I tried leaving the Gamecube overnight but nothing happened.
The only thing leaving the system on overnight accomplishes is causing the chao (only those in the garden you left your character in) to age. While this may speed up going through reincarnation, leaving the chao unattended so long can cause them to become unhappy and die.
