I can see them altering the name to retain the reference... just not changing it for the sake of changing it.

In the long run it doesn't really change anything whether they do or not, but it begs the question: why start now?

lol, I almost feel like waiting for the eventual 'Gray' version but this generation looks pretty interesting so I may just jump in. Unova does sound really weird but I forget most of the region names anyways. I can only seem to remember specific towns, if that.
