It's like this...In the British Sonic comics, Knuckles was an ancient Aztec-type Echidna warrior whose people were being attacked by the Drakon Empire. Knuckles one day wakes up mysteriously transplanted thousands of years into his future only to discover that his race was gone and the island was a bloody mess. The US version of events tells us that Knuckles was trained to be the Floating Island's Guardian by his Dad, Locke.

Yeah. I guess the revealing of Knuckles' past was always going to open up so many plotlines that one thing lead to another and, in the end, things were bound to get a bit confusing.
