I've always felt that Sonic the Comic should have some proper collected editions, paperback collections of the comics for sale in book stores. An increasingly popular hobby amongst retro comic fans is to have their old comics bound together into a hardcover format, some choose to have the entire comics bound whilst others only want select bits and pieces and rearranged (sometimes when back-up stories come into play, other times to have everything in chronological order as with DC Comics' Generations).
So hypothetically, if the complete Sonic the Hedgehog (including all characters in his universe, such as Tails and Captain Plunder, and not Shinobi or Megadroid) from Sonic the Comic (and all spinoffs such as Summer Specials, Poster Mags etc) was bound together into book format, what would it look like?
I think it's best to try to fit backup stories, such as Tails and Knuckles, inbetween the main Sonic features within as good a chronological order as possible (but without splitting the stories up).
This is just for fun, and reference should anyone want to actually go ahead and do this.
So, taking one step at a time, how would we do book 1? I think that Knuckles should be the first cutoff point - no Knuckles until book 2.

Now this is where it gets tricky and the backup stories start. STC #16-17 contain a two part Tails story and STC #18-21 contain a four part Tails story.
Does anyone know when these Tails stories take place? Is any time period mentioned within the comic? How much time takes place between the first Tails story and the second? Does Tails appear in any of the Sonic stories from STC #16-20?
Also, how many spinoff titles did STC have and what did each one contain? Please be in depth as possible (including page counts and special features such as pin-ups), even on non-Sinic material.
Please correct me if I have made or do make any errors, I don't have all of the issues available for reference.
I always thought about this as well but only really thought that the major important sagas would be better rather then some of the filler rubbish that was in the comic, and as such thought more like the S3&K adaption and Mettalix storylines would be better.
But nonetheless, if this did rock it would be great. 
I don't know about the Tails stories though, unfortunately.

It never mentions when they take place, so you could fit them in anywhere really. We do know Sonic mentions Tails is missing in #29, where Tails' story The Morbidden Hunt is taking plase.

The vast bulk of other strips were 5 pages, with some of the early ones (like the first DeCap story) being 4. There were 10 Mobius-set spin-off strips in total with 14 strips based on other games.

However, I'm thinking collecting every strip is counter-productive- there's a lot of bad strips that nobody wants to see reprinted, and it would take up space for the bigger-name strips that should be reprinted. Hence, if I was doing it, I'd skip quite a few of the strips, especially the earlier ones. It'd look more like this:

I'd agree, especially post-STC #100, but since we're being purely hypothetical here, how about we see how they'd all fit together first and then post our own personal selections later.

The Poster Mag and Specials stories all ran for 6 pages each, except for in the first Summer Special when (except for Doctor Sun) they were 4 pages. The two-parters in the Summer Special where all 6-pages each.
Not sure if this is the same for the Eternal Champions one.
Funny, I've been recently thinking about this exact same topic.
At first I had the same idea of arranging them by character. But thinking about it, I'm not sure I wouldn't want them together as complete issues. There was always something about reading it as an anthology comic that got me more excited. (Variety, I suppose.)
Besides, that would save the need for having #100 done four times (for example).
I have a collectors editioncomic, it has the FIRST 4 sonic comics in, and advertises the second which has the next 4.

It's got a cover picture of Sonic swimming from those aquatic robots from Sonic 2 which was later used as a cover around issue 20 ish????
As usual they skimp on the ammount of content IN the special edition, it's only marginally thicker than a normal comic, but binded together properly with a plastic cover, and ONLY 4 strips.
