- WELCOME TO THE BLACK MESA RESEARCH FACILITY -
You are just a worker at the Black Mesa Research Facility, a decommissioned missile base somewhere in Black Mesa, New Mexico. Many top-secret government experiments go on in this huge compound, but you are allowed to know very little. You just work here.
It was just another day, doing your usual thing. Although you were once excited about your job in this "top-secret" facility, it's all a bit monotonous now. Riding that tram system every single day... How annoying. Pretty much everything is the same every day you have to work.
Until someone really screws up.
The lights go out all of the sudden. You feel around and call out to know if everyone is alright, when everything turns on again.
A male voice sounds over the speakers all around the facility, sounding a bit nervous but straining to control himself.
"Now... Everyone keep calm. The short power outage that just occurred was simply due to a slight mistake in the test chambers. The problem will be fixed in just a minute. Please turn off all electronics so if there is another power outage-"
You were eagerly listening to the voice, hoping to know what really happened, when it just stops.
"What's going on?" a scientist standing next to you asks.
"Oh, things like this happen all the time," says another scientist. "Don't worry-"
Then the lights go out again. You were calming down with the scientist's reassurance, so this power outage wasn't quite as alarming. That was until you heard a sudden burst of electricity and see a bright flash right in front of you.
"What the Hell is that!?" screams the scientist, holding a flashlight and shining it at you.
But the light wasn't touching you... Something was in the way. You reach forward and touch something cold and strange. Something you knew was living.
The thing seems to say something. From what you could tell, the thing wasn't facing you. Then, in the light, you see what could only be arms spread outward and strange fingers reach toward the ground. Electricity leaps from the ground and reaches for the hands of the creature in front of you.
"MY GOD-" a scientist shouts, but is quickly silenced for eternity as the intruder controls the electricity and sends it at the scientist.
"RUN!" shouts the other scientist, and you quickly agree. The attacking thing says something in a completely inhuman tongue, you hear electricity surge from the ground toward the alien once again and it fires. The hot bolts hit your back and everything goes black.
- INTERMISSION -
Oh some god! Is this the end? No. That would suck. Then it wouldn't even be a roleplaying game.
If you've played the computer game called Half-Life, then you'll know that it's all about surviving an alien attack and escaping your former workplace, AKA deathtrap happy fun time land explosion park. In this RP, players will basically have to work together to escape to the surface. This is not a furry RP, although I did consider it, so if you only like being a furry, this is not the place for you. No, you cannot teleport in furries along with the aliens. You can't be an alien, either. They're all evil, devilish things, and will not work together with the players. In fact, they will most likely eat the players and enjoy their delicious man-flesh.
In this RP, you can be the following things and make a "character sheet" if you want to: Scientist, Guard... That's really it. You can be anything else that would fit the theme like a janitor or some guy visiting on business, maybe.
All players will connect very early in the RP, and if you have any questions, feel free to either private-message me or post them here.
- WAKE UP -
"Wake up, dammit!" says a distant voice. You can't see anything, but you can sense that there is light in the room... Or wherever you might be.
Suddenly, you begin to come to. Everything is a blur, but you eventually find yourself in a relatively small room that is lit by a single fluorescent light fixture on the roof. A scientist is standing over you. "Oh, thank God... He's alright." There are other people in the room, but the only ones standing up are three scientists. On the tables and floor you see a few unconscious-- or dead-- people.
"What happened?" you ask to the scientist as your vision clears.
"I... Can't say. But I can tell you that, whatever happened, there are a large number of casualties and many beasts attacked... It was probably the latest experiment. I tried to tell them not to do it! I knew it was a terrible mistake!"
"You know what the REAL problem was?" says another scientist. "They got that low-level fool Gordon Freeman to handle the experiment! He ruined everything! This wouldn't have happened if they had gotten a more experienced-"
"Don't go pointing fingers!" said the first scientist. "The Xen species have been known about throughout the facility, they should have expected that they would find some way to teleport in places other than our holding cells and tubes! The fools, they shouldn't have done it!"
Before the other scientist could continue the argument, you spout out the words, "What are Xen?"
The scientists share glances.
"Oh dear..." says the third scientist. "We shouldn't have said anything."
"Are you mad?" begins the second scientist. "EVERYONE needs to know about these things and how to stop them!"
"But what are they?" you press.
The scientists tell you of how, for a very long time, they have teleported aliens from a world called Xen and experimented with them. You, with your low security clearance, didn't get to know very much about this. But now you realize that rumors going around were all true: These alien things really were here, probably before you even began working here. And now you had to escape with your life. But you can't do it alone...
- END INTRO -
Although the character told in this story is described as "you" and knows nothing about the aliens, it's basically a way to get a player involved and let people know about the plot of Half-Life and this RP. So you don't have to be "you", although you can be the first person to take the place of "you", who I really doubt could qualify as a scientist because he/she doesn't know about the aliens. "You" isn't actually required anyway and can qualify as an NPC. You can just as easily be any of the characters in this post, such as the scientists or bodies of random people lying around in the room. The unconscious people can be whatever you want them to be, as long as they fit the bill described in the intermission. I will start my actual post introducing my character...
Right now.
- DOCTOR BAKER -
"Oh, I forgot to mention..." Begins the middle-aged first scientist. "The creature that attacked you in the hallway when we found you is called a Vortigaunt. We like to call them slaves, however, because that is what they are." J. Baker was embedded into the nice little rectangular pin that was pinned to this scientist's shirt, but it was difficult to make out because it had spots of red blood on it. In fact, there was blood staining his white lab coat and blood on the other scientists and soon it became obvious that there was blood staining the floors, walls and people inside the room.
What a bloody mess.
"Who cares what it's called?" snapped the second scientist. "It's trying to kill us and all we need to know is how to kill it back!"
"Well, I did find this pistol off of that security guard, may he rest in peace... That's how we saved you," said the third scientist to the man on the table (formerly known as "you").
"I didn't know he could even use a gun," said the first scientist. "After all, it's against the rules for a scientist to arm his or herself."
"To Hell with the rules!" shouted the second scientist. "We just need to get out of here!"
- GETTIN' STARTED -
To begin, I would recommend either being one of the two remaining scientists, the guy on the table or one of the unconscious people waking up. Give your character a little bit of history, such as what they did before "the incident" and how they made it inside the room if you feel like it. You can come through the only door as someone completely different, but either way you should really end up in this room by the end of your first post as long as everyone else is still in here. You can otherwise just join along the way. All security guards are armed with pistols, armored vests and bullet-proof helmets. Scientists aren't normally given weapons. Janitors... Are you really going to be a janitor? You know, they don't allow non-security guard personnel to carry weapons inside the facility and nobody is allowed to bring their own weapons inside, so you'll have to find a weapon like everyone else.
PLEASE don't make any super powerful characters, don't try to lead everyone by yourself, don't magically find powerful weapons and don't make terrible events happen such as everyone teleporting to Xen or a Gargantuan attacking without asking me or everyone else if it's okay.
This is a pretty long intro post which may discourage people from joining, especially since this is a no-furry RP. But we'll have to wait and see.
If you want to know more about Half-Life, this website will really help. Blue Shift and Opposing Force (links on the left of the webpage) are expansions to Half-Life, so if you want to know more about the plot I'm basing this RP on, then you might feel like checking out those as well, specifically the overview pages. Just scroll down on the left to see a list of Allies, Enemies, Weapons and an overview of the game if you're unfamiliar with anything. Shouldn't be too complicated.
