Ha. Giving this another shot.

I was recently reminded how much I enjoyed one of Squaresoft's (now Square-Enix) more underrated offerings: the Parasite Eve series. Based on the novel by Hideaki Sena, the first Parasite Eve game was released in 1998 for the Playstation console and was considered to be a sequel to the book, and has so far spawned two more sequels. While the novel was rooted firmly in Japan, the game series stars protagonist Aya Brea and takes place in the United States in the late 90's.

PARASITE EVE

OP - 30sec TV spot - It all started on Christmas Eve, 1997...

Aya Brea is a rookie cop assigned to the NYPD's 17th precinct and leading a relatively normal life. While on a date attending an opera at the prestigious Carnegie Hall, the stage, performers and even the audience are mysteriously set ablaze by the main actress, Melissa Pearce. Calling herself "Eve", she challenges Aya (who is unaffected by Eve's powers) to stop her mitochondria from supplanting humanity as the planet's dominant life form. Together with her partner and mentor Daniel Dollis and, later, a scruffy-looking Japanese researcher named Kunihiko Maeda, Aya must track down Eve and stop her machinations while also trying to come to grips with who and what she really is.

Parasite Eve was one of the first games announced in development for the Playstation after Final Fantasy VII. Developed locally in Squaresoft's (then) new LA studio, this game was to be a showcase for the graphic capabilities for CD media. Dubbed "The Cinematic RPG" by Square, this game utilized pre-rendered backgrounds and a intriguingly addictive combat system that focused on dodging attacks in a free-roaming environment under the ATB (Active Time Battle) system, as well as many gorgeous FMVs to guide the plot forward. In some ways it resembled the Resident Evil series in atmosphere, with grotesque monsters infesting a city under siege... but played very much like a typical jRPG, with a level-up system and various ways to fine tune your weapons and armor: by distributing Bonus Points gained in battle or by using "Tools" to remove and attach desirable properties from one weapon/armor to another. For a magic sytem, Parasite Eve introduces Parasite Energy, a mysterious power Aya can wield to aid her in battle. A Taste of Battle

Special attention should be paid to the game's soundtrack, done by Yoko Shimomura who had previously worked on Super Mario RPG as the main composer and would later compose music for Legend of Mana and would become the main series composer for the Kingdom Hearts franchise. This game is filled with beautiful compositions, such as Missing Perspective, Arise Within You (the battle theme), Under the Progress, Force Trail, Urban Noise (map theme), and the incredible Parasite Eve Main Theme.

PARASITE EVE II

OP - 30sec TV spot - 3 years later, a new nightmare stirs...

Having left her job at the NYPD several months after the "Mitochondria Eve" incident, Aya Brea joins the F.B.I. and aids them in tracking down and eliminating the remnant Neo-Mitocondrial Creatures that occasionally appear in the wake of Eve's death. She is assigned as a member of the newly-created Mitochrondion Investigation and Suppression Team (M.I.S.T.), based in Los Angeles. The appearance of a new type of NMC, called an Artificial Neo-Mitrochondrial Creature or AMNC, in Akropolis Tower leads Aya to the small desert town of Dryfield where a new menace to humanity lies in wait.

The success of the first Parasite Eve lead Square to produce a sequel, but not without making some drastic changes to the formula. Unlike PE1, this game is a lot more of a Resident Evil clone, as the game-play mimics the RE series right down to the indomitable tank controls. The level up system is gone, with experience points gained in battle used solely to power up Aya's Parasite Energies, which gains her new spells. Aya's weapon power and defense is solely dependent on her equipment, which can be found or bought w/ points gained by defeating AMNCs.

The battle system is also different, the ATB being replaced with free-roaming and manual aiming. A lot of people felt betrayed by Square's abandonment of the previous game's unique traits. Unfortunately, despite trying to ape Resident Evil's survival horror shtick Parasite Eve II never comes close to grasping what made games like RE2 incredible game-play experiences. Despite that, the sequel manages to outdo the first game with a better graphic engine (still pre-rendered backgrounds, but they and the 3D models looks so much better). Gameplay footage

The soundtrack also takes a bit of a hit. Relative newcomer Naoshi Mizuta fills in for Shimomura, having composed soundtracks for Street Fighter Alpha, Mega Man & Bass and more recently is one of the main composers of Final Fantasy XI. Here he does his best Shimomura impression but never seems to come into his own. Tracks like MIST ~ Headquarters, Ghost Town ~ Dryfield Theme #1, Ambush! ~ Random Battle Theme #1 , and Watch Out! ~ Akropolis Tower Theme #1 seem more about ambiance than Shimomura's compositions.

There was one thing about PEII that I enjoyed: Aya's thoughts. Just about everything in the game can be examined by Aya, and often she'll give a one-line description of what she's looking at. Sometimes this leads her into reminiscing about her past or remarking on how her mitochondria are keeping her physically younger than her age would imply for the purposes of procreation. It's a neat little touch that adds a bit of depth to her character, and a lot of times they tend to be quite humorous.

And that brings us to the newest game in the family, and one that is so far removed that it can't be called Parasite Eve anymore:

In 2007 "The 3rd Birthday" was officially revealed to be in production at Square-Enix's Jump Festa 2007 event, after many years and rumors of its existence (at one point, the game was in development for the PS2 before being canceled. The game engine that was conceived would later be used for Dirge of Cerberus). Originally, it was to be a mobile title, much to the chagrin of PE fans outside of Japan. Later, at Square-Enix's "DKS3713" event a teaser trailer revealed that the game's development had been shifted to the Playstation Portable. Here's what we know about the game so far:

- The enemies in the game are called The Twisted, and tend to be composed of twirling tentacles and other limbs. An investigatory team known as the CTI is formed within the year to combat them.

- The game was moved from mobiles to the PSP because the scope and quality was too large for phones.

- Aya will use a different sort of power in this game, instead of the Parasite Energy featured in the original PE games.

- You can enter into battle with a sleeveless outfit, but the defense will be really low.

- The game is an action RPG in the guise of a third-person shooter.

- Apparently the defensive property of clothing (armor) are directly related to how exposed Aya is, so if you want high defensive gear, she's not going to be showing much skin.

- The game is self-contained and is meant to be a high quality single player experience.

- There is no multiplayer whatsoever.

- Battery consumption on the game will be high. (333mhz confirmed?)

- The story campaign is 12-15 hours long

- Aya's activities between PE2 and T3B will be slowly unveiled as the story progresses, in flashbacks

- The game begins on Dec 24th 2012

- The game areas and stages take place in New York City, the boss battles take place in some other dimension

- Shoulder triggers used to lock-on to enemies and to bring up the quick weapon inventory

- Camera controls on d-pad, movement with analog

- Face buttons used for action (context sensitive including shooting), grenade throw, reload, and Overdive

- Overdive allows Aya to take control of different NPC allies in battle

- Aya has her own fixed weapons, but can also use the weapons of NPCs she dives into

- Ammo supply will be limited

- Aya can use Overdive to position allies before diving out, or to take advantage of them for additional ammo/weapons

- Before Aya is killed, she can dive out to another NPC if available, to escape death

- There will be weapon customization involving parts you can buy, but you cannot combine different weapons to make new ones

- Weapons will have levels and can be improved

- The game is being developed to the highest graphic standards, with help from internal teams who have worked on FFXIII and other HD titles

- Yoko Shimomura makes her triumphant return to the franchise, and will be composing the soundtrack.

Is it wrong that I'm getting Las Plagas vibes from these creatures? Game looks pretty good for a PSP game and Yoko always knows how to compose a soundtrack so it could be interesting...?

I can't blame you for being skeptical. PEII left a lot of fans with a sour taste in their mouths. 3rdBD promises to be a better experience. Game Director Tabata even went so far as to claim that the game will give western shooters a run for their money. But it's all talk until the game arrives in our hot little hands.

And, according to Yoshinori Kitase, if the game does well it could be the start of a new series of games.

You know, I was JUST thinking about this game. Mostly "Is this damn game even still in development?" I rather enjoyed #2, finding the Resident Evil-with-a-taste-of-Final Fantasy mix better than the Final Fantasy-with-a-taste-of-Resident Evil mix from the first. The trailer won't play for me, so all I've got to go by is the writeup. Looks... interesting.

I'd love to play the first two games, but to the best of my knowledge niether were released in Europe >: I'm hoping they come out for the PSN so I can at least download from the American store. Looking forward to The Last Birthday, regardless.

Ah, about that: Square-Enix has never made either of the two previous Parasite Eves available on PSN. It is widely believed that the reason for this is that they no longer own the copyright to the name "Parasite Eve", which belongs to the author Hideaki Sena. This is considered the reason, if not the main reason, for the third game not having "Parasite Eve" in its title and it shifting away from the plot intricacies that came out of the novel (sentient mitochondria).

Square-Enix could very well purchase the license to use the name again, but they don't appear interested. Because of this, we may never see any re-releases of PE1 and PE2. They seem content to rebrand the franchise and take it in a new direction.

Parasite Eve 2 actually came out in Yurop in August 2000. It must have sold well enough, because it became a Platinum title in 2001.

And, according to Yoshinori Kitase, if the game does well it could be the start of a new series of games.

So potentially more useless sequels/prequels/spin-offs/etc? I dread that since I still have some love for the original PE (haven't played the sequel, though I should) and I don't like the idea of it following the same path Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts did. That said, shame I don't have a PSP, but this game (and a couple of others) wants me to go grab one.

Shame about that, Psx, and whilst it seems possible that I could track down a ps1 copy of PE2, I'd much rather have the convinience of psn and i'd prefer to play from the first game as well. Real shame about that, but if Third Birthday's story is standalone, I'll probably still pick it up and see if it interests me enough to seek out the first two games.

I really like both games but its obvious the first game is far better than the 2nd. However, I will say that the game looks very pretty. But the fact that the game is teetering away from the first two makes me a bit concerned. Oh well, not like I'm going to even play it, I don't have a PSP so no luck for me.

Haven't updated this in a while. Figured I should, since I went to the trouble of making this thread in the first place. First things first:

- The 3rd Birthday TGS2010 Trailer SD | HD

Subbed trailer that was shown during TGS, reveals a few key pieces of plot. Looks like Aya's suffering from amnesia. 😮

- Japanese The 3rd Birthday website

Been updated lots since it first went up: PSP themes, wallpapers, gameplay and costume vids... check it out sometime.

- The 3rd Birthday OST Announced

(To be released Day and Date alongside The 3rd Birthday)

3 delicious discs of Yoko piano and copious amounts of nostalgia. ;_;

Voice Cast

Aya Brea: Maaya Sakamoto

Hyde Borh: Takashi Taniguchi

Thelonious Cray: Hisao Egawa

Eve Brea: Rei Okamoto

Karud "BOSS" Owen: Wataru Yokojima

Dr Blank: Ryohei Kimura

Gabriel Monsigny: Yuko Kaida

Kyle Madigan: Kouichi Yamadera

Kunihiko Maeda: Hiroaki Hirata

Little Eve, Kyle and PE1's Aya fanboy Maeda are back... sweeeeet. As for the VAs themselves... *shrugs* ... I guess it's more relevant to those who regularly watch raw/subbed anime.

^ you said it.

Look at that suave S.O.B. rock that facial hair. He's probably pushing 40 by now but he's still got time to look good, I see! Otacon's got nothing on this stud muffin.

Oh man, is he going to give Aya yet ANOTHER blasted good-luck charm? Those things were always clogging up my inventory and weren't good for anything! At this rate he's looking at another Friendzoning.

The 3rd Birthday "Final" Trailer

Was hoping to find a subbed version but this will do in a pinch. Trailer starts with the awesome Primal Eyes remix and then ends it with Square-Enix brand jPOP® shenanigans. Seems out of place for this type of game. Ah well.

Some one was nice enough to review the game's soundtrack. Read about it here. I was surprised to find that Shimomura didn't compose the entire OST. That's a kick in the pants, but if the review is to be believed I guess we're not worse off for it.

On the English dubbing side: Yvonne Strahoski (TV's "Chuck") confirms she'll be voicing Aya Brea someone in 3rd Birthday. Apparently she did some VA work in Mass Effect? *doesn't know*

Impressions!

Put in about 3 hours into the game so far, some initial impressions:

This game is definitely designed as a third person shooter and an action game. The game is pretty challenging, and most people playing on Normal the first time through will find the game relatively tough. While playing through stages, there are secondary objective Achievements which you can aim for, but many of them are pretty tough to accomplish the first time through, so I wouldn't worry too much about it at all.

The controls and handling is about as good as it gets on the PSP. Which is to say, you basically can control the game have have quite a lot of fun if you get used to the controls, but you really wish it was on a console instead. There's no dancing around it, this game is designed to be a console style experience on a portable, and it would be much better on a dual analog gamepad on the big screen.

Graphics are really, really impressive. Environments are pretty nice looking, and the texture work makes the areas look a lot more interesting. The animation in the game is really phenomenal for a portable game. Probably the most impressive animation in an action game along with Peace Walker. The gameplay models are a bit weak for the human characters, but that's probably to compensate for the fact that quite a number of people and enemies can be on screen at the same time with a solid framerate.

The game is pretty fun to play, and the level design and shooting mechanics are pretty interesting. There's a very clear western influence in many general areas so it looks and feels a lot like what to expect out of a TPS at the first glance, but there are very western design philosophies in the specifics of the game design. Enemy patterns and AI design remind me of Japanese action games like DMC and Onimusha as opposed to the more humanoid based design enemies of most western shooters. In this game each enemy type has a distinctive pattern and number of attacks, and it pays to learn the patterns and tells of the enemies to be able to avoid them better. The game is very fast paced, and enemies do quite a bit of damage, so you definitely can't just rush in and hold fire to expect to win (maybe on Easy mode).

Music is REALLY good, and generally fits the tone of the action or events perfectly. Kickass soundtrack. The story is total lolz, which fits right in with the tone and concept of the Parasite Eve series. It's a weird wacky Japanese take on what an American movie/tv series would be like with lots of weird scifi crap, stock "agent" characters, and tons of B-movie violence. The gore is the game is really over the top, and man the monsters are gross. But it definitely works.

The game isn't really perverted or as sexual as implied by most of the marketing. I'm guessing a lot of the silly %!@% they've been hyping up lately is meant to be rewards for players to replay the game and to get more achievements and better ranks.

... and then, in response to another forumer's question about game controls and gameplay structure...

It's not the controls which are the problem at all. The game is just tough. You take a lot of damage if you get hit, especially from certain enemies, so you have to be careful. A lot of the design is balanced around the fact that you can't actually die as long as there is a single other human on the map that you can see and overdive into. So that automatically means they could design some challenging areas where you have to navigate certain paths or areas solo, and it means you have to be really careful when there's nowhere to auto escape to, since if you die in a body with nowhere else to dive to, you die.

The greater game structure is episode based. There is a title card showing for example Episode 1 - A Brave New World. And after the cutscenes setting up the situation of the story in that episode, you are in the CTI HQ with a few rooms (think of it like a bigger version of the MIST HQ in PE2, or a smaller version of the police station in PE1).

Here you can customize your weapons, buy new weapons, change your outfit, customize your DNA Board, read up tons of flavor text on characters, timeline, monsters, tutorials, etc. You can also talk to various characters if they're around the HQ. The dialogue is like FFXIII, so you just walk up to a character and a conversation will start even as you continue moving around.

When you're ready you can choose to start the actual mission. Aya will start the Overdive System and transport her consciousness into the past event that they want to change or investigate. Once in the mission it progresses like any other shooter, where you get cutscenes and events when you get to certain checkpoints, but otherwise you just keep moving towards your objectives on each map (either an exit, or interacting with something, or destroying a target, etc). If you die, you can retry from the last checkpoint. Or you can Ascend back to the CTI HQ to change configurations before retrying the mission.

Each mission has several chapters, and a mission can be fairly long. The first episode's mission started with a miniboss fight, then you progress through a bunch of areas, then there's another miniboss fight, then you go through more areas, and then eventually you fight the actual boss. Took me over an hour. At the end of a mission you're ranked based on how long you took, how many times you died, how many soldiers died, what difficulty you were playing on, and also on sub objectives completed. Aside from the mission sub objectives, there are also achievements for each chapter of a mission, which you can check in the pause menu during a mission. These are challenges directly related to the level in that chapter, and can be pretty tough (like requiring to keep all civilians alive in a club area which is overrun by enemies).

Later...

Beat Episode 2. Yeah, the game is definitely tough. Also, it's not a straight "kill everything by shooting" kind of shooter either. It's the sort where especially for boss battles, you have to pay attention to what's going on and figure out the unique pattern or weakness to beat it. Knowing how to dispatch enemies in the most effective way with save a lot of ammo and pointless damage too. The ranking system is pretty brutal, so far I've gotten B for Episode 0, D for Episode 1, and C for Episode 2. I suck. :/

The story for the game is amazing. Amazingly.... nonsensical. It's probably one of the most illogical serious takes on the nature of time travel I've come across. Not only does it make no sense, but it's presented in such a serious and matter of fact way that I wonder if Toriyama is really smoking so much bad weed that he really believes that the crap he's writing is actually in any way something that presents itself has being non-confusing and just bizarre.

I wonder if he's ever seen the TV series Quantum Leap? 😮 Oh well, Japanese vidya and nonsensical plotlines go together like green eggs and ham.

Don't care much for them injecting more silly fanservice into this but I wonder if it still has any creepy/scary/freaky moments like I got in the first one?

Still need to listen to the soundtrack.

wow how weird i was thinking of watching parasite eve the japanese movie this week.

i love the storyline for parasite eve but more the gameplay... kinda like dino crisis but much cooler. and brea is just so hot you just cant not have fun playing the game as that character.
as for PE2, it went weird in the story but the gameplay was still awsome enough for me to replay it a million times, so even if birthday sucked it would be cool nonetheless.. i cant imagine it not being worth the buy.

Watched some videos of the gameplay but it doesn't seem like it has that slight horror aspect that the original had, which I kind of liked. Is this true or am I just a horrible judge of things?

Really liked the movie to the opening. Guess I have to listen to the soundtrack!

My copy's arrived, but it shall have to wait. Currently playing through PE1, getting lost in the museum, and waiting for PE2 to come out on psn.

So... I managed to wipe the floor out with the skeleton t-rex. Now that I'm at the battle with Eve at the Statue of Liberty, I've hit a complete dead wall. There is NOTHING I can do to beat her.

What the hell, man.

Well, as for the 'slight' horror aspect, I think it's about the same level. Then again, I found the predecessors to be about as scary as the Blade films. Freaky, disturbing, horrific, but not scary.

As for beating Eve, all I can say is GRIND. Uh, you did choose NOT to save right before fighting her or at least use a different save, right? I remember having to do that my first time (and I probably had to start over too.) Sorry I can't offer any tips. I just beat both games myself, but I was playing EX mode 3rd round with my souped-up shotgun named Mr. Boom. Easy peasy when the boss dies in less than 10 shots.

I just beat the game. It only took 10 hours and 12 minutes (don't know if that includes cutscenes or not.) Upon watching the ending, I stood up, laid the PSP down on my chair, ran across the room, jumped on my bed, and shouted (or at least said in a louder-than-average voice) "WHAT THE F___?" Actually, I've been saying that since chapter 3 or so but it came to a head at the end. Now, I'm not saying it's bad, if for no reason other than the fact that I don't know what the hell happened in that game. Perhaps on my replay I can make sense as I go. Yeah right.

YEAH, I DOUBLE-POSTED, SO WHAT?

2 protips:

#1: Beat the game on Easy first, then Normal, and then Hard (if you're the completionist type.) You get to keep your ending stats. I just got up to Hard with 33 levels under my belt, and it's looking to be a very rocky ride. I'm still on chapter 1. The very first enemy you meet (if you skip the tutorial) took damn near every bullet I had in my ultra-powerful machine gun. I shudder to think what it would take with the default weapons. On that note, a single Wad ate up almost all my ammo for the default rifles the troops carry (I figured I'd conserve my upgraded SWAT-issue one, fat chance.) On top of that, the enemies do an ass-ton of damage per hit. Don't try to save time; trust me, you are NOT ready for it. Normal wasn't too bad (and in fact pretty easy with the machine gun) except for the (2nd to) last boss. Probably because he moves too fast for the machine gun to be effective.

#2: You can rapid-fire the handguns by hammering the R button. That would have been INSANELY useful to know on my first 2 runs. I knew you could do it in Liberation but didn't try it otherwise.

For all your lightgun shooting needs and some other insanity too.

There is no Parasite Eve "3". There's PE1, PE2 and The 3rd Birthday. And T3rdB came out in North America three weeks ago. There is only the PSP version. o.o
