OOC: If it turns into something I may name it, for now an nameless fanboyish SatAM continuation thingy so I can play with a new character and get the attitude right.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The most indescribable feeling known to mankind is hopelessness. Any word used does not remotely convey the magnitude of mental anguish inflicted by this emotion, and no one that hasn't felt it can possibly know what affect it has on the hapless souls ill-fated enough to contend with this so inauspicious of feelings.
But that in fact was the feeling that radiated the small space vessel. The bridge was abuzz with many species of creature running about in a frenzy amid smoking pipe and sparking bulkhead. It was easily discernable that this ship was in fact on the verge of destruction, the cause was not known nor the solution in sight.
The creatures toiling feverishly to emend their crippled craft where of all walks of life. From the old doglike creature apparently captaining the vessel to a small human child who dispite his stature was working almost hysterically to adjust something on a flickering console he had to actually sit on to see.
Dispite this pandemonium there were two members of this hodgepodge of a crew that opposed the insanity of their peers. In one of the crew quarters lining one of the few corridoors on the craft two more animal-like beings sat cross-legged, eyes shut. The elder looked in his late twenties, some sort of fox with a oddly auburn overcoat marking itself as his defining garment. The second creature was younger by some stretch, by comparing appearance and phyisque to human standards he looked a teenage, and an oddly calm one at that. Both sat in complete silence, as if ignoring the fact that their death was close at hand.
Some measure of space away was a planet. This was no ordinary planet, mind you player, this is a very renowned world in your mind. The world of talking animals and metal armies. Indeed this was the world of Sonic the Hedgehog, not that discordant from what you left as you finished watching it on SatAM in your youth. Many a fan wondered what horrors the supposedly more scholarly Snively had planned for our heroes, this is just one of thousands of ideas to that motif for your indulgence.
Our hero and his charges currently reside around a workbench belonging to the ballcap clad walrus called Rotor, their intense topic of deliberation is that of a new enemy. In fact there were new types of robots that our friend Snively had created, and they did in fact possess far more guile than his predecessor's contraptions. But this wasn't the point of contention among knothole's heroic ranks, no sir or ma'am Snively's intelligence wasn't their main problem, moreover it was his goals. Once settled the pint sized tyrant in fact wanted power, not destruction. And because of this there were compromises that were reached. Yes my dear player I speak of non-robotic opponents. Not even those fluffy mobians are free from greed and corruption. Many have made what would be humanly called deals with the devil to ensure their freedom and livelyhood.
The very subject of their discussion is the morals behind killing other mobians in the name of peace. You would be discussing this to, if you so decide your character is in fact mobian and in this adventure.
As your favorite little creatures are dramatically playing the effects of killing their own in their minds and debating leaving knothole for a safer haven, if it so exists. A mixture of crackling and high pitched whining begins to crescendo outside. Fearing an attack our heroes and your characters run outside to repel whatever nefarious plot Snively has unleashed on Knothole.
You are only able to a darkening sky momentarily before a massive metal object smashes into the ground throwing you and yours into disarray. Yes, player, it is in fact the spaceship I previously made commentary about. It has smashed into Knothole and by this event everything has changed. You, players, are now in control of the fate of this world. You may take whatever form you wish, be it human, mobian, Kydane, or something else. You may take your own form or that of an existing character. The two stoic animals on the ship and their charge will be your connection to me on this adventure.
With this Mobius is in your hands players. You must deal with the threat of robots, evil mobians, Snively, and the possibility of more dangerous threats in league with them. Characters not taken or spoken for will be assumed dead. Those deaths will be on the head of one character, the sole surviving member of the bridge crew of the vessel that crashed.
I leave it to you. What do you do? And there is no initiative roll.
OOC: Oh snappage! I like this one!
I got dibs on Sonic! =O
IC:
Sonic the Hedgehog had been discussing with his fellow Freedom Fighters about the impact of the war against Snively, and what would happen next. They knew they might end up fighting some of their own kind. He voiced himself strongly against killing other Mobians, but the meeting was interrupted by the sound of a large crash. Before anyone could say "Hollapaloozah," Sonic was gone with a sonic boom.
He was one the first one on the scene of the impact, due to his obvious speed. "What the..?" He gasped, as he saw the carnage which had been created by the impact of what he could only describe as being 'a big ship' to investigate.
Was this one of Snively's attacks? That wasn't his biggest concern at the moment, as innocent Mobians had screamed. Huts were destroyed and some were on fire from the impact, as debris had been hurled into the air. It wasn't a pretty site. Sonic had launched into action. He needed to help put out the fires!
--???--
Time it self seemed jarred by the impact, stuttering and jumping from moment to moment as she stumbled through the wreckage, the flickering red emergency lighting only adding to her dazed state. Shattered wall and ceiling panels littered the corridor, consoles hung from their shot bindings, ruptured power conduits spewed showers of flair like sparks with every irregular pulsation that throbbed along their splintered pathways. Again that voice sounded from the few open communications that weren't laying in ruin, its form warped and disjointed to the point of total unreconition, but even so she knew what it meant.
The double doors ahead were buckled, one laying at a peculiar angle while the other moved undecidedly back and forth, as though unsure which way it should come to rest. With a single minded intention, she grasped the twitching door, dragging heftily aside and stumbling into the scene of destruction that had been main engineering.
Almost immediately, time found its footing again.
Bodies littered the floor, one scorched and peppered with broken glass, another seemingly unsaved yet laying lifeless across a console onto which it had been thrown. One was still moving, propping itself up against a flicking console weekly, blood streaming from a gaping wound across its face.
As she approached, the survivor turned its head slightly to acknowledge him, fingers still pressing blindly at the hopelessly irresponsive control panel.
"Its not-"it stumbled "Its not responding.. I- I can't shut it down."
Her eyes were drawn to the reactor that dominated the room, its internal turbine spinning with an ever increasing tenor and the foreboding vibrations that rushed away from its base permeated the bay and surrounding corridors with such vigor that what little paneling remained on the various surfaces was quickly being shaken loose.
Again, her single minded task returned and, bolting away from the injured crew member, ran full tilt across the room, scarcely slowing as her hands met the inset ladder that led up to the gangway around the overloaded generator. Here the tremors were visibly more acute, the normally firm walkway proving near impossible to negotiate as she made her course toward the final ladder attached to the side of the reactor. Scrambling to the summit of the cylindrical machine, she tore at the cables that linked vital systems to the decaying reactor with a systematic prejudice, checking off each one as she did so in her mind's schemata while simultaneously grabbing for strategically placed levers. There was a hiss of gas as a large dome like edifice rose at the command of the final lever.
No time left, a conduit exploded somewhere behind, the foce knocking her to the ground as she desperately scrambled toward the newly emerged contraption at the reactors hilt. The coupling holding back the leaver gave with a definite snap, virtually downed out by the wailing reactor and various power supply lines exploded around the room. With every last ounce of strength she had remaining, she grabbed the rusted hit of the leaver and pulled it unceremoniously downward until it reached its lower most point.
Silence blanketed the room in an instant. Darkness along with it, permeated only by the blinking emergency lighting and the occasional bright illumination of sparks flying from the still charged power lines.
Steadily, with no trace of the urgency that had preceded the calm, the thinly worn Raccoon gingerly slumped against the edifice and slid down until she came to rest with her legs sprawled out across the still steaming surface of the reactor. For a moment the canine allowed her head to recoup, panting in an exaggerated manner and keeping her eyes lightly closed as the immediate crisis was lifted from her still reeling mind. Then, with certain impertinence to her now throbbing injuries, she rolled to her side and used the momentum to gain a footing. Gradually she staggering back down the ladder to the gangway and then to the debris scattered room below, where once again she slumped against a wall, jabbing a shaky finger at the com panel.
"Bridge"
Static was the only reply.
"Bridge Captain? anyone?"
Though his life had so far been a short one, the young cub had seen and heard many explorations in his time. However he'd never 'felt' one before. Even from the opposite side of the now reinforced village, Miles felt the sound of the exploration blow through him, and instinctively he dove away from the window, expecting the lazer blasts to commence at any moment. Yet now there was silence, and aside from the commotion that was quickly building outside virtually no sound of a fight or flight in progress. Gathering his wits, the youngster scrambled to his feat and rushed outside to see for himself. Awaiting him was the gathering crowds all staring at the growing plume of black acrid smoke that was rising above the tree line. Military and security people darted toward their battle posts in a desperate race to secure the perimeter of the village from the attack they believed to be on its way. And yet amidst the chaos the child stood quite still, gazing up in puzzlement rather then shock. He knew that trail that led away from the spreading black column, the telltale sign of an object hurtling downward from an unseen origin. He'd seen similar effects from long range rockets. But this was something else, the trajectory was wrong and the diameter far larger then a simple ballistic weapon. Something had crashed in the forest Something big.
OOC:
yay for postage. I joined as it looks as though Heros is going to fall through. As no one elce has grabbed him yet I'll also keep Tail's in the game too, but if anyone elce would like him as a main character then feel free to yoink him away for your own devices... man that sounded so wrong -_-"
OOC: This looks interesting.
IC:
Red light filtered through the debris that buried her, she blinked wearily, allowing herself the luxury of a gradual recovery. She began testing her body movements, everything seemed to be working-no, there was something wrong with her leg, not surprising under the twisted metal.
A sharp grinding noise echoed down the corridor as she kicked out with her good leg, dislodging the metal enough to get her arm into a better position so that she could put the needed force behind it to shift the unwanted pressure. As it clattered to the floor, the red panda got her first good look at where she was and felt the impact like a physical blow, crew members lay dead where what seemed like only moments ago they were frantically working to get the ship back under control.
As she cautiously eased herself off the floor, she wondered how many had survived, and needed medical treatment? Attempting a step she winced, reminding her that she was one of those people.
Keeping away from where the wall had imploded on her she limped steadily to where she could use the corridor as a support, bracing herself against it as she travelled through the broken ship. If she met anyone she'd help them, but first she had to find one of the emergency medical kits, which if it hadn't been destroyed in the crash, she would find attached to the wall only a few metres away from her current position.
"Please be there," she whispered softly to herself, "I need it to be there..."
OOC: Well do I count as a player?
IC:
Mute watch the scene from his hiding place in the trees several meters away from the crash site and the flames. He had a strong urge to jump down and to search the reckage for any surivors. But then he would be revealing what he was, a freak, an easy enough thing to think when you had a pair of horns sticking out of the top of your head and the rest of you being a wolf-cross-cat-thing. Though he knew that there were others who were different, and peopleaccepted them, he couldn't help feelign an intense fear of rejection and hatred, it had happened before, it could happen again.
But I want this place to be different...
His gaze flicked back to the craft, furries were gathering around ti, or trying to help others surrounding it where it had wrecked a part of the village. They seemed uncertain of it, not surprising really with the threat of an attack from Snively looming over their heads.
"Rico, GET UP" The rabbit growled the room was shaken, bedding tossed about, beds broken and scattered. Both the rabbit and the fox he'd called Rico looked in good condition considering the disasterous crash. He wiped blood from a small cut on his forehead and pulled the larger fox to his feet, "Dammit Rico, wake up." His yelling seemed to be of negligible effect in making the fox's eyes open. Again he grumbled, then hoisted his unconscious counterpart over his shoulder with uncommon ease.
He walked to the door, of course it didn't respond to the button designed to open it. He cursed, "Why did I see this coming..." He glared at the door, then lowered Rico to the ground and focused on a point beyond it. His rather small hand curled into a fist.
*BAM*
He struck the door head on. Without pause he spung around and stuck again with the side of fist.
*WHAM*
Another spin and his foot struck with even more force, causing the metal to groan.
*CRACK*
The force shoved the rabbit back several feet, as if all planned his next move just as fluid as the rest. The hare took full advantage of his larger feet and stronger legs but that alone could not explain his next move. The young man almost seemed to shoot forward instead of jumping, both feet slamming into the door with so much force that it literally popped off it's tracks and fell to the floor.
The rabbit picked up his partner and walked out into the hall, turning toward the front of the ship and running off hoping the crash had breach the hull ahead of them.
The bride was expose to the mobians, a few braver souls approached and peaked into destroyed ship. The metal was stained and coated in blood. The bodies looked like Mobians, but they wore clothing over their whole body and were much larger, the size of overlanders. There were what seemed to be humanoids as well. But mobian, human, overlander, or whatever, they were all the same. They were all dead, save one.
A small human child, stood rhymically pushing a black and disabled panel. It was as if he was still trying to get the mangled craft to respond. Judging from the lost look in his eyes and the bleeding cuts all over his small frame it was obvious he was in shock. His red hair, glasses, and fair complexition only added to the heart clutching scene.
More static, the coms were shot beyond all hope of use or repair. The Raccoon cursed beneath her breath, head leaning heavily against the wall before her as though the shock was only now beginning to catch up with her. Coupled with this, her mind was doing rather unhelpful things, like calculating their angle of decent and working out the more probable places where the hull may have been ruptured.
A reality check interrupted her thoughts, remembering the other badly wounded crewmember. Turning slowly, her eyes landed upon the slumped figure in the far corner of the room, barely moved from the spot where she had left him. Stumbling over the debris, she knelt down beside the mink, gently lifting his drooped head to examine the cut.
"Marty?" She said lightly, checking for a pulse when no response came. But it was too late. Cursing beneath her breath, the raccoon looked downward for a moment before closing the Mink's eyes for him. Was there no one else alive on this godforsaken ship?
Gathering her wits, she made a semi conscious decision and made for the door. The bridge had the best armor on the boat, perhaps there was someone still alive there?
The scene was far more intense in person than it was seeing the aftermath on a screen. High above a small craft circled around the immense crash site. From above he could see that everyone was totally oblivious to his presence.
"This is the easiest recon job ive had in a long time. It's a horrid sight, but I've got a job to do."
The craft began to fly in large spirals down toward the crash sight, keeping a close watch on the entire area. From this perspective, he could see the mobians scrambling to the craft, some still holding back not knowing what to do. At that moment, he was able to get in closer and view something rarely seen by most mobians: Blood, and lots of it. The ship was full of people, beings not very different from our own.
"Holy... this is unbelievable. Boss, you getting these images?"
Over the comm, sitting in an unknown location in a room full of monitors, Snively watches the footage being relayed to him through the reconnaissance crafts cameras.
Snively- "My word... I set up for an attack only to be halted by some ship doing the job for me! Fexus, return to HQ, looks like we can take a breather for the moment and let Knothole enjoy it's present from the sky..."
Fexus- "Yes commander, will do."
He looked back with his own eyes, closer now than before. he could make out the faces on the mobians that were victims, and the gore of bodies strewn amongst the debris. A young girl and her mother were crying as they tended to someone with what appeared to be a severed leg.
Fexus to himself- "This isnt something to be happy about Snively..."
Looking away with a hurt feel for the situation, he headed back to HQ.
The doors were stuck again, and nicky had to tug them out of the way before the bridge stood open to her. What few mobians that had braved the wreckage for a closer look, quickly sprang away at the appearance of this dauntingly large woman that was now leveling an equally over sized gun in their general direction. She let out a hiss like a gasket blowing off as she stalked across the dismembered room.
"Shoo! Go on! The lot o' ya!"
The natives practically fell over one another as they scrambled back out of the large fissure through which they had climbed, leaving the angry looking raccoon standing amidst the destruction that had been the ship's bridge. Bodies. Blood. It was everywhere.
Nicky lowered her weapon, features softening in dismay at the horrific site. She'd rode with some of these people for many cycles, never once believing that she would out live them all in such a dramatic and ironic way. Her hearing twitched at a dull clicking sound emanating from one side of the room, the human child still pressing catatonically at the console he'd been attempting to mend.
"...Sparky?"
Quickly holstering her weapon, she jackknifed over to the child's side, observing his shocked condition for a few worried moments before gently clasping the boy's shodure.
"Sparks?..."
The child's movements did seem phased but he did reply, however quiet and whiney, "I don't like being touched. Steering won't do anything. I can't get it to make the right noise. And don't call me Sparky." All three sentences where monotone, the same eerie seriousness he always spoke with but with even less emotion than usual.
"Damn, what the hell happened up here? Where the hell's, oh nevemind, there he is." The rabbit had entered carrying Rico. His voice was rather commanding, "Kee quit messing around, we don't know if this things gonna blow or not." The boy didn't respond, so he turned his attention to the girl, "You, you were one of the engineers. There anyone outside? Is this thing stable or do we need to evacuate anyone in the area?"
Outside more confusion followed, aliens were here. Sonic and other survivors were frantically trying to quell the fires and at the same time get wounded to the medical hut.
The mobians crowded around the crashsite itself were becoming less frightened and more angry. Tails could hear threats being growled out and people saying there was someone in the ship with a gun that tried to kill them.
In the void of space above Mobius, a flicker of light appeared and a starship materialized into existence, exiting hyperspace. It was a small craft, just a one-seater starfighter, and not one built for long-range travel. The only way the small craft managed to traverse the gulf between stars was by attaching itself to an external hyperdrive ring, a highly experimental device from the world it was created. Risk, however, was no stranger to the pilot of the craft.
The being at the controls of the ship was a grey-furred canine, or rawulf as his people called themselves, from a planet that was just starting to explore the absurdly big galaxy beyond their home system. Contacting intelligent life and civilizations circling stars other than their own, they were surprised to discover that much of the galaxy was in chaos, torn by interstellar wars...very much like their homeworld was until recently. This presented a unique opportunity for those brave enough to voyage among the stars to aid those in need and act as representatives of their homeworld.
James O'Canis, the pilot of the starfighter, was one of these. He had promised his friends and loved ones that he would quit these sort of missions...but voyaging beyond the confines of his syste, was just too tempting to pass up. And so, there he was, flying high above an alien planet, blue-green and alive, much like his own.
And the damn refugee ship he was supposed to escort wasn't there.
"Refugee transport Hemayan, this is Furkian escort fighter Guardian One. Transport Hemayan, please respond", he spoke into the ship's communicator. No response. He was sure these were the agreed-upon coordinates and the right time, so where was the blasted transport?
After several minutes of waiting, James detatched the hyperdrive ring and throttled up the ships' drive, cruising into a high orbit of the planet, scanning for the ship's transponder signal. After a full orbit of the world below, he detected the signal...on the planet's surface. What was the transport doing there? Was there some sort of emergency? A change of plans? Whatever the case, he wasn't getting answers from way up there. He had enough fuel for several hours of flight. He could afford to fly down to invesitage, and if he needed more fuel later, there was an auxilary tank on the orbiting drive ring.
After calculating an approach angle for atmospheric entry, James oriented the craft so its belly was facing the planet's surface and began the long fall down.
"No," Nicky replied simply, releasing the boy's shoulder and turning momentarily to the rabbit "I had to take the reactor offline manually. Just don't go rubbing against any power conduits, they're still charged." Her attention turned back to the child who was once again tapping at the console incessantly. Gently Nicole lifted his head with the side of her hand, quickly examining the cut and the dazed look in his eyes before he snapped back to continue his console.
"fesp he's in shock." She muttered quietly, dashing a look back at the rabbit who already had more then he could carry in terms of body weight. "Nothing we can do in here, We've got to get them outside. I'll take Kee if you've got him?"
She could deffinitely hear voices, and voices meant survivors. Melanie had headed instinctively for the bridge, some vain hope of finding the captain and getting instructions, but now all she needed was to see more people alive after all the dead bodies she'd passed.
The med kit was now slung over her shoulder after she'd found it on the floor only a little away from where it was supposed to be, the red panda hadn't used anything except pain killers on herself, she didn't have time for anything else, she had to know if anyone was left.
Finally she lurched through a doorway, and felt a rush of relief, there were others, it was okay. She immediately asked the first thing that came to her anxious mind,
"Anyone in need of medical assistance?"
"Don't bother, Nicole. Tobias, you can let me down now." The fox on his shoulder had woken up. The rabbit grunted and slid the larger creature to the ground, "About time Rico, anything broken?" Rico shook his head and turn to Nicky, "He won't listen, you know how stubborn he is." The fox cleared his throat and fired a very strict tone, "Keedis Underwood, cut that out and come over here. Now."
The boy still didn't budge, in fact he jerked away from Nicole's hand indignantly and kept going muttering, "I just have to redistribute the power between the nacelle's and it'll be fixed."
Again the fox spoke, narrowing his eyes, "Keedis, no. Over here. Now."
The boy didn't move instead whining, "Please. I promise it'll work. Please?"
Rico wrinkled his nose, "Sparky, what does no mean." This time the rhythmic tapped stopped and the boy turned around, "But I..." His sentence trailed off, his catatonic state finally broken his body finally gave out sending him falling backward into Nicole's arms. The fox gave her a nod then turned to Melanie, "Did you see anyone else alive on your way here?" The ship wasn't large and with three other people that had come from the rear of the vessel any survivors would have probably been located by them on their journey to the front of the Hemayan.
After several long minutes of plunging through the upper layers of the atmosphere, surrounded by flames, James slowed the decent of his ship and deployed the wings for atmospheric flight. The nimble starfighter broke through the cloud layer and followed the tranport's signal towards its source.
James looked down at the world below him, noting even more similarities to his homeworld. A vast forest was spred out across the surface, punctuated by rivers. On the horizon, the rawulf noticed a large city that contrasted harshly with the natural beauty of the forest- cold, dirty, artificial, covered in smog. He couldn't imagine why anyone would like to live in such a place.
But his attention was drawn away from the city towards the center of the forest. As he flew over the location, James' worst fears were confirmed: it looked like the large transport full of refugees had crashed, and the word "landed" didn't apply. It was brutal, and it was a safe bet to assume that many onboard were killed. But there was still the chance for survivors, and he had a responsibility to help.
Swooping in low, he was surprised to find that, through chance or fate, the transport had smacked down in the middle of a village hidden in the vast woods. The odds of that happening had to be astronomical... The place was in chaos, the inhabiants of the village running around aiding each other or clustering around the downed craft. As he began to decend through the canopy, eyes turned up towards him, finger pointing up, more movement and chaos. It was hardly the kind of entrace he wanted, but he took what he had. Landing the fighter, James did a quick scan of the atmospheric content, making sure that it was breathable. Sure enough, it was. There still was the danger of infectious pathogens, but he was sure that the nanites inside his body could handle any bacteria or virus thrown at it.
Shutting the craft down, James popped open the canopy and stepped out onto the surface of the alien world.
"Not a sole." Nicky replied quietly, gathering Keedis up in her arms properly and casting a numb gaze toward the brake in the hull where the viewscreen had once been.
"We should get outside. This place is a death trap untill those conduits have discharged."
Back in former robotropilis, Fexus landed his recon craft on a platform, being met by 2 old model swatbots. "Stay with my craft, I might need it again shortly." he said to the mechanical guards.
Walking through a large corridor, small bots repaired parts of the city that Robotnic had neglected to bother with. Slowly Snivelys plan came into view: he was rebuilding robotropilis and making it look much less a scrap-yard and more like a real city. He rounded a corner and a new swatbot stood in front of a door, scanning fexus as he walked toward it. "Id confirmed, Major Fexus clearance granted." The bot moved quickly to the side and the door shot open. He continued walking as his casual pace as everything mechanical stepped out of his way.
Inside the room smaller maintenance bots were continuing to remodel the interior, as Snively sat in a raised chair looking through monitors.
Snively- "The reconnaissance video you took is very interesting major... That ship matches that of some alliance outside of our galaxy. Julian came in contact with one once, but he destroyed it and we assumed it was a plot by the freedom fighters."
Fexus watched his footage on the screen, it slowly getting closer to the crash site. "Sir, what do you think could have triggered this crash? We couldn't have had a part in this, and the freedom fighters will surely believe we did."
Snively- "Good! Let them think that! If it inspires more fear in them, then it's more than a blessing for my cause. At least I'm not trying to robotisize all of them like Julian did. This city is being rebuilt for them to live in, under my watchful rule of course! Mweheheee... they will absolutely LOVE being my peasants."
Fexus- "I'm sure they will sir. After all, you seem to be cutting down on the amount of pollution as well. That could be enough to have some join, at least for security as well."
Snively hmm to himself. "Yes, Julian was very reckless. I'm human too afterall, i dont want to be breathing in air that kills me now do I? However, where he failed, i will rule!"
Fexus walked over to a monitor and looked at his footage some more. The sight of blood again, something he himself hates to see. Something inside sparked a bit of revenge, something wanting to know how this craft was made to crash and kill innocent beings. If there was an answer, it might be in orbit...
Fexus- "Commander, i wish to investigate this transport being shot down. The cause was something within our orbit, im sure of it. The atmospheric scans that were running during this ships decent indicates that it was on a steady course until it hit our orbit. This could pose a threat to our plans and our spy satellites that we will be launching soon. I request permission to make a sweep of the thermosphere."
Snively hmmed to his proposal and then turned to his main computer. "Major, that sounds dangerous if you believe there is a threat in orbit. I need you here at a moments notice. If the freedom fighters decide to attack us in retaliation for that cruiser crashing, we will need your eyes to spot them so that we can repel an attack. Go and make your sweep, but do it as quickly as you can."
Fexus nodded. "Yes commander."
He turned around and walked back to his craft. "Swatbot security, activate modification for space travel to my craft. i want it done before i get there." The electronic voice of the swatbots guarding his ship replied with a "Roger". As he walked out to the platform his ship was ready as he commanded. He hopped in his vtol craft and activated the extra thrusters that were modded in before he arrived. With a quick jolt, his craft shot up near vertical to reach the upper part of the thermosphere.
James paused and looked around at the wrecked ship and village it crashed it. The short natives of the planet were rushing all around, confused as to what to do. Some wandered around aimlessly, some were trying to stop fires, some were tending to wounded, and some looked like they were preparing to defend themselves. A few were staring at him, some in curiousity, some in fear, some in anger. The rawulf felt exposed and in danger. If they all thought he were some kind of threat...but that would have to wait. Both he and the natives were too busy at the moment.
Rushing away from his starfighter, James climbed onto the hull of the wrecked ship, looking for a safe way inside. Looking up at what appeared to be the bridge, he could see figures moving inside, too tall to be the alien beings below him. The guardsman made his way towards them, calling out, "Hey! Hang on, I'm here to help! I'm coming up!"
Toby's ears shot up, "@#%$, another Kydane? Rico get them back, who knows what the guy wants."
Nicole watched Rico, she'd talked with Tobias about him on several occasions before they'd actually found him. In the short time he'd been onboard she still could not believe he was the same person. The person Tobias has told her about was a loyal loving brother that had tried to sacrifice his life so many times for the welfare of his little brother. But this... this man that she'd been told was Rico. He was moody, violent, and didn't seem to even care for Keedis.
The fox didn't even protect them like the rabbit asked him, Nicky really doubted he could, from his numerous visits to the infirmary she could tell he was sickly. Rico finally sighed, "He's concerned Tobias, I doubt he's here to attack us." Tobias was still tensed at the approached noises outside, "Concerned I'll kick his butt. You misread that sense of yours all the time."
Rico audibly growled, "Whatever," then looked at Nicole, "Lets head outside, before Tobe starts beating on the natives."
Melanie watched quietly, there was so much animosity between the two men. It was no wonder they were related, they certainly seemed to fight like siblings. But she was more concerned for the young human caught in the middle.
Well, atleast everyone here is okay, she thought, anyone she'd met on the way here had either been dead or dying, there were bound to be more survivors somewhere on the crashed vessel but right then she didn't feel up to the long limp back the way she'd come.
"Let's see what they want," she called softly, more to herself than anyone listening, "Not like things can get any worse anyway."
With that she settled herself on the floor, using what light that was coming through the hull to check her leg.
There was a gash from her knee to a little above the ankle, it seemed fairly deep the further down it went, but the bleeding was being held at bay by the metal shard sticking out of it. It seemed she was the only one who needed medical assistance right now.
"Typical, the medic needs a medic."
Mute had been lounging against the tree, torn between trying to help and staying hidden. Finally he built up his courage and dropped silently to the ground, he would attempt to approach unnoticed if possible.
He relaxed more on reachign the ship, the furries were concerned with more things than someone approaching the vessel from an angle they hadn't covered. He had tp get inside, and make sure any survivors were okay, then he could leave again with a glear concsience.
Can I hear crying? His eras twitched and he pressed one lightly to the hull of the crashed ship.
Yes, I can. I have to get inside. Deciding that he had no time for a caustious and quite entry, Mute pulled back his arm then thrust his fist into the metal, breakign it inward before he got a grip and ripped it out of the way. Panting slightly from hsi exertions, Mute bounded into a corridor and froze up for a moment at the sight of blood and bodies. Then he heard the sound again and he shook himself out of his daze.
I have to hurry. Mute didn't know how long it would take before someone noticed the new entrance into the vessel, and he didn't really want to find out. So he scrambled among the debris, all the tiem following the piteous cries that his sensitive ears had picked up.
He paused, ears twitching before he punched the metal door in his way, it fell inwards and the sobbing stopped.
"It's okay now, I'm going to get you out of here," Mute whispered kindly to the young snow leopard that was curled up in the centre of the room.
Rico shook his head and walked to the precipice, looking out at the man crawling his way over the fractured and mangled hull, "You may as well go back down. There's nothing up here but bodies." He looked out at the small crowd of survivors in the village and suddenly looked violently ill, he staggered back into the decrepit bridge and knelt down down, holding his stomach and shuddering.
Tobias sighed, "Rico, knock it off and go get the kid." Again there was a tense moment as the fox steadied himself and rose to his feet again, he let out a pained sigh and half shuffled over to Nicole. He stared stared at the small human in her arms for a few moments. "You won't be able to climb down while carrying him. Give him to me."
Nicky felt a immense hesistation in handing over the boy to this man. Untill this point he hadn't seemed to really concern himself with any of them. Tobias and started out the massive hole but poked his head back up long enough to say, "Nicky, let him have Kee, I'll explain later."
She still felt as if she was betraying the unconscious boy's trust handing him over to this cold individual, but she did trust Toby's judgement. He could be immature but he always did right by his young charge. She held Keedis out for Rico, to her suprise the hands that took him weren't the rough and jerking hands that should belong to someone with cold eyes like his. They were... soft, he seemed to handle the child just as gently as she was. In fact the little human actually seemed to finally relax, the hands that had been in small balled fists loosened and grabbed ahold of the light blue undershirt the fox had on.
"Nick, Mel, come on lets move it. Rico will come when he feels like it, no use waitin'." The rabbit's overdramatic teenage voice harped her back to reality. She follow Melanie to the edge, watching the rabbit skitter down the dozen or so yards to the ground.
Casting a short glance back into the obliterated command deck, Nicky picked out her course and started down the short but razor pitted side of the ship. In the end it wasn't difficult, the partial gloves providing enough protection from the sharp edges of the broken armor as she picked her way down the side of the ship. However, if the decent was easy, the scene awaiting them was nothing like she had expected. Fires were burning across the charred landscape, the trees at the far boarders of the impact crater blown outward by the shockwave that had preceded the ship's untimely landing. But it was only when she spotted the remains of shattered huts peppering the site, along with dozens of child sized bodies.
It hit her like a dreadful epiphany. The child sized creatures rushing around, the walking wounded, the blind panic, the blood, the bodies. They had landed in the worst place imaginable. Smack in the middle of a town.
The engineer closed her eyes solemnly, razing a hand to her temples. She was used to carnage of this sort, but it had been so long without bloodshed. Her own wounds once again took a back seat as events began to overtake them, the glancing shrapnel blow to her side making the largest objection over her sudden shift in attention. The natives didn't seem happy, those that were not aiding the wounded or fighting the fires now staring down at them with a raw bitter fury. The light side arm was still firmly secured to her thigh ready for action, but these were not odds to be played against.
Spotting a relatively clear spot above the crater ridge, she tapped the rabbit on the shoulder and pointed toward the possible put down position.
"Over there. We need to get clear before assesing the damage."
The canopy fogged over and then froze as Fexus' craft entered into near space. Orbiting the planet at an insane speed he patrolled as much area as he could over robotropolis to the site of the crash and byond. Reading the scanners he was picking up the normal space debris, just junk left over from Julians space plans that were thwarted by the hero hedgehog long ago. The moon was bright today, almost full at that.
He began to lose sight of what he was looking for and began looking over the moon, wondering why Julian never bothered to build his empire there in seclution. As if right on cue, he noticed some irregular patters on the moon itself. they looked similar to a crater, only it seemed as if veins were going to it. It looked very suspicious... like something had been or is being built.
"That cant be good... I didnt think julian had a base on the moon. I had better relay this to Snively."
Continuing his sweep, he flew to the territory where the crashed ship first appeared on radar. In the area were more casual debris, but some were larger, and more sphereical in shape.
"Ok, now this is creeping me out. This isnt space junk, because something like this would have entered the atmosphere."
As he passed by the spheres they began to attract to his ship. An alert from the sensors told him that they were closing in on magnetic and heat attraction.
"Crap! Those floating beach balls must be mines. I'm sure that's what caused that ship to crash. Time for some manuvers!"
Although limited manuvering due to lack of oxygen on the flight surfaces, fex grabed the controll stick and forced it full left and down. His craft throttled quick as he headed straight down toward the planet. The heat generated from his decent would keep the mines on him, but if he could level out and cut the engines, his heat would dissapate and he could run on the oxygen in the lower atmosphere. As he shot down like a meteor, his cockpit warnings were blairing out of controll.
"Just keep together! Almost there!"
As the craft sped down the mines followed. 2 of them were tailing him, but as they followed, they too began to burn up. in doing so, they attracted to each others heat more and more. Fexus pulled up slowly to level out, then pulled back hard as the mines flew past him and hit each other. On contact they exploded in an errie green blast that was a much bigger explosion that a conventional weapon would cause.
"Geez... those have got to be what made that craft crash. An explosion that big would make even a more massive ship sustain major damage. This will certainly effect our satelites, i need to report back."
"Hey, don't cry everything will be okay now?" sigh I'm not good with these kind of things Mute looked around making shure there wasn't anyone hiding among the dead bodies ready to attack him. He decided that it was safe,he walk towards the snow leapord girl, her purple dress was stained with blood.
"Are you okay?"
She looked up at me with her blue eyes, so innocent.
"Wh...who are you?" She gasped,
I could see she was looking at my horns woundering if I was friend or foe.
"My name's Mute, what's yours?"
"Hope,"
"Okay, Hope, let's get you out of here, it's not safe-"
"Brother d..didn't..."she trailed off, shaking slightly,
"What?"
"Brother didn't get up" she pointed at another snow leapod, "I th..think he's dead but he w..was r..right beside me p..please tell m..me he's not dead he can't die he said everything w..would be okay a..and he'd look after us in the n..new place..." she broke into uncontrollable sobs, Mute was numbed to the core for a few seconds, but soemthign stirred inside him and he bent down and picked ehr up gently in his arms, she didn't resist, instead smothering her cries into his shoulder as he carried her out of the wreckage. He followed his memory back out fo the place, no matter who saw him or what they thought, he'd make sure Hope was okay.
Upon arrival back at the base, Fexus' craft landed and he went through the usual security to reach Snively in his secluded little room. Walking in, Snively turned his chair around to face Fex.
Sniv- "So commander, any news?"
Fexus- "Sir, on my recon mission i discovered several orb-like objects. They were magnetic and attracted to heat. They pursued me as i came back into the lower atmosphere and then I executed evasive manuvers to make them collide with each other. The explosion was some odd green light, nothing i've seen before."
Fexus walked over to a screen and brought up a map. He pointed to it as he continued to talk.
"The ship that crashed began to make decent over this area, therefore it must have been those strange mines that caused the crash. The main area is unfortunetly..."
He paused for a moment and looked at the map.
Snively- "Unfortunetly what commander?"
Fexus- "Unfortunetly Knothole village. I'm sure you knew that, but i saw the damage first hand. It's horrific."
Snively got off his chair and walked around with his hands behind his back. He walked past a table and over to a different monitor.
Snively- "Unfortunate as it may be, i have a job to do! i sent in stealth units to the crash site while you were gone. They should be there shortly. I ordered that they investigate any salvagable technology on the crashed ship and not to take very long. If need be, they will attack to keep any findings safely delivered to me."
Fexus looked over at the screen that snively brought up. It was through the point of view from one of the stealth bots. They were nearing the site, and almost freely walking by huts and homes in the chaotic vilage.
Fexus- "Should i go assist them? A mobian can walk freely without steath in that town. At least i can monitor the situation."
Snively- "Yes, go immediately! i was hoping that you could make it back before i sent them, but i'm too impatient to wait. Now get going!"
Fexus nodded and headed out. to himself: "I dont care what snuffly wants, he has no reason to be hurting more mobians. at least i have technology to shut off the bots if i think they are getting out of hand."
He hopped onto a small one man transport (speeder bike) and headed in the direction of knothole.
The transport which Fexus held to the path sped through the ever increasing flora as he neared the beginings of the Great Forest. As he hit the forest a series of events happened so fast that his mind took a few moments to process it. At first it was like a flash of brown in front of him, as if he'd hit a forest animal. But he never felt the jarring from the collision. In fact it had gone up. His mind and retina's caught up to reality as he slowed the speeder somewhat and realized he'd seen a rather tan skinned overlander, or maybe a human from the crash. But it had been right in front of him, then it seemed to shoot up and over the transport. He took a glancing look in his side mirror to see what looked like a small tan skinned humanoid giving him a rather rude gesture. Fexus's brain finally processed his reactions a few moments after the event had passed. Did that guy just jump over the speeder? Should I stop? And did he just flip me off?
Back on the bridge Rico looked irritated at the rest of the survivors insistance on not leaving the bridge even when they all seemed to be discussing it and the rabbit was already scaling the half dozen yards to the ground. The fox snorted and carted his small charge over to the edge of the cracked ship, glared out at the crowd, took a few steps back the charged the hole and shot off it. Nick and Melanie both blinked, just what kind of idiot was this guy?
Toby hopped down the last few feet and turned to face the crowd, Man... this ain't good. We probably torched half the village. And the natives looked piiiiisssssed, bette not make any sudden m-
*WHUMP*
He yipped and jumped as Rico hit the ground not far away sending dust up. The event was loud enough that Mute could hear it from the ruined section of the ship. A few whispers went up from the mobians. Tobias gritted his teeth and hissed at the fox, "You just jumped down almost two stories with an alien in your arms you dolt. Are you trying to get us served for dinner by these guys?"
As the two girls reached the bottom they heard Rico snort and pop off, "Primitive worlds only understand power. The more powerful you seem, the less trouble they'll give you." Tobias shook his head and looked back, "You ladies think you can save this first contact? I really don't do well with new people, and, well, as you saw my brother's worse."
There was a sound of stressed metal from the hull of the downed transport, and then...
*WHUMP*
The grey-furred canine landed just in front of Rico in a crouch. Raising slowly to his feet, James brushed dust off of his flight suit and glanced into the fox's eyes.
"I don't know where you learned that from", he spoke casually, "But in my experience, people, 'primitive' or not, lash out at that which they fear. Presenting yourself as some sort of superior being is asking for conflict, and considering that we just wrecked their homes and are vastly outnumbered..." James glanced back at the growing number of frightened Mobians. "...that's a fight we can't afford."
The rawulf offered his hand to Rico. "James O'Canis. I was the pilot assigned to be your escort."
Close off to one side, Nicky was survaying the ship, mumbling to herself quietly.
"Frai'd Samual, couldn't have been a worse landing."
She finaly spoke up as James anounced himself, her voice graced with a semi-millitery tone less then fitting of her apperance and stature.
"We came under weapons fire before we could make the rondavu. That fighter of your's wouldn't happen to have the standard LR.soz trasmitter, would it? Ours is probably dead baken."
"Was not. Was mines." The small but rather indignant voice fired off from Rico's arms. The human was apparently awake, and it looked it he had been the whole time, the small human having apparently feigned his fainting spell.
"You obviously weren't in the war." Rico muttered toward James, as if he was completely ignoring the boy he was carrying. He didn't seem to anything more than stare at the newcomer's hand. Whether it was only due to his arms being full, or he just didn't want to. "If they attack, they'll die. It's really not that complicated."
A yellowed furred paw grabbed his shoulder, the nervously grinning young rabbit waved and pulled the fox back some, "Heh heh, don't worry about old Rick, he's a ex-warden, seen some bad stuff in the war. Not the best diplomat. I'm Underwood Tobi-Er, sorry, used to the Kydane. Tobias Underwood, one of the refugee's." He gave a sideways glance to the boy poking his head up from Rico's arms. "From what our engineer says it looks like we hit a minefield of somekind, did you make it in alright?"
Fexus parked his speeder in some shrubs just outside of Knothole, then walked the rest of the way casually into the village. He wore what appeared to be circular goggles, as it matched his attair with being on the speeder bike, however through the goggles he could pick up the energy signatures of the stealth bots. "Two to the west, one east and south, two to the north and 5 in position around the crash site. I hope they dont make a mess of things... I'm getting tired of cleaning up after them." he said to himself.
As he continued walking toward the site, he could hear all the mobians, and even see pieces of wood and metal all over the place. he thought for a moment though... who was that figure that jumped out of nowhere while he was on his speeder? Whatever, sure it's probably just another vagabond wondering through the woods. He came up to some huts and rounded the corner, immediately being met in shock as the crash site was in plain view. All the gruesome details there for him and everyone to see. Mobians were helping their wounded, while others tried to gather up remains or the dead in one area. Fex turned away with hsi head down. "This... this is horrible... how can it happen like this? Those mines did this... who put them there? why?"
He gathered up his being and headed over to the site, unable to resist, he started helping the mobians clear the area. He could see through his visor that 3 of the stealth bots were close and already scanning the ship, even while mobians pased by them, oblivious to their presence. "Good." he thought to himself. "Let them do that, just as long as they dont make themselfs know to the people."
He continued helping the mobians. he could see some of the regular heroes doing their jobs. Sonic speeding around, getting people to the medical area, tails doing his part in search and rescue... this was a different kind of battle for them, but they were doing fine as always. There was a child, a small cat mobian looking at him holding a stuffed animal. she just stood there, and then looked back at the wreckage. Fexus went over to the child and asked her: "Are you ok kid? This is horrible, isnt it... where's your family at? Do you need help finding them?" The child pointed at an area that was on fire, being put out by rotor and one of his water pump inventions. It was a huge fire, but almost out now. "They were there..." She said. "I can't find mommy."
He did the best he could not to shead a tear, but it truely was horrible. How can people like snively be so greedy at a time like this? He looked over to the girl and helped her up. "I'll help you. We'll go look for your mother together." She did make any action or say anything in response, simply just hid half her face on the foxcoons shoulder as he walked over to the area she pointed at.
It began as a dull quiet cry, but it's cresendo soon made it a loud yelping scream, "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!"
The voice undoubtedly a kid's he turned, hoping there wasn't anything too serious. Then it came into view, for a moment panic hit, fading into a very irritatingly twisted look on his face watching his speeder come flying through the area with a rather stocky young man clinging to the controls. The out of control vehicle speed through the area, forcing people to dive aside.
His eyebrow began twitching in frustration watching it somehow managed to turn itself around to zip past him one way, then another. Further wrecking several huts and rescue attempts, all while the still yelping youth was yowling from his precarious perch on the controls and trying in vain to control or even stop the craft.
After the youth's loud entrance, Melanie had struggled down the slope, and had been wondering how the natives would respond, she felt a pang of sorrow for all the wounded she could see and felt a strong urge to go help them. All this was interrupted when a fast moving vehicle darted through the village causing more destruction and forcing several tasks to be abandoned, the cries of the driver didn't help at all either.
It has to be stopped before it kills someone, maybe if I could time a jump right... her leg spiked with pain, warnign her not to do anything stupid, anxiously she watched the craft, and got ready...
The arrival of the speeder was yet another blow to the chaotic rescue efforts of the mobians, wrecking nearly everything in its path and knocking even more people to the ground in its wake. He had waited long enough, no one else going to do anything, so it would have to be him.
Watching its movements closely, the fox aloud the bike wiz around for a few more minuets, a multitude of velocity equations, impact factors and variable speed VS time theories running though his small mind. The timing had to be perfect.
The bike took another turn, this time the boy made sure he was directly in its path, a timer counting down the hundredths of a second as he locked his sight onto the flimsy fuel pipe on its right side below the riders feet.
At the last moment when the rider finally noticed the child in his path and began its ill fated turn, the youth took a step forward, leaping at the fuel line and catching it with both hands.
"YES!" He yelled in triumph, only to be cut short as he realized the pipe was slightly more firmly attached then he had thought. Helplessly dangling from the out of control vehicle, the fox desperately scrabbled to gain a foot hold, twisting himself around to cling onto the side of the rampaging machine. Sure of his grip, he reached up and gabbed the riders leg, and with an unceremonious heave, dragged himself in one swift movment onto the saddle and over the other side, taking the rider with him.
Together they rolled across the fetid ground in a tackle before finally coming to rest with the two tailed cub on top, pinning the wreckless other beneath him, both limp in shock.
--
Nicky emerged from the shell of the wreck having ducked back inside momentarily though a gaping hole in the ships bow. The speeder racing around the clearing was an interesting sight, but due to the level of chaos the area was already in it didn't score too high on her list of priorities. The coon slung a large canister onto her back, tightening the straps and setting down the other similar device before removing the long nozzle from the end of her own.
Quickly she assessed which areas were worst hit, spotting the several buildings ablaze toward the edge of the impact zone and strode towards them with intent, bellowing "Get out of the way" at the various creatures attempting to quell the flames with crude buckets of water.
Running up to the face of the inferno, Nicola twisted the handle on the device and let fly a billowing cloud of white gas that rolled over the twisted burning wreckage like a viscous liquid. The moment it touched down, the flames vanished beneath the pearly white vale, leaving nothing but charred wood coated in miniscule crystals, each glinting with the vivid sunlight that gazed down from above. In minuets she had extinguished a blaze that would have taken the villagers the better part of an hour just to bring under control, let alone douse.
"Okay," She said firmly, looking around at the stunned inhabitance, "Anyone here speak terrain? Borian? Ferlininan? Esq garene boer Donche?"
Toby finished helping an elderly woman to a makeshift chair and looked over at his brother, "Rico, what do they speak." He furrowed his brow watching the man stand there transfixed on the speeder crash.
"RICO! Care to help some? Kyzarie to RICKY!" The rabbit yelped out. The human in Rico's arms wrinkled his nose and poke his head up, "Shut up! He's THINKING, stupid." Toby sneered and bolted toward them, "You bratty little hairless monkey I outta..."
"They speak Terran." Rico muttered sidestepping the charging hare. "Keedis, stop being rude or you can carry yourself." Tobias snorted, "Yeah, lookout kid or you might not get spoiled for a few minutes." Rico seemed to ignore him, his trance on the crash was broken but he still looked very distant, almost scared to look back that direction.
"Nicole, just speak to them as you would humans. The language is the same." Rico stated shakily. Tobias grunted, "Don't ask, Nick, Rico has a nack for these things. Man what a damn mess, what are we gonna do?"
Nicky nodded, turning back to the small crowd.
"Okay, listen closely. There's no way we'll be able to bring these fires under control with just water. This is a 'Condensing Extinguisher', it's fast, efficient and light, but given your stature you won't be able to handle one single handed, so you're going to have to split into small two man teams.
You and you, Grab that other I dragged out. There are more extinguishers on a rack inside the ship so the rest of you go though that hole in the bow and get them. Work two or three to a canister and don not shoot them directly at anyone unless you want to freeze their airway."
Several of the group including the first two nodded vaguely and pealed off to carry out Nicky's orders, but the rest stayed put. The woman flinched slightly and glared at the remaining villagers, her voice taking on a stern commanding tone that made everyone feel like she was addressing them individually. "DO you WANT this place to burn to the ground or something? Get a move on already. Melanie," She called to the medic, already moving away from the wreckage of the hut toward the next largest fire on the opposite side of the crater "see if you can help the wounded and get them away from the wreckage. Last thing we want is more collateral damage."
Tobias had moved further out of the village to assess the damage done by the rampaging speeder. His first glance caught what looked like a fox cub on top of an adult, probably caught while jumping from the speeder. The two were in the heap off to one side.
The rabbit stuck out like a sore thumb, being a full grown Kydane netted his height at a good two meters, twice some of the mobians. He was still having trouble telling the children from the adults short of them being side by side. However Fexus was carrying the small girl, marking him clearly as an adult. Tobias jogged his direction yelping out, "Hold up a sec, we need to get this organized or something. There's no point to running around aimlessly."
"crap... i knew i should have pulled the ignition circut in that thing." Fexus thought to himself. He turned around after hearing the noise of his speeder, only to catch the 2 tailed fox and the clueless rider dissapear into the woods. That unbelievably was the last of his worries, as being a mobian allowed him to blend in easily. He was more worried about the bots that were litterally walking around right behind the mobians backs. A relay from one of the bots concluded that the ship is at 90% instability and could blow at any minute. "Oh no... everyone needs to scramble!" He ran with the young cat in his arms and saw the victims of the crash standing in a group. Running up to rico, nicole and the rest of them, he didnt even give and intro, all he said was "No time! the ship is at 90% instability and rising! We need to get everyone away from the ship as far as we can!"
The rabbit slapped his head watching the mobian trot off, he let out a frustrated grunt and followed Fexus.
Rico didn't answer, from the look the alien's face he'd zoned out again. However the human still riding in his arms wasn't as stoic, blurting out, "It's 85.7%, GOD you're stupid."
IC:
Melanie had only been beginning to try and help the wounded when to her frustration she heard that now the ship was going to explode.
Great, what next? Forest fire? Plague?
"Okay, you heard them," she addressed a small group who were the main force tending the wounded, "We have to move these people out of here, use any stretchers for the seriously hurt, but otherwise you're going to have to carry them, two people per patient, spread the word to others." They hesitated briefly, but then began to comply.
Melanie sighed and hoped they'd have enough time, she cautioned them to move them carefully even if they were running out of time. Gently she lifted a child (she couldn't trust herself to carry anything heavier with her injured leg) and began to haltingly move away from the dangerous vessel.
I hope those people Nick sent in there for fire extinguishers get out in time.
They did what they could.
For the first few moments total confutation had set upon the survivors, nobody truly sure what was happening or what the shouting was about. Some were even still unawares of the immanent danger having been out of shouting distance or too distracted. Nicky scarcely called back the group she'd sent to fetch extinguishers before a low bubbling rumble rocked the husk of the ship.
The moment the cry went up people scattered. They ran, scrambled away from the still burning crater, others dragging the still untreated injured and walking wounded over the ridge. Nicky turned to look back, surveying the panic as a plasma vent near the starboard nacelle surpassed to the strain and erupted a boiling cloud of green flames tens of feet into the air. It was only by her chance grimace at this sight that her eyes caught a hint of fur laying on the ground a few meters from the lip of the crater where she stood. Ordinarily she wouldn't have gone back for them, but they were small and unlikely to slow her, and the proximity left her with no excuse. Two strides later the raccoon skidded to the side of the two unconscious bodies, grabbing both by the scruff and setting of at a belting pace as she slung the unfortunate driver over her shouldered, carrying the foxling under her other arm.
She kept running, screaming at the few stragglers that thought they had reached safety as she passed at a sprint.
The light found her first, a brilliantly white aura streaming through the tree line, reflecting off of every polished surface scattered among the huts. Then the shock wave caught up, ripping the two passengers from her grasp and slamming her into the dirt hard.
A dizzy, uncoordinated world presided over Nicole's senses, hearing and sight whistling with white noise, her head throbbing like it had gained a pulse of its own.
As the fog cleared, the limp body of the fox-kin came into focus sprawled out beside her, unmoving, but unproven in death.
Everything hurt. The raw wounds from the crash were open again and she could feel the warm blood trickling though her belly fur as she slowly pushed herself to her feet.
Still unsteady, but solidly determined not to stay down for long, Nicky surveyed the carnage, quickly spotting most of the other crewmates scattered around close by. The crater some distance behind was now completely engulfed by an enormous fire, though the walls of the impact site seemed to have it contained for the most part. Nothing seemed to be going their way at the moment.
Sighting the medic close by, the coon staggered over and placed a hand on Melanie's sholdure, wheezing slightly as she gathered her breath.
"You okay?"
Rico slowly began walking through the freshly rattled area. That secondary explosion may have only been a prelude to the destruction of this village, but the alien didn't seem to be that concerned with it. Instead he muttered to the human he was still hold, "If you knew it was going to explode then why didn't you say something."
The human child gave him a mocking sneer, "Cuz you didn't ASK! DOY!" Rico's response as he rolled his eyes seemed more rhetorical than anything, "Where did you learn how to be such a damn smartass anyway, old man." The boy's smirk widened, "From my DADDY!" That response made the alien fox grunt, almost like a gag reflex, making him pause in his slow saunter over to the two piles of fur and flesh Nicole had left.
He stopped short, feeling his stomach turn and his teeth grit. His counterpart had quite the opposite reaction to one of the two unconscious figures. The larger of two was easily seen now. He had a very definite hybrid appearance, his ears looked more like those of a floppy eared canine, his nose also looked very animal-like. But the rest of him looked human. No fur, his skin was rather tan, his legs, arms, face all looked child-like. But he didn't look like he had come from the ship, and the small human's reaction was a very strange one indeed.
The boy that had been called Sparky bounced out of Rico's arms as if he'd never really been hurt and trotted over yelling something to Rico that would single handedly confuse anyone watching, "Brother! LOOK DAD! IT'S MY BROTHER!"
Rico visibly winced, he looked aroudn hoping the chaos would afford noone hearing the boy's outcry.
There was an irritating ringing in her ears and the forest air now held the distinct smell of burnt matter. Melanie shook herself and looked down at the small being she'd been carrying, he seemed alright; having been carried far enough away from the blast,
"Atleast that went to plan," she muttered to herself.
She tried to stand so she could survey the damage and check on the other wounded, but a stabbing pain tore through her leg and she fell back to the ground gasping.
A light touch on her shoulder caught her attention and she turned to see Nicky, "You okay?"
"Pretty much, but it's about time I did something about my leg." Then her eyes focused on her comrades re-opened and bleeding wounds, she then casted around for med kit, "But first I think we'll take care of your injuries, can you spare a few moments?"
Mute had only taken a few desperate leaps from the ship when it detonated, he was thrown forwards with a powerful shockwave, and had crashed head long into the relative safety of the forest, he and his charge would have been dead if he hadn't been a mutant.
"Wh-what happened?" the little snow leopard asked dazedly, struggling to breathe under the full weight of her rescuer, Mute obliged by rolling over, and releasing his tight grip.
She wriggled out and stood up, lookign around with interest, "What happened?" She pointed in the direction of what was left of the village.
"An explosion." Mute got up as well and looked back, very glad for once that he was different, if he'd been anyone else surely they would have been fried.
Suddenly the child spotted something and cried out, "Hey, it's Rico and Sparky!" She began to run, clumsily in her state, but still at a fast pace, calling out. Mute hurried after her, but far more cautiously, he just hoped they'd get the idea that he was a friend.
Nicky grimaced slightly as she batted away the medics attempts at examining the damage, clearly still resisting the pain. She pulled her thick maintenance coat back over the bloody hole in her side.
"I'll be fine for now. We need to regroup first."
From this action alone, Mel knew the wound was bad. True she hadn't managed to get a good look due to the charred remains of the mechanics shirt, but she knew from experience that Nicky had something of a phobia to showing weakness during battle, and the length the merc' was going to in order to hide her injeries were testament to its depth.
"Lets head over to Toby and try get everyone together, before the natives start getting their wits back."
A distant, eerily child like voice echoed through his mind as the he faded in and out of consciousness. There had been a brief period of movement, the ground rushing up to greet him once again and plunging his sight back into darkness that was only now beginning to clear once again. The smell of ozone hit his nostrils hard, agitating his already throbbing head as his eyes opened to the sight of a short overlander stepping over him to reach the fallen hybrid that he'd tackled off the bike. It was clear they were no longer in the crater, trees blocking most of the daylight from above and the stone beneath him that of one of the many paths that snaked though the village. Still dazed, the cub lay motionless, giving his wits time to recover and asses the scene before him.
Gradualy, he started to slowly creep away, hopeing the invader wouldn't see him.
His paw grabbed something that wasn't grass or dirt. It was soft yet solid. Tails slowly moved his head and forced his eyes to focus. The pale pinkish skin of what they called overlanders was there under his own hand. It was a small hand though, and as soon as his courage wavered beyond nothing he pulled his head upward slightly. The cub's eyes leveled on blue-green eyes and more pinkish hairless skin. The eyes stared at him over square rimmed glasses, they weren't staring at him with any odd agenda. In fact there wasn't much emotion in them at all. "Hey, daddy? I think this guy's hurt too."
