Granted, this place rarely sees much traffic anyway. I figure it's because all of the more obsessed Mega Man fans congregate in other areas of the web where the main focus is Mega Man all round. I'm sure, somewhere out there, there's a Mega Man forum with a small section just for Sonic fans to talk about his games but rarely do. Well, actually they'd have plenty to talk about since Sega continually pumps out new games for their mascot on a regular basis, despite once saying they would tone it down to focus on quality. *shrugs*

But here we have Capcom, king of REHASHAN and SEQUALS... and no new Mega Man games announced for the foreseeable future that isn't some derivative of their Battle Network games. How can this be? They've long since abandoned the original franchise (their last real game in that line being the excellent Mega Man & Bass) focusing mostly on the X series until that eventually petered out (Inafune, father of Mega Man, having since jumped ship to craft the Zero series as he had originally planned). Zero took up the mantle and was pretty godly for a non-console series, and then ZX took over where it left off (to mixed reviews, I understand). Meanwhile, in between platform shifts we've had a short stint of Mega Man Legends (Inafune's most ambitious project) and then a take on the Pokemon phenomenon in Mega Man Battle Network, particularly crafted so that it can easily be rehashed over and over again ad nauseum (just like the good old days!).

So what now? Star Force has taken over for Battle Network, retaining the familiar gameplay that made BN great but eventually yawn inducing. While as of yet there's been no announcement of a successor to the great, classic platforming gameplay that's been the very essence of Mega Man since its inception.

What the hell, Cap? Is it that your sales figures are telling you that the gaming public would rather BATTLAN and TRADAN instead of old standbys of run and jump? Has the masses given up on rewarding platform hopping for a futuristic take on cock fighting? Are random encounters and chip collecting more eagerly acceptable than thumb-blistering fate-o'-the-world robot heroics? Is this the direction the video game industry will eventually find itself if Capcom has anything to say about it!?

Well, no. That's silly. But I'm still waiting, Capcom. I'm sorry, but Street Fighter IV isn't going to 'feed the need', you know? Now, I'm not advocating that Capcom start churning out Mega Man titles like they were movie licenses, budget titles or party game spinoffs... just the occasional true-to-its-pedigree gem to continue the legacy. That's really not much to ask, is it?

(You can thank me later, Vec)

Can I thank you now instead? Because this is basically how I feel.

I want more platforming awesome with characters I actually recognize, Capcom... I think your biggest mistake was making those Mega Man remakes PSP-only, when they'd prolly have done bazillions better on DS or Wii.

Heck, who knows? They might still make good WiiWare titles if you compress 'em down even more. Or if you put both titles onto one Wii disc, then, well, I'd buy it.

But yeah, Dr. Wily hasn't done a damn thing since, like, 2003. I wish he would, he was quickly becoming one of my fave villains.

You know what would be good? Like one huge HDish remake of all the original series (Gameboy ones and all) on one of the new consoles. Yeah. I'd buy that. =3

I'd be down with seeing more platforming with Megaman, though I never found that franchise to be accessible, due to it being oh-my-god-head-explode difficult. I've never ever beaten a MM game. o.o;

Ah good, SH... thanks for reminding me about the remakes. I took both Mega Man Powered Up! and Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X as attempts by Capcom and Inafune to reintroduce the original titular mascot and its first spinoff to a new audience. An opportunity which was completely wasted by having them developed for the PSP, which was still struggling for market share in Japan at the time of their release. Which is an incredible shame, as both titles were excellent games that managed to improve upon the originals in many ways. If Capcom had waited until late last year to release them they might have seen quite a different outcome in sales, as titles like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Capcom's own Monster Hunter series have stimulated sales of PSP units by a great margin.

Then there's the two compilations, which I understand did pretty well here in the states, particularly Mega Man X Collection (despite being less than what was originally promised). It only served to prove that Mega Man is still as popular as he ever was. Which makes Capcom's reluctance to issue forth another title all the more perplexing.

Hey, just had a thought: Remember way back in the mid 90's, when Sega and Sonic Team steered away from the Sonic franchise for a while so they could concentrate on developing new IPs? The Saturn era was pretty void of a true Sonic title (except for those developed internally by outside contractors for Sega) which, looking back now, may have led to its early demise. And while it also saw one (great) compilation in Sonic Jam, but it wouldn't be until the Dreamcast was announced when Sonic would return in grand fashion. And what an entrance!

Food for thought.

...and then they proceeded to make his games worse and worse with each subsequent entry until he wound up in the rut he's in today.

Also food for thought.

Whenever they do make something new or continue with the X series for consoles, you'll see me in here for sure.

I aim to please.

It's somewhat regrettable that he didn't show up in Brawl, though. That'd have done wonders to revive his recognition amongst the clueless masses - and probably made any potential revivals far, far more feasible. But, eh, even knowing as much as we do about Brawl's unusual development, we don't exactly know everything they were planning, third-party-wise (other than that Snake was in from the start and that Sonic was added in as late as 2007). Can't have 'em all, I guess.

But yeah, I really don't want another Star Force. Battle Network was fine and all but after having played through MMBN2, I really don't feel up to tackling as many as they keep pumping out - nowhere near as ready as I am to taking on another 2D sidescroller with good ol' Dr. Wily trying to take over the world with eight Robot Masters. Again.

His tenaciousness is part of his charm!

"Well, once again Mega Man has thwarted another one of my sinister plans for world dominance and defeated my 8 evil creations. But that gives me an idea for another set of Robot Masters, some of which are only slight variations of previous designs. Come! Let us prepare for tomorrow night."

"Why, Doctor? What are we gonna do tomorrow night?"

"Same thing we do every night, Protoman... TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!"

Bass'd probably be a better choice considering Protoman isn't associated with Wily.
