Okay, so I don't really know the rules of the forum, but I'm only visiting for a short bit(in this one topic) and I'm going to try and abide by as many forum rules as I possibly know, so that should keep me out of trouble...
ANYways, I had this crazy idea that since the Nintendo Revolution was going to be so small, I could mod it into a Dreamcast so that the Revolution would function like a Dreamcast, as in, it would react to the power/reset/eject buttons like a dreamcast would, but when you played it, it would use a Revo controller and you would put in Revolution games. Originally, I got the idea after hearing that Sega might team up with Nintendo on the whole 20 years of backwards compatability thing, and I thought it would be awesome to have a Dreamolution. But, if I did make this, would anyone(a question now asking each of you) be willing to buy this? And for how much more than a normal Nintendo Revolution? $20 more? $50? Maybe even $70?(as in, I buy the Revo at $200, and you buy the Dreamolution at $220-$270)
Also, If I could, I'd eventually find a way to mod(for lack of a better word) the dreamcast controllers so that you slid the Revo controller in like a memory card, and had wireless dreamcast controllers for Revo games that used controller plug ins(like the Retro games). But, that's a long ways off from the original idea.
Uhm, dude, it's just a case mod. People have been doingf that for ever.
I once put a NES in a shoe case. I calle'd it the NEShoe, and uit's gonna charge you 50 extra bucks.
I guezz it's cool, half the people here who can't chop for s**t would prolly buy it. There's like no way you can to the controller modding, and you wouldnt even be able to use the DC's controller ports... It would just be a mear case mod and a wasted dreamcast.
Erm, I don't know if I didn't explain it well enough, but this would really be more than just a case mod. This would be trying to get the Revolution to function using the same setup that the Dreamcast already had, so since the Revo is supposed to not need as much power as other consoles, I'd use the dreamcast power cable(if I could) and I'd try to get it using the dreamcast video cables if possible, it would use the same disk reading laser as the Dreamcast, basically, it would work exactly the same as the dreamcast until you turned it on and played a game. It would look like it really fit.
Ah, but I'm just asking. If you really wouldn't pay a cent for it, then that's what I want to know out of this topic.
It wouldn't work unless you are highly skilled and have access to a large array of expensive equipment, simply because the Dreamcast's top-loading drive mechanism works completely different from the Rev's slot-loader. You'd need a fair whack of custom electronics (and probably a low-level softmod) to get the Rev to work with a top-loader. In addition, you couldn't possibly use the existing optical pickup because the Dreamcast uses CDs while the Rev uses DVDs, which require a completely new set of semiconductors and a different laser.
If one were able to get around this problem, it could be done as easily as stuffing a PC in a Mac G5 case, which has been done before. Gut the DC, stuff all the Rev's guts in the case, plug up unsightly controller and modem ports, Dremel any new holes as required, replace the power transformer, and voil -- a Revolution in a Dreamcast case, as promised.
I don't know why you'd want to, though, as the Dreamcast is ugly and the Revolution is not. What would be better is a software Dreamcast emulator for Revolution. Better yet, a Dreamcast emulator for Windows, so I don't have to buy any hardware to enjoy Dreamcast games.
I dont know really the Dreamcast isnt that ugly it is a bit plain though. there are uglier consoles out there. But (has to be said) Revolution is a sexy beast.
Dont really see the need in modding console cases unless its a sticker type thing. I've seen some good ones for Xbox.
