After a very unexpected birthday present, I'm now a member of the contemporary console market again.

I already have SSBB, Big Beach Sports, Wii Sports, Carnival and Raving Rabbids 2 as a bundle. I'm not too fussy about genre, so what games would you guys recommend for me to try?

As a major Sonic fan, cut me and I will bleed rings, I have EGGMAN carved into my forehead, so I can't stress this enough:

Get Super Mario Galaxy. It gave me the most magical hour before my sister took her Wii away. Horrible girl.

Wario Ware is quite cool as well. But you already have a few party games though.

Wow JT....I totally thought you were going to say something about Sega Superstars Tennis. Anywho...ummm I really can't give you any specific games, sorry. I'd most def. suggest taking a look around the Virtual Console and even Wiiware. There's some good stuff hidden within it's programming. And congrats on getting a Wii.

Wii is heavily a multiplayer machine, and that makes solo play games hard to find. Needless to say Mario Galaxy is a must have. I adore that game and after you adjust to the controls, it clearly beats Mario 64 in my books.

Super Paper Mario is fabulous. Take the old school Mario games, give them a HP/Level system and a unique humor that only a Mario game could pull off, give it a semi-interesting plot, some awesome development and a good 30+ hours and you have a dang fine game. I'm told it's less fun than the predecessors, but it's still great.

If Grid Based Stratergy is your thing you must own Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. I am actually banned from mentioning that game by name at home because it stole my life for the greater half of this year. It's the sequel to Path of Radiance on the Gamecube, so there's a lot of continuity which you'll miss, however.

As mentioned, Wario Were is buckets of fun IF you have a stream of people to play with. Alone, you're looking at a few hours maximum.

Another single player gold is Metroid Prime 3, but only if you can tolerate FPS games. I cannot, so have not played it personally, but have watched someone else do so.

Zelda Twilight Princess is self-explinatory.

If you're noticing that all of these are Nintendo first-party titles, then get Zak and Wiki, it's Capcom's insane puzzle game with cartoony graphics and bundles of fun. Not played myself, due to lack of funds, but from what I hear it (and perhaps "No More Heroes") is possibly the only decent non-Nintendo game a single person can play.

Sonic and the Secret Rings if it's in a bargain bin. The game can be fun, but it had a HUGE issue with the whole "buy your standard moves" thing, which basically translates as "by the time you have enough skill points to enjoy the game, it's over" That and there are like 7 stages which you play 120 times. It gets old. Boring. Repeatative. Frustrating and... generally unfun.

I'd shill Link's Crossbow Training and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, if you like lightgun games, however for their price, they are not worth it. Combined they have 12 hours in them. Max... and for the record, I loved both games.

You should also look into the online games. I hear that the Wii Ware titles are infectiously fun and the good old Virtual Console is always fun. A few games (Mario RPG for instance) games which never made the UK are being released there. Infact, from my angle, the EU Virtual Console seems to be one long apology to the UK... with mild amounts of up-yoursness on the slowdown.

Wario Land: Shake It! (or The Shake Dimension as NoE needlessly renamed it) is coming out on the 26th over there (22nd here), so that's going to be worth a purchase.

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition is also awesome if you've never played it before.

Galaxy. Resi 4. Maybe Twilight Princess as well.

And that's all.

Mario Kart Wii if you like that particular franchise. As a party game, of course, it's better when played with a group. At least the online functionality is not a big plate of lag and and a side of bacon, soss, and spam a la SSBB.

If you were a fan of the original and like upbeat games with a hint of dreamy fantasy, and maybe if you find it discounted, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is a pretty nice title. I got it even before getting a Wii, so determined was I not to miss out on the second incarnation. It's pretty short to play straightforward, and the voice acting may be cringe-inducing at times, but the extra challenges will keep you occupied for many more hours than the story alone.

Lastly, I second Craig's motion on Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. It should be a law or something that all people who form cogent thoughts beyond the next button mash in video games should own a Fire Emblem title.

Of those that haven't been mentioned, No More Heroes is good fun, if boring in between the levels with the grinding bits, but good humour, and fun action.

I myself still want to get Metroid, Super Paper Mario and Zack & Wiki, so it might be worth trying them too.

Outside of first-party Nintendo waters, I'm afraid that, with a couple exceptions, the Wii library is really dry, full of shovelware and sloppy PS2 ports. As mentioned, Super Mario Galaxy is a definite buy--easily the finest game available for the system, in terms of fun, good implementation of the Wii remote and graphical prowess. Metroid Prime 3 is also good if you fancy a slower-paced adventure game, and Zelda: Twilight Princess is about as good a Zelda game as you could find. Super Paper Mario is a decent game as well.

As for third parties... well, there's No More Heroes, which is a hack-and-slash with a penchant for Japanese samurai movies and has a fantastically tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. Resident Evil 4, if you haven't played, is an excellent action game, and the Wii version is the best bunch of the lot due to the stellar controls.

If you're a fan of RPGs, the well is nearly empty, but there's Fire Emblem: Radient Dawn as well as the upcoming sequel to the GameCube classic Tales of Symphonia.

A bit of advice, though: when shopping for Wii games, DON'T go for anything by a company called Data Design Interactive. It will end in tears.

Coincidently, by owning a Wii you also (magically!) own a GameCube. So there's another library of games to draw from, if you so desire.

With the addition of needing a GameCube controller and memory card.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that one. Boom Blox is easily one of the best multiplayer games you can find, anywhere.

Which I just so happen to have - and I don't just mean by borrowing Craig's, either.

I actually came across a store on Thursday that was selling NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams for US$40, and pounced on it. The biggest criticism of the game I'd heard was that it doesn't innovate on the original - but since the original, CHristmas NiGHTS and Streetfighter Alpha 2 are the three reasons I still own a Saturn, I can live with that.

Thanks, guys - I'll have to check some of these things out.

Personally, I recomend Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (But only if you have Path of Radiance), Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and No More Heroes. And for the record, no, I did not read any other post but the first one... and no I can't spell...

Get some wii points. Titles I recommend:

Mario Bros 2
Dig Dug
Xevious
Anyone know if the Homestarrunner WiiWare is any good?

As to game titles...I have to agree with others: No More Heroes. Cooking Mama: Cook Off and Wii Play are insane fun. Additionally, there's a port of Dead Rising coming to Wii soon, too.

Yea I was thinking she was in England but I didn't want to make assumptions. Thanks. I'm sure i'll get shot for mentioning this, but I enjoyed Sonic and the Secret Rings...if you can find it for $20 or less...i'd consider picking it up. Mario and Sonic at the Olympics is really fun too.

Oh, yeah, Hiro has a point--Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure is an excellent little title, and Okami is a fantastic game that everyone should play.

Oh, heck, yes, to SMRPG, I spent all my money to get a Wii Points Card, and a box of Coke but that's not important, just so I can download this game, and while I was at it, I also downloaded Super Metroid!!!!! However, I'm sure as heck going to play SMRPG first, and if I have time before Chronicles, I'll play Super Metroid!

Anyway, as for the topic at hand, I'll echo the recommendations of Super Paper Mario and Metroid Prime 3. As far as the VC goes, I suggest the original Metroid, Paper Mario, DKC, and Kirby's Adventure. Of course, ignore what ever VC suggestions that isn't on the UK VC.

Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People (or SBCG4AP) is quite awesome, yes. Far better if you're a Homestar Runner fan, but it's a fun game even if you aren't (and don't mind a bit of mindless humor). That being said, the PC version is cheaper ($35 vs. 5000 Wii Points/$50), so it might be better to opt for that version.

Of course, this is a moot point right now since only Episode 1 is out, but still.

Wow, this is sort of sad. Nights, the game that a lot of fans asked for, came out, was declared mediocre, and now can be found new for $2.99.

They don't exactly exist on the west coast, either... but that hardly merits a facepalm. Interesting bit of trivia, really. To see such a highly sought-after sequel to one of the great originals collecting dust in the bargain bins of America.

It's because it was a crushing disappointment, with terrible graphics, voice acting and platforming, saved only by the traditional stages that, unfortunately, were still not as good as the original.
