The Forbidden Zone is a dangerous part of Robotropolis that is home to the evil wizard Lazar who has been sleeping there for hundreds of years. Thanks to the Guardian, no one has dared traverse that part of Robotropolis…
Until now.
We will now explore this mysterious land in episode six of SatAM: Super Sonic. The episode was aired on Oct. 16, 1993, and was directed by Jules Dennis.
The episode begins with Sally, Bunnie, and Rotor working on their new waterwheel. As they are working, however, Sally realizes Nicole, her trusty computer, is malfunctioning. To fix it, Sonic and Sally sneak into one of Dr. Robotnik’s factories to get a replacement of a microchip for Nicole. As Sonic distracts the guards, Sally enters the factory and obtains the microchip but is seen. While Sonic tries to get rid of the robots that are chasing him, Sally runs away from the factory and finds herself in the Forbidden Zone.
As Swatbots chase the princess, a skull-faced man in a cloak appears and destroys the Swatbots and leaves. Dr. Robotnik, who has no idea who the man was, demands research on him and the Forbidden Zone.
Back in Knothole, Sally talks about what happened with Sonic and the others and explains that the cloaked man is known as the Guardian. The Guardian has been watching over the resting place of the evil wizard Lazaar. Lazaar is in possession of a computer that holds many spells that many have been searching for but failed. Sonic decides to investigate and find the computer of spells to help the Freedom Fighters. Sally warns him that he might awaken Lazaar but Sonic ignores her and leaves.
After doing research, Snively tells Robotnik that the evil wizard is waiting for someone evil to awaken him. This catches the evil lord’s curiosity and he heads to the Forbidden Zone. He meets the Guardian and asks for the location of Lazaar. The Guardian tells Robotnik the location in hopes of awakening his former master but warns him to not bring anyone with him because only he will survive thanks to his “metallic heart.” Robotnik tests this out by sending a few of his Swatbots to Lazaar’s lair which leads each of them to their doom by either being grabbed by claws from poisonous ponds or the entrance crushing them. Robotnik then enters the lair passing by his destroyed Swatbots to see what awaits him.
Sonic reaches the lair as well and quickly passes by the claws and crushing entrance and finds himself having to decide between three paths. The first one will slice Sonic. The second one will burn him. While the third one will crush him with claws. As Sonic decides, he is interrupted by the Guardian who shoots lasers from his eyes at the hedgehog. He spindashes at the Guardian and quickly makes his escape by making his own path in the ground.
We then see Robotnik finally reach Lazaar’s resting place with the computer right next to the sleeping wizard. How he got through the three paths of danger is still a mystery though. The doctor just takes the computer and leaves.
Meanwhile, Bunnie, Rotor, and Sally are working on their waterwheel but the princess is worried that Sonic will awaken the evil wizard.
So that’s exactly what happened.
Sonic reaches the resting place of Lazaar but something is missing, Lazaar isn’t there. As Sonic snoops around, the evil wizard finds him and assumes that he is there to steal his computer and traps him in a forcefield.
Robotnik returns to his base of operations and checks the index of the computer and finds teleportation spells. He first tries to do Sonic but is told that the is out of range so he teleports Princess Sally to his lair. Sally appears confused as to how she got to Robotnik but is immediately captured by his Swatbots. He also teleports Bunnie Rabbot to his lair and captures her as well.
Lazaar senses the power of his computer of spells being used but assumes that Robotnik has his hands on it. He tells Sonic that he has slept for so long and dreamt about all the evil he has done and is filled with regret. The hedgehog promises to bring the computer back to Lazaar once he releases him from his forcefield. The wizard removes the forcefield but in order to make sure that Sonic brings it back once he obtains it, he removes his speed. Once Sonic brings his computer back, his speed will be restored.
Robotnik then tries out the submission spell on Bunnie and Sally which causes them to be his mindless slaves. As Sonic tries to find the location of the computer, he is teleported right to it with the hypnotized Sally and Bunnie right next to him. The two ladies then capture him and attempt to take him to the roboticizer. Sonic breaks free and grabs the computer. He breaks the spell on Sally and Bunnie using the device and they run back to the Forbidden Zone.
Lazaar is grateful to have his device back and gives Sonic his speed back. The hedgehog offers him a place in the Freedom Fighters but he declines saying that someone has to guard the computer of spells. Sally suggests destroying the device but the wizard tells her that it would release all the evil inside it. After they say their farewells, Lazaar and the Guardian enter the wizard’s lair and it shrinks until it cannot be seen.
They are then teleported back to the waterwheel which Rotor has now completed. Thanks to it, they now can create power for lightbulbs. Sonic and the others are impressed and thus concludes episode six of SatAM.
