Deep space. Out here, there is nothing but the rebounding echoes of creation. This was before the invention of the Jump Gates. The Gates took centuries to build as the founding planet, a small, blue world on the edge of its galaxy, beamed the instructions for their construction across all of space. With these gates came cataclysmic wars. Systems died and were rebuilt as the cosmos blinked. Two millenia passed as wars fought to their conclusions and the local galactic cluster regained a sense of peace. Sure, small wars broke out here and there, but like the individual histories of each planet involved, each empire with a hand in things, things mostly settled down like a pan of hot grease left to cool: sure, there'd be one or two pops of war, but this didn't really concern the whole pan.
Cut forward to 5530 AD by the Sol Alliance calendars.
Today, Jump Gates have meshed the local universe together in such a way it's hardly imaginable how sentient life-forms got by on their own. Like so many other technologies, it was amazing how necessary it made itself upon invention. A few groups melded into superpowers on the intergalactic scene, most notably the Sol Alliance, made up of a good portion of inhabited systems in the Milky Way, and the Wayfafrer's Confederation, made from systems flung from their galaxies and built in tight star clusters in the space between galaxies. The Holy Brotherhood of Andromeda, bound together by a small but militiant star system near its galactic core, makes the third. Countless other independent systems, alliances and even the occasional sole planet are represented when matters that concern everyone(literally) is involved, but for the most part, everyone just tends shop, so to speak.
And now, we begin.
-New Austin, Asteroid Chain, Sol System-
The tiny city was nothing more than a waypoint for the near-Jupiter Gate. Even so, it was a popular starport locally. Cut now to a small establishment, with a jolly abbot painted on the sign holding a neon-lit frying pan. Every few seconds, the frying pan would "lift", and a lit hamburger patty would appear above it. This was the Freir Tuck, popular diner in the town.
Inside, all manner of alien races can be seen here...apparently fried food was something that underwent parallel evolution across the stars. The gruff, pudgy man behind the counter cupped a hand to his face. "Order UP!" The message translated in a dozen languages at once over speakers inside the establishment as the mechanized waitress, a being from a world of sentient machines, skated over to a table where a lone figure sat, draped in black and with his face partially concealed by the dim lighting. He'd sent out an all-bandwidth transmission looking for mercenaries to find something...who would respond and meet him here?
