Maybe, Sonic did wear a Mario cap recently because Mario is 25. And maybe on Sonic's 15th we will have Mario wear Sonic's sneakers.

Considering all the talk of Sonic almost being in SSBM, and how almost every interview with Yuji on the subject has him approving the idea. I think it's certainly possible.

And considering that was an April Fools' joke, I don't think Sonic being in a Mario game (or any other game made by Nintendo) is very likely at all.
The rumour was an April Fools joke, but Naka has been quoted in an interview earlier in the year to have said he's interested in such a crossover.
However, Naka is not in charge of either Sega or Nintendo so it's not his to decide on such a thing, plus he's had so little imput into the Sonic franchise as of late it'd be unwise to listen to him on anything these days.
